"Zhang Yan, it's your mother! I'm here to take you home, so hurry up and open the door!"
"Dammit, you ungrateful wretch! I've treated you well, and yet you dare to run away! Lu, open the door right now!"
Various curses and insults echoed outside, and as Lu Zheng entered the room, he saw Wen Qian just sitting up.
"The Zhang family is here?"
Lu Zheng nodded and took out some clothes from the cupboard, handing them to her. "Yes, quite a few of them have come."
Wen Qian felt a bit relieved that they hadn't let Uncle Aiguo tear down the yard next door; otherwise, they would have missed a good opportunity. She also couldn't bear to see Zhang Yan's state from last night.
Inside the room, Zhang Yan had already woken up at the sound of the men outside. Terrified, she curled up in the corner of the bed against the wall.
Even if Lu Yao and Lu San were deaf, they would have been awakened by the ruckus outside; the voices were loud enough to be heard throughout the village.
"Lu, don’t think you can hide her! Zhang Yan is my wife now; do you want to die?"
Lu Yao looked nervously at Lu Zheng and said anxiously, "Dad, what should we do? They've already come looking for her."
He glanced at Zhang Yan, who was still in distress. Lu Zheng closed his eyes and leaned against the wall, struggling to breathe.
Zhang Yan was still in a precarious situation; everyone in the village knew about Lu Yao's predicament now. He could forget about marrying anyone in the future.
Lu was calculating in his mind. Now that Zhang Yan was being forced into a corner, their family was her only option for help. No matter what they did, she would surely comply.
Lu's eyes darted around as he formed a plan in his mind. The Lu family could not be cut off.
Ding Cuiying watched as Zhang Yan huddled in the corner, listening to the chaos outside with fear gnawing at her teeth. She couldn't understand why her husband insisted on keeping this woman around. They should just hand her over and send those people away.
Zhang Yan was definitely not clean anymore; what use did they have for her?
Lu looked at Lu Yao. "Let's go out and take a look."
Though Ding Cuiying was scared, she had no choice but to support Lu Zheng.
Once they got him seated on a stool in the yard, Lu Yao trembled as he approached the door to open it.
As soon as the door was opened, it was pushed wide from the outside. Lu Yao hurriedly ran away, but he should have been knocked to the ground by now.
A group of people walked in from outside.
Leading the group was Chen Qiang, the man Zhang Yan had married. He looked to be about the same age as Lu, but he was more robust and intimidating in appearance. Behind him were several men who didn’t seem to be from the Zhang family; they were likely brought by Chen Qiang. Following them were Zhang's mother and two daughters-in-law.
Wen Qian watched them, initially hoping to see the clever third daughter-in-law of the Zhang family. Despite having visited numerous times, this third daughter-in-law had never made an appearance, suggesting that she had already gained control over the Zhang family.
As Chen Qiang entered, he spotted Lu Yao and walked over. His face was covered in excess flesh and scars, and his tall stature made Lu Yao feel frightened and anxious.
“Lu, hand over Zhang Yan! If not, I’ll tear your family apart!”
Lu Yao was terrified and hid behind Lu, not daring to speak.
Zhang's mother observed the scene before her and approached with a smile. “Lu Yao, Zhang Yan is no longer your wife. Hurry up and hand her over; it’s better for everyone involved. Don’t you think?”
She then turned to Ding Cuiying. “Cuiying, look at them; we can’t afford to provoke them. You all should quickly hand her over.”
Zhang's mother felt her heart racing as she glanced at Chen Qiang behind her. Earlier that morning, Chen Qiang had come knocking on their door, claiming that Zhang Yan had run away. Instantly, she thought of the Lu family. Without the Lu family, Zhang Yan had nowhere else to go.
She genuinely feared this son-in-law; he was notorious for being violent and was known for paying the most money.
Ding Cuiying blinked in fear, not daring to speak as she shook her head vigorously, her legs trembling uncontrollably.
Lu stared coldly at Chen Qiang and said, “Sit down; let’s talk this through.”
“Who the hell wants to talk nicely with you? Where is Zhang Yan? Get her out here quickly; I’m starving at home!”
Chen Qiang waved his hand angrily and tried to barge in directly.
“Breaking into a private residence is against the law! I can report you to the police!”
His movement halted after Lu’s voice rang out. He arrogantly stepped closer to Lu, grabbing his collar and lightly slapping his face with his hand.
“Are you trying to scare me? Who do you think you are? I’m taking my own wife; what does it have to do with you? I could report you for kidnapping!”
Chen Qiang had survived in this world for many years; he wasn’t someone who could be easily intimidated or scared off.
Lu Yao, though frightened, still managed to shout with a trembling voice, his eyes fixed on Chen Qiang. "Let go of my father, hurry up and release him!"
Lu took a deep breath and sat down. "Let's talk this over. What do you want in order to let Zhang Yan go?"
"Ah, I want money. You give me money, enough to satisfy me, and then I might consider it," Chen Qiang said with a mocking grin as he pulled a chair over and sat directly across from Lu, the distance between them no more than ten steps.
Lu looked at him and asked, "What are your conditions?"
Chen Qiang rested his chin on his hand, pondering for a moment before smirking. "How much did you give the Zhang family?"
"Two hundred!" Zhang Qiang replied, his eyes darting around nervously, clearly feeling guilty. The Zhang family members behind him looked at him in disbelief; they had anticipated that Chen Qiang would ask for a large sum but never expected it to be this much. After all, Chen Qiang had only given the Zhang family eighty before!
Lu smiled at Chen Qiang. "Little brother, I'm getting old but not foolish. Two hundred? You could easily marry a daughter from a wealthy family for that amount; there's no need to pursue a divorced woman like Zhang Yan."
"Speak honestly, and we can negotiate; otherwise, there's nothing to discuss," Lu continued.
"How dare you threaten me? You old fool! If we want to take Zhang Yan today, what can you do about it?" Chen Qiang retorted angrily. He gestured to the two brothers behind him, who were ready to step into the inner room.
"Zhang Yan can't just marry anyone; she has already registered her marriage with my son," Lu's voice rang out, halting their steps. They turned back to look at Chen Qiang.
They knew about the marriage certificate; there had been quite a stir in their village recently regarding such matters, so they were somewhat informed.
Chen Qiang was taken aback as he glared at Zhang's mother. His anger flared as he stared her down while his fists clenched at his sides, itching to strike. "What did your family tell me?"
