Sheng Yanzhou suppressed his thoughts and awkwardly curled the corners of his lips.
"Hello, Miss Ruan. I have prepared the herbs in advance; please take a look."
After speaking, Sheng Yanzhou maneuvered his wheelchair to the desk, where several boxes of herbs were placed—specifically, the Rehmannia, Angelica, and Fo-Ti that Ruan Fuxi needed.
His hands, hidden behind the desk, rested on his legs as he unconsciously clenched his fists. He was now a disabled person who could not walk, and worse yet, he was a disabled person with a short life expectancy. Even if he had a bit of money, how could he ever be worthy?
For the first time in his life, Sheng Yanzhou truly felt the sting of inferiority.
Then he recalled her earlier self-introduction: Ruan Fuxi. The name sounded somewhat familiar; upon reflection, it belonged to the daughter of the Ruan family. More importantly, Ruan Fuxi had once been infatuated with his nephew, Fu Sihan—one could even say she was obsessed.
Sheng Yanzhou's expression darkened involuntarily as he subconsciously compared himself to Fu Sihan. In terms of appearance and wealth, he was confident that he was not lacking at all—he might even surpass him in many aspects, and they were of similar age. However, when it came to health, he had to admit that he fell short.
With a sigh in his heart, Sheng Yanzhou genuinely hoped that the master summoned by the old man today could cure his leg ailment and change his fate. He always felt an inexplicable urge to hold the hand of the person before him, to stand protectively in front of her and make her happy.
At that moment, Ruan Fuxi had already opened the herb boxes and began inspecting them. A hint of surprise escaped her lips.
"The Angelica is actually ten years old—better than I expected."
She then closed the box and said to Sheng Yanzhou, "These herbs are excellent; they are precious. I can buy them from you or exchange them for something else."
Before meeting her, Sheng Yanzhou had intended to give them to her for free. Now that he saw her, he even wanted to gift her all the herbs in his collection. The Sheng family could provide for her without asking for anything in return.
"No need for that, Miss Ruan. These are meant for you."
Seeing his serious demeanor, Ruan Fuxi suddenly felt a playful urge to tease him or perhaps to validate something.
"But we are not related by blood; how can I accept such valuable gifts from you?"
Sheng Yanzhou listened to her speak, his mind only retaining the sound of her voice. After a moment, he replied, "Miss Ruan, you saved my friend, so there's no need to be so polite."
Ruan Fuxi observed his subtle expressions, her emotions nearly overwhelming her. The sight of Sheng Yanzhou, earnestly racking his brain for an excuse and unconsciously furrowing his brow while deep in thought, reminded her so much of her partner. Could he really be the Sheng Yanzhou of the Nine Sky Sect?
She had a soul contract with him, which meant that if she were to die, he would surely feel it. Was that why he had come after her? But if that were the case, why did he have no memories?
Was it because of the heavenly decree in this realm? Or perhaps they had no connection at all, and it was merely a coincidence?
A flurry of doubts flashed through Ruan Fuxi's mind. Sheng Yanzhou was concerned that she might take the herbs and leave immediately, so he instinctively sought a topic to keep her there a little longer.
"I heard you mention earlier that you are the Tidal Wave in the group," he said.
Ruan Fuxi pulled herself back from her thoughts. Regardless of anything else, he was still significant to her. She smiled and nodded, "That's me."
Sheng Yanzhou recalled the wild boar photo saved on his phone and asked out of curiosity, "What about the wild boar you ordered for takeout?"
Ruan Fuxi chuckled softly. "Besides fortune-telling, I also know a bit about beast taming."
A glimmer of astonishment flashed in Sheng Yanzhou's eyes.
