The village chief let out a sigh of relief, his eyes smiling as he looked at Wen Qian. He then turned to Lu's father and Cuihua, urging them, "You two hurry up, don't say I didn't give you a chance."
"Village chief, we really have no money left. We've lost everything," they replied.
Wen Qian believed that they were indeed out of money, but she could not accept that they had lost everything else. If there wasn't something substantial to exchange, why would these two even come?
Wen Qian crouched down to look at Sister Wan, asking softly, "What did they give you in exchange?"
"Two gold bars," Sister Wan replied.
"How many gold bars do they have left?"
Sister Wan blinked at Wen Qian, who was staring intently at her. With a deep sigh, she answered, "One."
Wen Qian raised an eyebrow in surprise; she hadn't expected Lu's father to still have so many gold bars—seven in total.
She walked towards Lu's father, stopping less than a meter away from him. "I want that gold bar. Otherwise, this matter will have to be escalated to the county. You should know better than I what the consequences will be."
Lu's father gritted his teeth and stared wide-eyed at Wen Qian. How did she know? How did she know how many were left? Suddenly, he looked at Sister Wan; she must have told her.
Although most people were skeptical about ghost stories and there were plenty who tried to take advantage of the situation, Sister Wan did possess some real skills. Otherwise, she wouldn't be able to stay safe while others were being taken away for struggle sessions.
"Will you agree?"
Cuihua was about to push Wen Qian away in frustration, glaring at her. "We won't agree! Do whatever you want!"
Wasn't this asking for their lifeline? They had so few valuable things left; if they lost this too, how would they survive?
The village chief and Lu Zheng stood at the entrance of the courtyard while Wen Qian, Lu's father, and Cuihua were at the innermost part of the yard. Aside from Lu Zheng hearing their conversation, the village chief only caught Cuihua's refusal, which immediately displeased him.
"Old Lu's family, you made a foolish mistake and now you want to drag the whole village down with you? Do you think everyone can just stop living? Do you not want to stay in the village anymore?"
The village chief walked over, glaring fiercely at Cuihua with a dark expression on his face.
He truly regretted it, regretted allowing his family to settle in the village. Hadn't this just invited a whole family of trouble?
He glanced at Old Lu, "You tell me, if Wen Qian makes a demand, will you agree? If you agree, everyone can live peacefully and steadily. If you don’t agree, I think you’ve really lost your mind!"
As the village chief continued his incessant chatter and attacks, Old Lu suddenly deflated. He slapped his thighs a few times and roared, "I agree, I agree!"
With a weary gaze, he looked at Wen Qian. "You go with your mother to get it!"
"Old man!"
Old Lu turned to the anxious Cuihua and said coldly, "Go get it!"
Under Old Lu's piercing gaze, she had no choice but to take Wen Qian into the house to retrieve it. Her steps were slow, clearly reluctant.
Suddenly, Old Lu began to cough violently. As the harsh sounds of his coughing filled the air, a woman’s hoarse laughter accompanied it.
Sister Wan's wrinkled face suddenly seemed to lose all vitality and began to wither. Tears filled her small eyes beneath drooping eyelids.
She had thought she could live out her days peacefully, but unexpectedly, obstacles had arisen along the way.
In the end, it was her own greed that led to this moment. If she hadn’t come here in the first place, none of this would have happened.
Inside the house, despite Cuihua's slow movements, the gold bars were eventually pulled out. Reluctantly, she handed them to Wen Qian.
Without hesitation, Wen Qian took them, counted them quickly, and stuffed them into her pocket before turning to leave.
She smiled at the village chief. "Thank you for your trouble; I won’t pursue this matter any further. Let’s consider it settled."
"That’s fine then. You can consider yourselves separated; after all, you’re still family. You should think about it more," the village chief said before hastily leaving without a moment's hesitation.
In the courtyard, Wen Qian and Lu Zheng didn’t want to look at them anymore. Just as they turned to head back inside, Sister Wan called out to her.
"Come here; I have something to tell you."
Wen Qian hesitated but eventually approached her. The old woman gestured for her to squat down and look at her.
In just that brief moment, Wen Qian suddenly realized that this woman seemed to have changed significantly.
In the dim light, Wen Qian stared at the woman’s mouth as she slowly repeated in her mind: "The returning soul."
Wen Qian's pupils constricted in disbelief as she looked at her. Her fists clenched tightly and every muscle in her body tensed up.
How did she know?
Wan Jie looked at Wen Qian's expression and smiled. "You don't need to be afraid. I just have something else to give you."
With that, she took out two gold bars from her bosom, the same two that Lu's father had given her in the afternoon. If she dared to keep these, it meant she was seeking ruin for her family.
Wen Qian accepted them, feeling puzzled as she looked at Wan Jie, unable to comprehend her actions. But seeing the woman smile, she felt a strange sense of calm.
"It's fine, I'll be on my way," she said, standing up and heading towards the thatched cottage. Wen Qian thought this woman was indeed extraordinary. Standing before her felt as if she were completely exposed, as if Wan Jie could see through her innermost thoughts.
The fact that Wan Jie knew she had been reborn was unexpected. She never imagined there could be such strange occurrences in this world. It seemed she would have to be more cautious in the future; if others discovered her secret, it would spell her doom.
Wan Jie's son hurriedly left with her, while Lu's father sat dejectedly in the courtyard. Cuihua squatted down on the ground, crying and wiping her tears.
"Old man, what are we going to do now? What about our son?"
They had moved here from another place and were unfamiliar with their surroundings, having no relatives nearby. Now that they had lost everything, how could they survive?
Lu's father kept calculating in his mind what to do next. Listening to Cuihua's complaints disrupted his thoughts, and in frustration, he kicked at her.
"Shut up and go inside."
By this time, the sky had turned dark, ominous like a beast ready to devour.
Inside the thatched cottage, Wen Qian placed the gold bars on the bed and quietly stared at the jade in her palm. She couldn't understand why that woman claimed it was hers. What did that statement mean?
And what was Lu's father's true identity? How could he possess so many gold bars and a considerable amount of savings?
Outside, the night was pitch black when a shooting star streaked across the sky. Wen Qian gazed out through the window, unconsciously reaching for the jade around her neck.
This Wan Jie could see through her rebirth; it reminded her of something from her past life.
