As the team left the territory of Wujin City, they were intercepted by Rong Jiayi and his men.
Two tall men were mounted on horses, once brothers, now filled with resentment towards each other.
Xiao Yu spoke coldly, "Considering our past relationship, if you retreat now, I will spare your life."
Rong Jiayi sneered in response, "Xiao Yu, don't be too arrogant. I am older than you and have served as your advisor. Out of both reason and sentiment, I should give you some leeway. But don’t think for a moment that I fear you."
He glanced back at the carriage. "I cannot allow you to take her away."
Xiao Yu let out a scoff, his eyes suddenly filled with murderous intent as he placed his hand on the hilt of his sword.
"You still remember you are my elder brother and a minister! Do you have even a shred of shame for betraying me?!"
Thinking of how he had treated Song Feiwan, Xiao Yu was so furious he felt like he could crush his teeth, his eyes turning bloodshot with rage, wishing he could skin him alive!
He raised his sword, his voice cold as if it had not seen warmth for a thousand years. "If you don’t leave, then die."
Rong Jiayi pressed his lips together, offering no defense. His gaze was steady and unflinching, ready for battle.
The atmosphere was tense, ready to ignite at any moment when the carriage door swung open from within, and Song Feiwan hurriedly stepped out.
The two men’s gazes immediately converged on her.
Seeing her safe and in good spirits eased Rong Jiayi's worried heart slightly.
"Your Highness," Song Feiwan said as she lifted her skirt and rushed to Xiao Yu's side, pleading, "Please allow me to speak with Lord Rong for a moment."
If Xiao Yu had seemed like a glacier before, now that glacier had shattered; he looked at Song Feiwan with eyes that could pierce through her soul, his voice laced with ice. "What is there to discuss? Are you reluctant to part with him?"
Song Feiwan's heart was in turmoil; she didn’t know how to explain herself but promised sincerely that she would only say a few words. "Your Highness, I promised to return to the capital with you; I will not go back on my word."
Seeing that Xiao Yu remained silent and stern-faced, Song Feiwan raised her hand and swore to the heavens, "If I lie this time, may lightning strike me!"
Before she could finish her words, Xiao Yu interrupted impatiently. "Enough! My patience is limited."
He shot a murderous glare at Rong Jiayi; the warning was clear without words.
Not far from there stood a tree with little cover around it.
Song Feiwan nodded gratefully and signaled Rong Jiayi to follow her.
They moved under the tree where Song Feiwan turned her back to Xiao Yu but could still feel two piercing gazes weighing heavily upon her like needles in her back.
Rong Jiayi looked at her anxiously and asked, "Wanwan, he hasn’t harmed you, has he?"
Song Feiwan thought for a moment and shook her head seriously.
In fact, she found it quite incredible. Given what she had done before, Xiao Yu would have been justified in punishing her severely. Yet here she stood, completely unharmed. Even the marks left from those three days had vanished entirely.
That’s good. Rong Jiayi confirmed that she was telling the truth and finally let out a sigh of relief.
“Don’t worry,” he said firmly. “I won’t let him take you away.”
Song Feiwan looked into his eyes and smiled faintly. “Thank you, Brother Rong, but I can’t accept that.”
“Feiwan?”
“I’m returning to the capital with His Highness willingly,” she explained earnestly. “What His Highness said before is true. Among us, I was the one who made mistakes, and I owe him an apology. I’m willing to accept the consequences.”
Rong Jiayi furrowed his brows, confused. “What exactly is going on?”
Song Feiwan pondered for a moment, realizing that her return to the capital might bring more trouble than good. If she didn’t speak now, she might never get the chance again. Moreover, Rong Jiayi genuinely cared for her.
She sighed softly and said, “The truth is, I didn’t know His Highness at all before; we weren’t lovers in any sense.”
