A night of chaos.
The next day, when Song Feiwan woke up, the space beside her was already empty. She touched the cold bed, feeling a twinge of disappointment in her heart.
While she was being attended to for her morning routine by the maidservant left by Xiao Yu, she was informed that he had been summoned by Consort Rong and had gone to the palace. Furthermore, arrangements had been made for her to leave the residence to meet the winter solstice procession. After the meeting, they would escort her back.
This rare thoughtfulness and the meticulous arrangements made Song Feiwan's mood shift from gloomy to bright.
Since returning from Jiangnan, Xiao Yu had been summoned by Consort Rong several times but had not responded. This time, his mother had issued an ultimatum, and he had some questions he wanted to ask Consort Rong and the Emperor, which prompted his early departure.
Upon arriving at Bixiao Palace, as soon as they met, Consort Rong inquired about the situation between him and Song Feiwan. Xiao Yu simply replied that matters between them were still unresolved and there was no need for his mother to worry.
Seeing his reluctance to speak, Consort Rong sighed. "Well, you are not one to easily open up. Knowing she is still alive brings me both shock and joy. Regardless of your misunderstandings, you should at least let me see her. Why are you hiding her away?"
Xiao Yu pressed his lips together, lowering his gaze as if lost in thought.
Consort Rong expressed her frustration. "Also, at this critical moment, suppressing the Ning family and forcing General Ning and his daughter to hide at the border is too harsh. Your father will be suspicious."
Xiao Yu let out a cold laugh, his arrogance evident as he clearly felt no guilt for his actions. The Ning family should be grateful that Song Feiwan was still alive; otherwise, their plight would be far worse than mere suppression. He would make them all regret ever living in this world.
"My father cannot touch me," he said indifferently.
His impenetrable demeanor only added to Consort Rong's headache. No matter how she tried to reason with him, he remained unbothered, and the atmosphere grew increasingly tense.
Finally, Xiao Yu asked why Consort Rong had believed that Song Feiwan was his beloved in the first place. After explaining her reasoning, Consort Rong noticed his confusion and furrowed brow.
"Is something wrong?" she asked upon seeing his expression.
As he was about to leave, Xiao Yu heard Consort Rong's worried voice. "Xiao Yu, think carefully about what is truly important to you. Don't do something you'll regret for the rest of your life."
Xiao Yu merely smiled faintly and did not respond, striding away. He had never regretted anything in his life and did not believe anything could hold him back in the future.
At that moment, he was unaware that he would soon pay the most painful price for his actions.
He did not ask for permission but sought out the Emperor directly. Upon seeing him, the Emperor dismissed those around him, narrowing his eyes with an inscrutable expression. "The Fourth Prince has arrived? I've already heard from your mother about you and Princess Chen. Why didn't you bring her into the palace?"
"What would I bring her into the palace for?" Xiao Yu replied coolly. "So she can call you 'Father Emperor' as well?"
The Emperor's expression shifted slightly. "Since she is your princess, isn't it only right for her to call me 'Father Emperor'?"
"Is she merely my princess?" Xiao Yu shot back.
"What have you investigated?"
"Not much. For instance, many years ago, you forcibly took a minister's wife."
The Emperor's face changed abruptly at being exposed by his own son, anger flashing in his eyes like cold steel.
Yet Xiao Yu did not flinch or shy away; he held the Emperor's gaze steadily.
If it weren't for the incident in Wujin City when he and Song Feiwan had reunited, and the Emperor's guards had intervened at an inopportune moment, he might not have pursued this investigation further.
After calming down, Xiao Yu pondered seriously for a moment.
