Zeng Liang smiled and asked, "Do you know him?"
After a long pause, Deng Gang shook his head and replied, "I... do not know him!"
"Oh, really? But he knows you, and he walked out from your Hero Gathering Pavilion, only to be brought here by my subordinates. That doesn’t add up," Zeng Liang's piercing gaze fell upon the man with small eyes and a large nose.
The man’s flesh quivered, and with a thud, he knelt on the ground, crying out, "Constable Zeng, I am Lin Kong, a member of the original sect. I heard that in Mou Shui City there is a person named Li Changjiang who possesses an ancient jade piece over a thousand years old. Unable to resist my curiosity, I brought my companion Shan Jie along to take a look. If it was genuine, I intended to buy it. But unexpectedly, this Deng Gang! He was so afraid we would snatch the jade that he acted ruthlessly and killed Shan Jie. I managed to escape by hiding in a manure pit because I was a step slower. Later, when I tried to disguise myself to flee the tavern, I was intercepted by Constable Zeng's men. Everything I say is true; not a single word is false. I, Lin Kong, swear to the heavens!"
Zeng Liang quietly waited for Lin Kong to finish speaking before turning to look at Sun Man beside him.
Sun Man was visibly excited and focused intently on Deng Gang, shouting, "Why don’t you confess?"
Deng Gang’s eyelids twitched incessantly as he forced a smile and said, "Sir, Constable Zeng, how can we only listen to this fellow's one-sided story? He is simply spouting nonsense without any evidence!"
Zeng Liang chuckled lightly and suddenly asked, "I wonder if Shookeeper Deng wore this purple robe last night?"
Deng Gang replied, "Of course it was this outfit." Zeng Liang smiled slightly and said, "Is that so? Then whose black robe is this?"
As soon as Zeng Liang finished speaking, another Bounty Hunter came upstairs holding a black robe with golden patterns. The robe had black gold threads and prominently displayed rows of golden buttons; there were four gold buttons on the left sleeve but only three on the right sleeve—missing the middle one.
Deng Gang looked at the black robe with an expression of despair in his eyes.
Zeng Liang noticed Deng Gang's subtle change and slowly spoke, "This robe was taken from one of your concubines in your other residence; it certainly wouldn’t have been hers to wear, would it?"
Zeng Liang reached into his bosom and pulled out a Gold Button, identical to the one on the black robe. Coldly, he said, "This Gold Button was taken from the victim's hand. It must have slipped off when you killed Shan Jie, and now it has become your damning piece of evidence."
Sun Man nodded and asked, "Deng Gang, do you have anything to say?"
Deng Gang's lips trembled slightly, but he had not yet spoken.
Suddenly, a figure burst out from the adjacent room. Dressed in white and looking pale, it was none other than Li Changjiang.
Li Changjiang shouted loudly, "That's right! He killed him! I know it all!"
Sun Man laughed heartily and turned his gaze away from Li Changjiang. Before he could focus, a figure lunged at him.
At that moment, Deng Gang's eyes gleamed with malice. A sharp blue knife was already in his hand, aimed directly at Sun Man's neck. Clearly realizing he could no longer evade responsibility, he intended to take Sun Man hostage and fight back desperately.
Just as Deng Gang was about to pounce on Sun Man, Zeng Liang suddenly reached out a hand and swiftly pulled Sun Man aside. Deng Gang's plan failed as he lost sight of his target. Attempting to halt his momentum proved too late; he shot forward like an arrow released from its bow, staggering at the staircase before tumbling down.
The crowd rushed over to check, only to find Deng Gang had crashed headfirst into the corner of the stairs. A large gash opened on his head, blood gushing out as he lay lifeless.
Wang Long spat angrily and cursed, "Serves him right! Truly a fitting retribution!"
Sun Man was still in shock, trembling uncontrollably. Zeng Liang handed him a cup of wine to calm his nerves.
Meanwhile, Li Changjiang, crouched before Sun Man, was terrified by Deng Gang's gruesome death. Gripping Sun Man's pant leg tightly, he murmured, "It was Deng Gang who killed him; I had nothing to do with it—really! Sir, I swear I had no part in this."
He reached into his bosom and said, "Everything is caused by this!"
Zeng Liang stared intently at the object in Li Changjiang's hand, and amidst a haze of light, a piece of palm-sized white jade, as pure and translucent as snow, appeared before everyone.
Sun Man's small eyes widened in disbelief as he couldn't help but ask, "Is this... the ancient jade?"
"Indeed, this is the Thousand-Year-Old Jade—'Blood Dragon Jade,'" Li Changjiang pronounced each word clearly.
