Gu Qingning felt a wave of melancholy wash over her. Ever since she learned of Gu Yuxuan's death, she had been somewhat saddened. Gu Yuxuan had been born with asthma and had spent his brief life confined to a small courtyard, suffering through his days.
She was no saint; she couldn't claim to have any deep feelings for Gu Yuxuan. The little bit of blood relation they shared had already been squandered by Gu Yan.
Feng Ren entered to report, "My lord, Jin Sha has arrived."
Pei Zhijing lowered his eyelids and quietly acknowledged the news. After Feng Ren left, Pei Zhijing looked at Gu Qingning, who was reading a medical book, and spoke, "Qing'er, Jin Sha is here. What do you plan to do with that mother and son?"
"Let’s wait a couple of days until after Gu Yuxuan's funeral," she replied. Considering the funeral, Gu Qingning wanted to give Li Ruofeng some dignity. This was the last shred of familial affection she could offer Gu Yuxuan as an older sister.
Before her wedding, she had sent Jin Sha to Anzhou to bring the mother and son to the capital. Although Gu Yan was despicable, Gu Yuxuan had never harmed her in any way. This would be the last bit of dignity she could afford him.
Gu Qingning's attitude towards Gu Yuxuan was one of following fate and accepting destiny.
Three days had passed since Gu Yuxuan's burial, and Gu Yan remained in the Marquis's residence to care for Li Ruofeng.
On this day, a mother and son appeared at the entrance of the Zhongyuan Marquis's residence. They were Chen Die, a concubine placed in Anzhou by Gu Siyuan, along with her nine-year-old son, Gu Zan.
Standing outside the gate with her neck stretched out, she eagerly scanned for the person she wished to see. Finally, she spotted him.
“Father!”
With keen eyes, Gu Zan immediately saw Gu Siyuan stepping out from the threshold and joyfully ran up to shout.
At first, Gu Siyuan did not recognize his son's voice. It wasn't until Gu Zan stood before him that he snapped back to reality.
"What brings you both to the capital?" he asked, his joy at seeing his son overshadowed by confusion.
Chen Die stepped forward, her heart racing at the sight of her long-missed husband. "Husband, are you not happy that we have arrived in the capital?" she asked eagerly.
She had waited in Anzhou for Gu Siyuan to arrange for a proper position for her as a consort, hoping to bring her son to the capital. Year after year passed, and she thought she would spend her life hiding away in that small place, never to see the world beyond.
To her surprise, Gu Siyuan had sent someone to bring them to the capital. "Why didn’t you wait for me to make arrangements before coming?" he asked, a hint of discomfort on his face as he looked at Chen Die and her son.
"Wasn't it you who sent someone to fetch me?" Chen Die replied, recalling how the messenger had claimed to be sent by Gu Siyuan to escort them for a better life in the capital.
Having not seen Gu Siyuan for a long time, Chen Die was eager to reunite with him. Her son, Gu Zan, had often asked about his father. Trusting the messenger, she followed the young girl all the way to the capital.
For many years in Anzhou, aside from the loyal servant Xiao Anzi and the old matriarch of the Gu family, no one else knew about their existence.
"Did my mother send someone to fetch you? Why didn’t you inform me beforehand?" Gu Siyuan questioned, assuming that it was his mother who had orchestrated their arrival.
Chen Die remained silent, while Gu Zan pouted and whined, "Father, are you not happy we are here? Mother misses you very much, and so does Zan'er."
Behind Gu Siyuan stood Gu Changqing and his son, both with furrowed brows as they glanced at Chen Die and her son.
Feeling small under their gaze, Chen Die lowered her head and dared not look at them. She knew she had brought this trouble upon herself.
With a dismissive remark, Gu Changqing and his son climbed into their carriage and headed toward the palace. Gu Siyuan was already aware of his father's affairs with concubines outside.
