The Lu family had migrated from another place and, at that time, they were isolated by the villagers. They knew they had to find a daughter from a prominent family to seek protection.
Zhang Yan was the daughter-in-law chosen after much deliberation by Lu Qian. The Zhang family was a prominent clan in Zhangjia Village, with relatives occupying three-quarters of the village.
The Zhang family was attracted to the new house of the Lu family and the fact that Lu Yao had an officer brother. Meanwhile, the Lu family valued the large number of people in the Zhang family.
As for Wen Qian, Lu initially opposed her marrying Lu Yao but believed that marrying Lu Zheng was a viable option. Wen Qian had grown up in the village; although her parents had passed away, she still had several relatives in the area. However, without familial ties through marriage, those connections gradually faded.
Lu had three reasons for agreeing to Lu Zheng marrying her. First, Wen Qian's mother had died saving the village's property, so the villagers owed her two lives and would certainly provide assistance in other matters. This meant that life for the Lu family in the village would be much easier.
Second, after Wen Qian's mother's death, both the village and town provided compensation, which was a substantial amount of money that the Lu family would not want to let go of easily.
Third, Wen Qian had a gentle nature; perhaps she could indirectly influence Lu Zheng, ensuring that their future lives would be worry-free.
However, Lu Qian overlooked that although Wen Qian was soft-spoken, she was also quite stubborn. She would never let go of things easily and would rather die than speak out. In her previous life, if they hadn’t manipulated Lu Chen, they might have beaten Wen Qian to death without her revealing a word.
He also overlooked that as a mother, she held deep feelings for her child. This indeed gave Wen Qian an opportunity for revenge—something the Lu family could never have imagined.
Lu's voice was hoarse as he said, "Your life is given by me; you belong to me forever."
His two grandsons had grown up before his eyes; how could he not feel heartache?
"You go find someone to bring them back. Otherwise, you'll never know what you want to know about that matter."
Lu Zheng narrowed his eyes as he looked at Lu De Yi's smug expression, a smirk forming at the corner of his mouth.
"I don’t want to know anymore; I can find out on my own."
Lu's expression stiffened; he clearly hadn’t expected such a response from him.
He had always wanted to know about that matter since childhood and had often used it to manipulate him into doing many things he was unwilling to do.
Suddenly, a spark of inspiration flashed through Lu's mind.
He was no longer the same person he had been as a child.
From the moment Lu Zheng secretly enlisted in the army behind their backs, Lu had known that one day he would lose control over Lu Zheng and would no longer be able to rein him in. However, he never expected that day to arrive so suddenly.
The yard fell silent for a moment.
Then, a loud cry erupted.
Wen Qian turned towards the source of the sound and saw Lu Yao crawling towards Lu, his face streaked with tears. He clutched at Lu's pants, his voice hoarse and barely intelligible.
“Dad, Dad, call the police! Save Xiao He and Xiao Feng, Dad!”
Lu looked at Lu Yao with frustration and disappointment, lowering his voice as he sternly replied, “Do you think I don’t want to save them? Whether we can bring them back is one thing, but if you call the police, you’ll be taken in.”
Lu Yao’s expression froze for a moment before he hurriedly hugged Lu and cried out in despair.
“Dad, that’s our last hope for the Lu family! If they’re lost, our family will be cut off from future generations!”
Lu glared at him irritably. “What nonsense are you talking about? You and Zhang Yan can carry on. We can have another later.”
“Dad, I can’t! I can’t do it anymore!”
Lu suddenly stood up and grabbed Lu Yao by the collar, his eyes wide with disbelief. “What did you just say?”
Lu Yao collapsed onto the ground. “I can’t do it anymore. I just can’t.”
Ding Cuihua rushed over and pressed down on Lu Yao, shouting loudly, “How can you not? That’s impossible!”
“I was bitten by a snake in the field back then, and I couldn’t do it anymore. I just can’t.”
Lu sank down onto a bench, memories flooding back to him from two days prior.
That day, Lu Yao and Zhang Yan had decided to slack off and rest in the woods. As they lay there, they grew restless and began to seek thrills without a care in the world.
But who could have predicted that a venomous snake was coiled up nearby?
Disturbed from its rest, the snake became agitated. Unaware of their surroundings, Lu Yao and Zhang Yan continued their antics.
Suddenly, taking advantage of Lu Yao standing up, the snake struck, landing a deadly bite.
Lu Yao writhed on the ground in pain after being bitten by the snake. The serpent spat and then slithered away, hiding its prowess and reputation. Zhang Yan was so startled that she stood frozen until Lu Yao's cries broke the silence, prompting her to rush off in search of help from the villagers.
When the villagers arrived, they took in the chaotic scene and the strange smell surrounding the two of them, and they quickly understood what had happened. Their disdain was palpable as they noticed the spot where Lu Yao had been bitten. The older men instinctively crossed their legs, while the women laughed knowingly, exchanging glances with Zhang Yan that spoke volumes.
Zhang Yan was doomed to misfortune from that moment on.
The villagers transported Lu Yao to the county hospital, spending a considerable amount of money. He managed to survive, but he was left a shell of his former self. Only I and Zhang Yan knew the truth; everyone else remained oblivious.
Ding Cuihua overheard Zhang Yan boast shamelessly that Lu Yao had become even more formidable, leading her to believe everything was fine. She quietly mentioned it to Lu, but no one paid much attention to it.
Lu murmured to himself, "No wonder, no wonder." He had urged Lu Yao and Zhang Yan to have more children, but Lu Yao always looked pale and responded half-heartedly.
No wonder indeed! Ever since she had given birth to a child, Zhang Yan hadn’t conceived again. So that was how it was!
Lu's back, which had been straight, suddenly bent under the weight of his thoughts, making him appear at least ten years older. He thought of his two grandsons who had been abducted; they were the last hope of the Lu family!
His very lifeline.
Unable to bear it any longer, Lu felt a surge of heat rise within him. His face flushed crimson as he suddenly coughed up blood, collapsing backward.
By chance, the blood splattered onto Lu Yao's face as he knelt before him.
Lu Yao's eyes widened in terror. Ding Cuihua hurriedly supported Lu and shouted loudly, "Old man! Please don’t scare me! Don’t scare me!"
Lu Yao quickly pulled Lu back as he fell.
