The couple understood each other's intentions without needing to say a word. Zhang Yan's arms trembled involuntarily, and hope ignited in her eyes. They could not afford to lose these two children; otherwise, her life would be over.
The two of them conspired together, and Lu Yao shouted loudly to Ding Cuihua, "Mother, grab that wretched woman's foot!"
Ding Cuihua had just stumbled and fallen hard, landing awkwardly on the ground. Hearing Lu Yao's words, she quickly wrapped her arms around Wen Qian's legs, trying to prevent her from moving. She cursed under her breath, attempting to claw at Wen Qian's legs.
Wen Qian lifted her other foot, ready to kick Ding Cuihua in the face. Ding Cuihua hurriedly let go and shielded her face. When she opened her eyes again, she saw that Wen Qian had already moved aside.
Taking advantage of this moment, Lu Yao and Zhang Yan rushed towards the thatched cottage. As they pushed open the door, they saw a figure inside and their eyes widened in surprise and joy.
With a loud thud, the door swung wide open, revealing the person inside to everyone in the yard.
"Big Brother?" Lu Yao stood frozen in disbelief as he stared at the figure within.
Zhang Yan reacted quickly; she pushed past Lu Yao, who was blocking the doorway, and hurried inside. They searched everywhere—under the cabinets and beneath the bed—but there was no sign of the two children.
"Oldest Brother?"
Lu Zheng glared at them with a dark expression, his eyes filled with murderous intent as he looked at Lu Yao. He had expected Lu Yao to support him; after all, if it weren't for his interference, the two people getting married should have been them.
He never imagined that this entire family would treat her and her children this way.
Though a flicker of panic crossed Lu Zheng's face, he remained seated calmly on the stool. He then fixed his dark gaze on Lu Zheng and said sternly, "Oldest Brother, why didn't you come out when you returned? Were you waiting for me to invite you?"
Lu Zheng stepped out of the house but did not sit across from Lu Yao. Instead, he walked straight toward Wen Qian and Lu Chen, standing before them like an impenetrable wall protecting them.
Lu Yao watched Zhang Yan emerge from the house; their eyes met in mutual despair.
Suddenly, Lu Yao grabbed Zhang Yan's arm. "I'll go find them; they must still be around. I'll return their money and make them give our son back."
"Yes, yes! Didn't they say it would be the day after tomorrow? I'll go with you."
Lu Yao insisted as he pulled Zhang Yan along. "No! I’ll go alone; I can run fast. You stay here and keep watch."
As he spoke, his gaze swept toward Wen Qian and Lu Zheng.
Lu Yao dashed out of the yard while Zhang Yan sat on the stool, glaring fiercely at Wen Qian. She wiped away her tears and let out a cold laugh.
"Since Big Brother is back, why hide? Are you afraid we might bully your sister-in-law behind your back?"
It was clear to anyone with eyes whether there had been bullying or not. Since he had already seen everything earlier, Zhang Yan no longer bothered to pretend. In her opinion, Lu Zheng's sudden return might just be for a divorce. After being away for so long, his unexpected arrival surely meant something significant; perhaps there was a little enchantress waiting for him outside!
Moreover, just look at Wen Qian in her current state—her hair was as dry as a haystack, her face waxy and pale, and her figure was so gaunt that it made one lose their appetite. She couldn't believe that Lu Zheng would still want her like this.
Not long ago, Lu Yao had been secretly flirting with Wen Qian, but now he looked at her with disgust. Not to mention the foul odor that clung to her.
Lu shot a glare at Zhang Yan, who merely pouted and rolled her eyes in displeasure. With their son missing, she absolutely wouldn't allow this wretched woman and her illegitimate child to thrive.
Lu spoke up: "Since you're back, go help your brother find Xiao Wen and Xiao Feng."
"You've been in the army for so long; you must know someone in the city. Your nephew is missing—hurry up and look for him."
After saying this, he cast a sidelong glance at Zhang Yan, his eyes filled with calculation.
Zhang Yan quickly interjected, "Dad, we can't go! If we do, it'll be the end for me and Lu Yao!"
"Shut up! You don't want your son anymore? I still want my grandson!"
Ding Cuihua also turned to Lu Zheng, her voice sharp as she scolded him. "Are you deaf? Hurry up and go! If you can't find Xiao Wen and Xiao Feng, I'll beat you to death!"
Wen Qian coldly watched them lose their minds; this wasn't enough—far from it. They hadn't even tasted one-tenth of the suffering she had endured in her past life.
Lu Zheng looked at Lu with a cold expression. "I don't owe the Lu family anything."
"You ungrateful wretch! I raised you all these years and even sent you to the army. Now that you've become an official, you want to forget about us?"
Lu grabbed a nearby stool and hurled it at Lu Zheng, glaring with a dark and terrifying expression. "Dream on!"
Lu Zheng coldly regarded them. "You raised me; I support the family. I owe you nothing. Your life was given by me; you'll always owe me for it."
Lu was so furious he gasped for breath and coughed violently.
Wen Qian looked at the man standing before her—broad-shouldered and narrow-waisted, tall and upright. It was obvious to anyone that he didn't belong to the Lu family. There had always been rumors in the village that Lu Zheng wasn't Ding Cuihua's biological son but rather a child she had with someone else.
Could it really be true?
However, Ding Cuihua was not particularly attractive, while Lu Zheng was handsome, bearing no resemblance to her at all.
Lu Zheng turned around to take Lu Chen from Wen Qian's arms and noticed her hands, which were covered in scars and calluses, looking worse than his own. A flash of heartache crossed his eyes as the child in his arms fearfully burrowed closer to him.
Before long, Lu Yao rushed back in a panic, his steps unsteady and his eyes vacant.
"It's all gone, everything is gone."
Zhang Yan rushed over, shaking him. "Where's our son? Where is he? Didn't you say you could bring him back?"
"Everything is gone, no one is left, it's over."
"How could it be gone? How could this happen! They said we would have to wait until the day after tomorrow!"
Lu Yao suddenly collapsed onto the ground.
"It's over; the old Lu family will be left without descendants."
He looked at Zhang Yan. "We need to call the police! Let them help us find him."
But hesitation flickered in both of their eyes. They understood each other's unspoken thoughts.
Ding Cuihua was crying out in the yard.
"Oh my God, my grandson! You bastards who sell children, give me back my grandson!"
Soon, a crowd gathered outside the yard. The commotion from their house had drawn attention from others.
One woman remarked, "What's wrong with the old Lu family? They all look like they've seen ghosts."
Another squinted her eyes and asked in confusion, "Who knows? Hey, isn't that Lu Zheng standing over there? The eldest of the Lu family?"
"That's him! Why has he suddenly come back? Could it be true what people in the village are saying—that he wants to divorce and marry a girl from the city?"
"I don't think so; look, he's still holding little Chen!"
What were Lu Yao and Zhang Yan doing in such despair? And what was Ding Cuihua wailing about? It was hard to hear clearly.
An older man exclaimed in shock, "Did someone mention human traffickers? Are there traffickers in our village?"
"What? Traffickers!"
