He didn't even glance at Song Feiwan, let alone say a word, as he swept away with a flick of his sleeve.
It was a long time before he began to think clearly. At that moment, it wasn't so much that he didn't want to face Song Feiwan, but rather that he didn't want to confront the stranger within himself.
Once he was far away, Song Feiwan completely lost her strength and collapsed onto the couch.
Dongzhi gasped and hurried over to support her. "Your Highness!"
The room was once again in chaos.
After taking her medicine, Song Feiwan rested in bed for two hours before her condition improved somewhat.
Dongzhi stayed by her side, her eyes red from crying. "Are you feeling any better?" she asked anxiously.
Song Feiwan nodded weakly. "Much better."
She had mainly been frightened by Xiao Yu.
But Dongzhi's thoughts wandered. "Was His Highness the Crown Prince angry because of what happened last night?"
What was the current situation at the original Song residence? They were surrounded by guards and unable to come and go freely; several members of the Song family were terrified and nursing their injuries in bed. Dongzhi muttered that it was a blessing they weren't dead.
Song Feiwan thought for a moment and instructed, "I need to focus on recovering these next few days. Keep an eye on the happenings in the residence, especially regarding His Highness."
Dongzhi nodded. "Understood."
However, Dongzhi was just a servant; there were matters that Xiao Yu forbade from leaking, and even Song Feiwan couldn't gather any information about them.
For instance, regarding the situation at the Song residence, it had already been reported to the Emperor that same day, with Crown Prince Xiao Yan personally filing the complaint.
In the Imperial Study, the Emperor watched as the two brothers faced off against each other with swords drawn.
Xiao Yan angrily accused Xiao Yu: "Your Highness, you serve in the Ministry of War, not in the Ministry of Justice or the Supreme Court! How can you casually resort to private punishment against court officials? Do you still have any regard for the law or for our father?!"
Xiao Yu scoffed. "Brother, don't speak so sanctimoniously. If your Crown Princess were harmed, would you still be able to stand there so high and mighty and criticize me?"
Before Xiao Yu could retort, he sneered and continued, "Look at me forgetting—your Crown Princess is already a mere shell of herself; perhaps in your heart, you have someone else in mind for that role? Should we invite General Ning into the palace to hear your thoughts on this matter?"
Xiao Yan's expression changed drastically. "Prince Chen! Don't slander me!"
"Then tell me, on what grounds do you stand to seek justice for the Song family?" Xiao Yu retorted sharply.
Xiao Yan shouted back, "Naturally, as the crown prince of the nation! When I encounter injustice, I must uphold fairness!"
Xiao Yu's piercing gaze struck like a hawk. "Then why didn't you come forward when my princess was poisoned and her life hung by a thread?"
Xiao Yan was momentarily speechless.
Xiao Yu continued, "You haven't even tidied up your own backyard, yet you have the audacity to lecture me?"
Xiao Yan's face flushed with anger. "You! How can you say such things!"
The Emperor, feeling a headache coming on, intervened. "Stop. Eldest, you are the crown prince; mind your demeanor."
Xiao Yan glared at Xiao Yu and begrudgingly replied, "Yes, Father."
The Emperor then turned to Xiao Yu. "Fourth, this time you acted impulsively."
Xiao Yu bowed respectfully. "I was just caught up in the moment; I hope Father will forgive me. After all," he paused for a moment, "my princess has endured for several years. Now that we are finally reunited, as her husband, I cannot allow her to suffer any further."
As for restoring her memory and the conflict with Song Feiwan, he had no intention of revealing that to them.
The royal family is cold-hearted. Only a wounded son can elicit more sympathy from those in power.
Sure enough, the Emperor's attitude softened considerably. "Well, it is understandable that you are worried about your princess. How is she faring now?"
"In response to Father’s inquiry," Xiao Yu said, "the poison within her has been suppressed for now, and her life is not in immediate danger."
"I will issue an edict summoning the finest doctors from across the realm to come to the capital and treat Princess Chen and detoxify her. You all need not worry too much."
"Thank you, Father." Xiao Yu bowed again.
"Have you found out who poisoned her?"
