"Great-Grandma, we've been sunbathing all day today. Do we still need to continue?"
Ruan Fuxi winced at the term "Great-Grandma."
"Don't call me that."
Sun Fan quickly replied, "I can't! Great-Grandma, I can only rely on you to save me now!"
Sun Fan lay on the bed with his phone in hand, while a photographer nearby was too scared to go home.
The two had spent the entire day on the rooftop with a mat under the sun, doing nothing until the sun set before returning. Now, they were feeling a bit dizzy from the heat.
Ruan Fuxi texted back, "You two broke quite a few taboos during your paranormal exploration livestream. It's lucky you're still alive."
Sun Fan cried through the screen, "Great-Grandma, I know I was wrong! Please just tell me how to save myself!"
Ruan Fuxi thought for a moment and replied, "I'll come find you tomorrow morning. Send me your address."
She had classes in the afternoon but could spare some time in the morning.
When Sun Fan saw her message, it was as if he had grasped a lifeline. "Okay, Great-Grandma! I'll send it to you right now. Do I need to prepare anything for tomorrow?"
Ruan Fuxi responded, "Find an open space, buy incense and joss paper, and prepare three offerings along with water and wine."
Sun Fan immediately agreed and placed an order for incense and joss paper that very night. He worried that if he bought the offerings tonight, they wouldn't be fresh for tomorrow, so he planned to go to the market first thing in the morning.
The photographer beside him watched with hesitation. He thought to himself that they used to be materialists, but now they seemed more devout than anyone else. If he had known it would come to this, he would have never dared to take such risks before.
Noticing the photographer's gaze, Sun Fan asked directly:
"What kind of look is that? Are you buying or not?"
The photographer was quite decisive.
"Buying!"
Ruan Fuxi finished her conversation with Sun Fan and was about to put down her phone when a notification popped up showing a payment of five hundred thousand.
She felt a bit puzzled, and the next moment, she received a call from Su Shi.
On the other end, a somewhat guilty voice came through: "Fuxi, didn’t I say I would report your case to the department? After several layers of approval, the reward has come down, but it’s only fifty thousand."
Su Shi thought that fifty thousand was a bit low. He knew that this amount was nothing significant for Fuxi. After all, she could easily command seven-figure rewards now.
Ruan Fuxi understood upon hearing this: "So that’s what it is. It’s fine."
Her intention wasn’t really about the money.
Su Shi continued, "Fuxi, are you interested in joining the Institute of Paranormal Studies?"
This wasn’t the first time Ruan Fuxi had heard of this organization, but she didn’t know much about it.
Su Shi explained, "The Institute of Paranormal Studies is a special department under the government that deals with cases related to metaphysics. They also handle matters like national feng shui trends and auspicious date calculations."
Ruan Fuxi was somewhat intrigued, but she didn’t want to be constrained.
Su Shi seemed to guess her concerns and added, "If you’re willing to join, you can be an invited member of the institute. This way, you’ll enjoy the privileges and resources of the institute while only needing to assist when metaphysical cases arise."
In short, as an invited member, Ruan Fuxi would have freedom while also benefiting from what the institute had to offer.
Ruan Fuxi was curious: "Is the treatment at this institute the same for everyone? Is it really that flexible and free?"
Su Shi explained, "Of course not. Most people in the institute are formal members. You’re exceptional, which is why you’re being invited as an exception."
Master Zhao Lin from the research institute had visited the vegetable market several times before, but he had not been able to resolve the issue completely.
