In the bridal chamber, the flickering red candlelight cast a warm glow on Gu Qingning's delicate face. Her cherry lips were as sweet as honey, and the man before her swallowed hard, barely noticeable.
"Let's freshen up first," he suggested.
"Um, I haven't eaten anything yet. Could someone bring me something to fill my stomach?" Gu Qingning asked shyly, her voice barely above a whisper.
It was still before dawn when Bai Zhi and Lu Yan hurriedly pulled Gu Qingning up from the bed. Her stomach growled loudly, making it hard for her to bear the hunger.
"Jin Sha, go have the kitchen send some warm food for the Consort," Bai Zhi instructed, glancing at Lu Yan.
Outside the door, Jin Sha heard her master's command and quickly rushed off to the kitchen.
Bai Zhi and Lu Yan exchanged glances. Just a couple of days ago, the matron had reminded them that Miss Gu would surely be hungry after leaving home, instructing them to prepare some food for her.
On their way here, they had already secretly slipped several pieces of cake to Miss Gu. When they offered her some fruit, she said she had enough. They thought nothing of it, believing she must have been satisfied.
As they waited for the servants to bring food, Gu Qingning lowered her head again, unable to look at Pei Zhiqing. The atmosphere grew tense.
Having experienced this in her past life, Gu Qingning felt nervous in front of this proud and noble man. Her palms were sweaty, her back tense, and a blush crept up from her cheeks to her ears. The sound of her heart pounding echoed in the fragrant room.
"Let's take off this dress," Pei Zhiqing said as he glanced at her heavy bridal gown.
Gu Qingning nodded and began to unfasten the intricate red garment. Halfway through, she realized there were several buttons at the back that she couldn't undo.
Just as she was about to call Bai Zhi for help from outside, she noticed that Pei Zhiqing had already moved behind her. Her face flushed deeply at his sudden closeness.
"I'll do it," he said hoarsely, his gaze fixed on her slender back.
In the customs of Dayan Kingdom, only the groom could remove the bride's wedding dress; no one else was permitted to assist in this task.
Feeling a tingling sensation along her back from his touch, Gu Qingning faced away from Pei Zhiqing, her entire body tense as she took a deep breath.
Pei Zhiqing, who was not very familiar with women's clothing, had gone through quite a bit of trouble and was now left with just one final step.
Suddenly, his breathing quickened as he stared at the alluring skin exposed before him. His heart raced, and his hand lingered on the last button of the wedding gown, hesitating to move.
"Are you done?" Gu Qingning asked after a long silence without any movement.
"Almost there." Taking a deep breath, the man finally undid the last button and quickly turned to grab a cloak, tilting his head to drape it over Gu Qingning's shoulders.
Feeling a chill on her back, Gu Qingning took a moment to realize that aside from the wedding gown, she was wearing nothing underneath. In an instant, just as she had managed to steady her emotions, her face flushed again, and her heart began to race!
"Your Highness, the food for the Princess has been prepared."
Just as the air thickened with tension, an announcement broke the awkwardness between them.
Seeing the array of appetizers on the table, Gu Qingning wasted no time in picking up chopsticks and began to eat eagerly. She was truly hungry!
Watching her devour the food, Pei Zhiqing frowned slightly. He took the chopsticks from her hand and quietly pushed a small bowl of yam and red date millet porridge toward her. "Start with this; it will be good for you."
