In truth, it wasn't entirely his fault for being reckless this time; he had simply been too ostentatious. After all, the days leading up to this moment had been stifling for him, and now that he had finally gained some power and his pockets were filled with money, he couldn't help but want to flaunt it for everyone to see.
His mind was often sharp but sometimes dull, and part of the reason he had managed to get this far was due to the support of Lu's father and Ding Cuiying, but another significant factor was Zhang Yan, his capable assistant. The fact that Zhang Yan had grown up in such an environment and married Lu Yao showed she was no ordinary person. In his previous life, it could be said that Zhang Yan had been the one to help him with all the ideas.
Calculating the time, Zhang Yan would soon be back, and the real drama was about to unfold.
Lu Yao swaggered ahead, chin held high, completely shedding the pitiful demeanor he had displayed that morning. As he entered a narrow alley and turned a corner, he suddenly noticed someone staring at him from ahead. Panic surged within him as he tried to turn and run, only to find someone blocking his way from behind.
He swallowed nervously, instinctively placing his hand on his pocket. "What do you want?" he stammered.
"Cut the nonsense; hand over the money quickly," one of them demanded.
"What money? I don’t understand! I have no money!" Lu Yao trembled as he slowly backed away, anxiously watching the two men approach him, veins bulging on his forehead.
"Are you trying to fool me? I've been following you all this way. You just withdrew cash from the post office—hand it over!" The man sneered, raising his hand to lightly pat Lu Yao's face before spitting on him.
"I—I didn’t withdraw any money! You must have mistaken me for someone else!" Lu Yao protested desperately.
"You smell like you've been feasting well. Did you enjoy your meal at the state-run restaurant? That was my kindness allowing you a hearty meal," the man retorted.
Clearly uninterested in further conversation, the man exchanged a glance with his accomplice, and they both lunged at Lu Yao's clothes. Their excitement grew as they saw Lu Yao clutching his pocket tightly.
Before long, they pried Lu Yao's hand open and pulled out the cash from his pocket. Their faces flushed with exhilaration as they counted the money.
"Boss, we hit the jackpot!" one of them exclaimed eagerly.
"Look at all this cash!" The man grinned as he counted the bills in his hands.
Lu Yao watched them in fear as an idea flickered in his mind: Call the police! Yes, go find a cop!
Just as he made a move to escape, the man caught on and signaled to his accomplice, who promptly knocked Lu Yao unconscious with a swift blow.
With their threat neutralized, the two brothers began counting their spoils with excitement.
There are quite a few big brothers around, and if we pull this off, we can rest for a long time.
The man smiled wickedly and said, "Come on, big brother will treat you to drinks and meat."
The two brothers were feeling proud when they suddenly found themselves blocked by someone familiar.
"Er Huzi, if you leave the money behind obediently, we'll let you two brothers pass. But don’t blame us for being rude."
Er Huzi protected his younger brother behind him. Seeing the man blocking their way, he sighed inwardly at the bad situation but maintained a defiant expression.
"Huang Lianzi, stop boasting. Don’t push your luck too far."
During this time, Huang Lianzi and his brothers had been robbing on their turf, causing Er Huzi and his brother to lose face in front of their peers.
Now that the money was so substantial, there was no way they would just hand it over unless they were dead—over his dead body.
"Er Huzi, you’re asking for trouble."
Neither side wanted to waste more words; everything that needed to be said had already been said. With neither side willing to back down, it could only be settled with fists.
Er Huzi and his younger brother were skilled fighters, but with Huang Lianzi's numbers overwhelming them, they ultimately found themselves at a disadvantage.
As they watched the money almost slip away, Er Huzi disregarded any last shred of loyalty and kicked straight at Huang Lianzi's groin.
The kick landed perfectly, and he barely managed to reclaim the money.
Huang Lianzi's brothers were furious to see their leader attacked. Huang Lianzi's face turned beet red; he could barely stand and shouted hoarsely, "Take him out!"
As Huang Lianzi's side became increasingly aggressive, Er Huzi and his brother found themselves pinned to the ground, unable to move. Just as it seemed the money would be taken from them, a group of police officers suddenly appeared around them, surrounding the scene.
"Let go! Everyone get down with your hands on your heads!"
Huang Lianzi's brothers wanted to run but found themselves completely surrounded by the police with no chance of escape. They could only helplessly give up.
The police took them all away and noticed Lu Yao passed out nearby during the cleanup. After questioning Er Huzi, they learned he was a victim as well and took him along.
Inside the police station, everyone recognized Lu Yao; they knew he was the one whose two children had been kidnapped a few days ago.
Seeing that his money had been stolen again made them feel sorry for him.
The police expressed their gratitude to Lu Zheng and Wen Qian, saying, "We owe you thanks this time. We’ve wanted to catch them for a long time but couldn’t find an opportunity. If it weren’t for you two, they would have definitely gotten away again."
"This is what we should do."
"May I ask how you found out?"
Wen Qian smiled at the hesitant and doubtful police officers. "We noticed something was off while we were having dinner. They followed him closely when we went to eat."
"We really appreciate your help," Lu Zheng and Wen Qian said, declining the police's gratitude as they took Lu Chen and left.
The police watched Lu Zheng and the others fade into the distance, feeling a strange familiarity, though they couldn't quite place it.
Inside the police station, Lu Yao woke up to find out he had been rescued and that all his money had been returned. Overwhelmed with gratitude, he hugged the officer and cried, "Ah! I thought I was going to die! They wanted my life!"
When faced with the police's questioning, he exaggeratedly recounted how they had robbed him, threatened him, and beaten him, even claiming they wanted to kill his entire family. He shared every detail he could remember.
Upon learning that someone had reported his situation to the police, he quickly asked, "Do you know who it was?"
They didn't know; the informants had left without giving their names.
Frustrated by their inability to provide answers, Lu Yao left, still feeling a lingering doubt in his heart. This time, he didn't dare act proud; he reverted to a more submissive demeanor, walking with his head down and a cautious air about him.
People on the street eyed him suspiciously, assuming he was a thief and subtly distancing themselves from him.
Lu Yao thought this time he could settle down, but how could dawn break after a storm without an even greater conspiracy lurking? Could he really take this money home? A normal person would know to be cautious after such an experience.
But Lu Yao was not a normal person.
As he walked near the supply and marketing cooperative, he couldn't help but bite his lip. He hadn't even had a drink yet! It had been so long since he last drank; he desperately wanted to indulge. But thinking about the money he had just regained left him torn between choices.
To drink or not to drink?
He stood hesitantly at the entrance of the cooperative. Finally, with a sudden determination, he closed his eyes tightly and gritted his teeth before stepping inside.
Just one bottle. He promised himself it would only be one bottle—he wouldn't drink more than that. And he would definitely find a safe place to enjoy it without anyone noticing.
This time, he generously bought a bottle of liquor and tucked it into his coat as he walked away.
He didn’t take the village cart; instead, he aimed to find a secluded spot where he could drink slowly and savor every drop.
As he ambled along, Lu Zheng and Wen Qian appeared behind him, their figures emerging in the distance.
