Did I really have to venture into that kind of place just for a male model?
(Actually, it wouldn’t be the worst thing.)
I thought coming abroad would be a way to relax, but now my mind was racing. Who knows, I might even think about this tonight. My heart raced a little faster at the thought. Abs, handsome guys, and those eye-catching scenes kept flashing in my mind, making my cheeks flush involuntarily.
Just as I was getting lost in thought, my phone rang at the most inconvenient time, the sound piercing through the quiet room.
An unknown number—one I knew all too well.
What a buzzkill!
I clicked my tongue in annoyance and reluctantly answered the call just as it was about to end.
“Mu Jiu, you really know how to enjoy yourself! You’ve gone abroad to play, and I heard from Yun Yun that you went to that male model place? Oh my, that’s something else! There are all sorts of people there! You’re from a prestigious family; how could you go to such a place?”
The voice on the other end belonged to Ji Yuyan, sharp and grating like nails on glass, making me feel extremely uncomfortable.
I rolled my eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck.
My stepmother really had a knack for speaking in such an irritating tone.
Traveling abroad? I had informed my family about it; that was understandable. The male model place I went to was recommended by a good friend of mine—how could she possibly know about it?
Clearly, this was another scheme by Ji Yuyan and her daughter trying to find something to hold over me so they could make things difficult for me at home.
Taking a deep breath, I suppressed my rising anger. “Aunt Ji, given our relationship, you shouldn’t worry so much about me. If you have something to say, just say it! I don’t have time for your cryptic remarks.”
I furrowed my brows slightly, impatience evident on my face. I didn’t want to say another word to her, but I still maintained an air of authority befitting a young lady.
“It’s nothing serious; it’s just that the Ye family’s banquet is coming up soon. I wanted to ask why you’re not attending.”
Her tone was no longer as arrogant as before; instead, it carried a hint of careful probing.
“What does it matter to you if I don’t go, Aunt Ji? Are you hoping to flirt with some wealthy young man at the banquet?”
I scoffed mockingly, my words dripping with disdain.
I knew exactly what this woman was after—she was simply coveting the benefits and connections that came with attending the Ye family’s banquet.
On the other end of the line, Ji Yuyan was momentarily speechless, choked by Chi Mu Jiu's merciless words. Even through the screen, Chi Mu Jiu could envision Ji Yuyan's furious face, her features twisted in anger, undoubtedly gritting her teeth in frustration yet feeling helpless.
The Ye family was the most powerful family in the city, a titan in the business world. Their banquets were always the events that social elites flocked to. However, the upcoming banquet hosted by the Ye family, scheduled for two days later, had a new rule: only the legitimate offspring of all the city's wealthy families were invited. This stipulation undoubtedly raised the bar and added an air of exclusivity and mystery to the event.
As the eldest daughter of the Chi family, Chi Mu Jiu naturally received her invitation. In contrast, Chi Qiyun was eager to mingle with wealthy and influential young men but lacked the qualifications to attend such a prestigious gathering due to her status. This was why Ji Yuyan had resorted to underhanded tactics, attempting to extract an invitation from her.
"I'm hanging up if there's nothing else," Chi Mu Jiu declared, disregarding any further words from the woman on the other end and promptly ending the call. She had no intention of wasting another second on this tedious entanglement.
Did they think they could use her invitation to attend the banquet? Their calculations were clever, but she knew their intentions all too well. She was already prepared; her invitation lay quietly in her suitcase at that very moment.
She truly couldn't understand why her father had chosen such a shallow woman as Ji Yuyan. Even Ji Yuyan's daughter, Chi Qiyun, embodied a façade of innocence that belied her scheming nature. Often, she wondered if every prominent family like hers came with a wicked stepmother and a manipulative sister as standard accessories.
