Ruan Anmu's household registration could indeed prove that she was Ruan Changlin's daughter. Having spent so long in the welfare home, her registration had now been moved to the Ruan family in the capital. She could find evidence from her childhood, but that would inevitably take some time.
Ruan Anmu furrowed her brows. "Xiao Xi, what should we do now?"
Ruan Fuxi thought to herself that perhaps she could fold a paper figure and have the other party sneak out the case files. In extraordinary times, one must use extraordinary methods. She couldn't just leave empty-handed.
Just as Ruan Fuxi was preparing to put her plan into action, Sheng Yanzhou said, "I'll make a phone call." He stepped outside and spoke briefly on the phone before returning.
Before long, the director came out, looking at Ruan Fuxi and the others with a friendly demeanor that carried a hint of respect. "Miss Ruan, you’re here to inquire about a car accident case from ten years ago, right? I've already had someone start organizing it; it will be ready for you shortly."
Ruan Fuxi nodded. "Thank you."
She glanced at Sheng Yanzhou, knowing that the change in attitude was surely related to his earlier phone call. Sheng Yanzhou met her gaze and smiled gently. He felt pleased to be of help to Xiao Xi.
The director added, "You're welcome."
Soon after, Ruan Fuxi received the case files regarding Bai Tang's fatal car accident. Ruan Anmu leaned in closer to look as well. The report stated that the driver had shown no signs of misconduct before or during driving; there was no indication of alcohol consumption or fatigue. Yet he himself could not explain why he suddenly collided with someone.
After being arrested, the driver said, "I was completely dazed at that moment. I felt like I wasn't myself; it was as if someone else was controlling me. After I hit someone, I had no sensation at all. I didn’t even know how I left the scene. If I had known I had hit someone, I definitely wouldn’t have fled."
Ruan Fuxi reviewed the investigation into the driver; he had a clean background with no criminal record and a happy family life. He was an experienced driver who had not committed any traffic violations throughout the year and rarely had points deducted from his license.
After reviewing all the records, she fell into deep thought.
The police did not believe the driver's testimony, thinking that his claim of being controlled was merely an excuse to evade responsibility. However, Ruan Fuxi felt differently. She believed that what the driver said might be true. The driver had been sentenced to seven years in prison for a hit-and-run and had just been released; finding him again would take some time. The records indicated that he was a local, but she wondered if he had moved.
Ruan Fuxi memorized the information before returning the file. "Thank you."
Once the four of them left the police station, Ruan Anmu asked, "Xiaoxi, are we going to find this driver?"
Ruan Fuxi nodded. "I noticed that the address he registered is right here in this town. Let's see if we can locate him."
In addition to the written records, she thought that speaking to the driver in person might yield unexpected results.
So, the four of them headed to the address listed in the records. It was a two-story small building that looked somewhat old. The backyard was fenced off and used for growing vegetables and raising chickens and ducks.
Ruan Fuxi stepped forward and knocked on the door. After a long wait, a man in his forties answered. He appeared worn and haggard, as if he had endured many hardships.
Seeing Ruan Fuxi and her well-dressed companions, he looked surprised. "Did you come to the wrong place? I don’t know anyone like that."
