"Ah, my bowl! You little devil, just wait until I beat you to a pulp!" 0

Wen Qian glared at Ding Cuiying, who was rushing towards her. Without a hint of mercy, she snatched the stick from Ding's hands and swung it at her. With all the hard work she did during the day, her strength was no joke; she had only been holding back for that old hag. 0

She struck Ding Cuiying several times, who wailed and dodged around the courtyard. Lu Yao and Zhang Yan saw the situation escalating and rushed forward to grab the stick, but Wen Qian seized the opportunity to swing at them too. 0

All three of them were caught in the chaos of blows. Meanwhile, Lu Wen and Lu Feng clung to Lu's legs, crying out loudly. The courtyard was in disarray, and Lu Chen stood off to the side, dumbfounded as he watched Wen Qian. 0

Lu Tie's face darkened as he shouted angrily, "Everyone, stop it!" 0

Wen Qian paused, walking over to Lu Chen to protect him. Breathing heavily through her nose, she felt exhilarated and almost wanted to go back for another round. 0

She had really gone all out; there would surely be marks all over their bodies. 0

"Big Brother's wife, what madness has possessed you? Look at what you've done to your mother! Hurry up and kneel down to apologize, then cook a meal. After eating, get back to work." 0

Wen Qian shot a cold smile at Lu. This man was the cruelest of them all—putting on a facade of kindness while harboring the darkest intentions inside. 0

"I won't! Today I’m going to get my money. From now on, I won’t be working anymore; my son and I can contribute enough money to the family in a month." 0

With that, Wen Qian hurled the stick at Ding Cuiying, hitting her squarely in the face. The spot immediately swelled up. 0

She pulled her son inside and noticed he looked frightened. Feeling both heartbroken and guilty, she hugged him tightly and said softly, "Mommy will take you into town; we'll eat meat." 0

After locking the door, she crawled to the innermost part of the bed and pulled back the curtain. She took out a box hidden beneath some bricks. 0

Seeing her son's confused and frail yellow face made her smile gently as she opened the box. 0

Inside was stuffed with money. Wen Qian let out a sigh of relief; thankfully, she had only been soft-hearted and didn’t want to quarrel with others. 0

However, when it came to Lu Zheng sending money home, she refused to relent—only five yuan a month for the family. 0

Fortunately, Lu Zheng had made a wise decision by informing the post office in advance that only she could collect the money; otherwise, it wouldn't be released. 0

Ding Cuiying had tried sneaking in to collect it before but had never succeeded. She had rummaged through every corner of their home but found nothing in the end. 0

All day long, she cursed and tormented Wen Qian relentlessly; yet Wen Qian gritted her teeth and endured without giving her any money. 0

Counting the cash from the box revealed it was indeed quite a sum. 0

Over these four years, for the first two years Lu Zheng sent money home every month; for these last two years he continued doing so along with compensation from her parents. 0

She had saved every penny she received without daring to spend any—only occasionally sneaking some candy for Xiao Chen when collecting money in town and making sure he ate it quietly. 0

Little did she know that this very money would endanger both her and her son's lives. 0

She took out some nearly expired tickets and local currency from inside before stuffing the box into a cloth bag to take with her. 0

Now they had fallen out completely, and if a fire broke out and burned the house down, they would lose everything. 0

Wen Qian pulled Lu Chen out of the room, ignoring the reactions of others in the courtyard. The curses behind her sounded like barking dogs. They climbed onto the ox cart at the village entrance. 0

The woman sitting beside her smiled at Wen Qian, saying, "Lu Zheng is taking money again!" 0

"Yes, taking money," Wen Qian replied. 0

The woman looked at Lu Chen beside her and gently touched his small face, feeling a pang of sympathy. "You know, don't blame me for being nosy. Lu Zheng sends money home every month. You and little Chen must be living well enough; it's better to cook for yourselves than to support a whole family. Look at little Chen—he's so thin and small for his age, shorter than your brother's boy, Xiao Wen." 0

The woman had watched Lu Zheng grow up. "Don't listen to the gossip in the village; he would never do anything to hurt you." 0

Hearing the woman's words warmed Wen Qian's heart but also filled it with bitterness. Over the years, Lu Zheng had never come home; he only sent money and never even wrote a letter. The villagers said he had someone else outside and no longer cared for her and Lu Chen. At first, Ding Cuiying's attitude towards her wasn't so bad, but it had worsened over the years. 0

In fact, after she died in her previous life, she hadn't been reincarnated. Perhaps it was due to her deep-seated resentment that she found herself existing as a ghost. When she arrived at the old Lu family home, she discovered that Lu Zheng had come back. 0

It was truly laughable; he hadn't come when she and Lu Chen were alive but only showed up after their deaths, as if he were waiting for them to die so he could make room for his woman outside. 0

However, things did not unfold as she had imagined. Lu Zheng decisively dealt with everyone in the old Lu family; those who needed to go to jail were sent there, and his two nephews had vanished without a trace—those who remained were either crippled or half-paralyzed. 0

By the time he found his son, Lu Chen's body was already decomposed beyond recognition, discarded in a desolate area. 0

She hated him deeply; if it weren't for him, she and Lu Chen wouldn't have met such a tragic end. He hadn't come sooner or later but had waited until after their deaths. 0

When Wen Qian opened her eyes again, her gaze was bloodshot with resentment and struggle as she tightly held Lu Chen in her arms. In this life, even without him, she could still raise her son well. However, she still needed him to handle some matters; whether to rely on him would depend on how he performed moving forward. 0

The ox cart swayed its way into the city, and Wen Qian took Lu Chen straight to the post office. She took out a yellowed piece of paper from her pocket and nervously dialed the number. 0

Beep beep beep... 0

The call connected, and a man's voice came through. "Hello?" 0

It wasn't Lu Zheng, and Wen Qian let out a sigh of relief. 0

"Excuse me, are you part of the military?" 0

"Yes, how can I assist you?" 0

"Could you please connect me to Lu Zheng? I’m his wife." 0

After she spoke, there was silence on the other end of the line. 0

The communication officer was taken aback. Everyone in the unit knew that Captain Lu was married, but no one had seen his wife or received any calls or telegrams from her. All they knew was that Captain Lu sent money home every month without fail. There had been ongoing speculation within the unit about whether his marriage was genuine or not. Rumors circulated that Captain Lu didn't even like his wife, and many young women in the unit were interested in him. 0

Wen Qian cautiously asked, "Is he not at your base?" 0

The communication officer quickly snapped back to reality. "No, Sister-in-law, I'll get Captain Lu for you right away." 0

At that moment, Lu Zheng was training on the drill field when a soldier came to inform him that his wife had called. Everyone around quickly gathered closer; it was indeed a rare event for Captain Lu's wife to call. 0

Lu Zheng was momentarily stunned before rushing over. Why would she call? Was something wrong? 0

He had been trying hard not to disturb her and Lu Yao. 0

Panting as he ran, when he finally took the phone, he felt a sudden difficulty in breathing. He tried to steady himself but could tell his voice trembled slightly. 0

"Hello, this is Lu Zheng." 0

Upon hearing the calm and composed voice of the man, Wen Qian felt a pang in her nose, her tone laced with uncontainable anger. "I’m Wen Qian. If you don’t come soon, my son and I might not make it." 0

Lu Zheng was bewildered. What did she mean? 0

"That’s exactly what I mean! Hurry up and come! If you’re late, we might not even get a chance to see each other one last time." 0
