As the wedding approached, Hao Chunying busied herself with preparations for Ye Fangfei's upcoming nuptials. The first task was to make the bedding, and since Hao Chunying only had one daughter, she had long since gathered the cotton and fabric needed for the quilts. Now, all that remained was to complete the sewing.
However, with her work schedule, she didn’t have time to do it all herself. So, she called Aunt Hao over to help her on her day off.
"Chunying, this quilt cover looks beautiful. It's hard to find such a vibrant red fabric," Aunt Hao remarked as she examined the material Chunying had laid out.
"Of course! This fabric was saved for me by an old friend who works at the goods building. Once this color comes in, it gets snatched up right away," Chunying replied, fondly stroking the quilt cover. "If you don’t reserve it ahead of time, there’s no chance of getting any."
"Is your friend still working there?" Aunt Hao asked, suddenly recalling something.
"Why do you ask?" Chunying inquired with curiosity.
"Well, your third nephew isn’t married yet, right? I think this quilt cover is lovely. You should mention it to your friend and see if she can save me a couple of pieces if they have more in stock," Aunt Hao suggested.
"Is that all? I thought you were going to say something serious!" Chunying laughed. "Sure, I’ll talk to her about it."
"Sister, since you’re preparing quilt covers, does that mean my third nephew has someone special?" Chunying asked.
"Oh no, I’m just being proactive," Aunt Hao replied.
"That makes sense. These things don’t spoil, so it’s better to get them ready early than to be caught unprepared later," Chunying agreed.
"Exactly!" The two women chatted as they deftly began sewing the quilts together. Ye Fangfei couldn’t contribute much to this task and instead watched from the side, occasionally offering assistance.
At noon, Ye Fangfei prepared lunch for everyone. After they finished eating, the two resumed their sewing with renewed energy.
With a rush against time, they finally completed two sets of bedding just before sunset. With the quilts finished, it was time to prepare some additional items needed for the bride—things like washbasins, thermoses, and soap dishes.
Hao Chunying handed all the money to Ye Fangfei, instructing her to buy what she needed. There was also the wedding dress that needed to be prepared for the big day.
Ye Fangfei watched as Hao Chunying brought out several pieces of flawed fabric, which she had turned into bed sheets and covers. By the time Tang Zhi returned from his trip, Ye Fangfei still hadn't finished her shopping.
Tang Zhi went straight to his father-in-law's house upon his arrival. This time, he had driven to Haishi, and Aunt Fang had taken special care of him knowing he was getting married. After all, everyone knew that Haishi was at the forefront of trends.
This sentiment applied not only to modern times but also to their current era. Tang Zhi appreciated Aunt Fang's good intentions; after all, who wouldn't want to be related to someone in a leadership position? The benefits of having such connections were evident—not that it was about gaining favors, but even small conveniences could make a difference.
"Feifei, this is a dress I bought for you in Haicheng. It’s red, perfect for our wedding," he said, presenting her with the garment. "And here’s a sailor shirt; I noticed many people in Haicheng wearing them, so I got you one too."
He continued to pull out seven or eight pieces of clothing he had purchased for Ye Fangfei, including a pleated skirt and a short-sleeved top.
