Xu Zhengguo instinctively wore a serious expression, thinking that the daughter of the Ruan family was indeed as everyone said—headstrong. He had tried to mediate, yet she still resorted to insults.
Ruan Fuxi glanced at him again and said, "If you don't believe me, why not go back home and take a look?"
Xu Zhengguo felt an inexplicable sense of unease from her gaze, which seemed to carry an elusive meaning. Remembering that he had dreamt about his deceased father for several nights in a row, he became increasingly unsettled. The more he thought about it, the more he felt there might be something to her words.
In that moment, he set aside everything else and focused on confirming the condition of his ancestral grave back home. He stepped back a few paces, took out his phone, and dialed someone.
"Village chief, it's me. What? There's been heavy rain at home recently? Alright, could you go up the mountain and check on my family’s grave? I’ll visit in a couple of days."
The others nearby fell silent for a moment as they watched Xu Zhengguo leave, noticing Ruan Fuxi's scrutinizing gaze.
"Is what she said true or false?" someone wondered aloud. It sounded quite convincing.
Yu Qi looked at the person who had spoken up for her, now easily swayed by Ruan Fuxi's words, her expression darkening.
Ruan Fuxi raised an eyebrow at her. "Miss Yu, you were quite eloquent when you were slandering me earlier. Why have you suddenly turned mute when it comes to explaining yourself?"
Yu Qi resembled a delicate white lotus swaying in the rain, shaken and on the verge of collapse from the confrontation.
Ruan Fuxi was the one who had splashed water on her earlier. Seeing Yu Qi like this made Ruan Fuxi feel somewhat weary.
"Why do you insist on playing the victim? Can't you come up with some new tactics?"
As both sides reached a stalemate—especially with Ruan Fuxi seemingly pressuring Yu Qi—someone else stepped forward.
The newcomer appeared friendly and said, "Let’s not make a big deal out of this small matter. You two seem to be good friends; don’t make it too ugly."
Liu Fan had just arrived after hearing there was some excitement and immediately widened his eyes upon hearing his father’s words.
His heart sank.
He quickly stepped forward to pull his father back and whispered in his ear, "Dad, this is Miss Ruan's business; don’t get involved."
"Whatever you do, don’t provoke this ancestor!"
Liu Chengye noticed the nervous expression on his eldest son's face and couldn't help but entertain a bold thought.
"Could it be that you have a crush on her?"
His son had always enjoyed hanging out at bars and admiring beautiful women. With Ruan Fuxi being so stunning, it was no surprise that as soon as he stepped in to mediate, his son immediately took her side. What else could it mean?
This realization caused Liu Chengye to feel conflicted. Ruan Fuxi was indeed beautiful, but her personality left much to be desired; after all, she wasn't even the biological daughter of the Ruan family. Yet, she did hold shares in the Ruan family business. If they were to get together, it might not be such a bad thing after all.
Just then, Liu Fan, hearing his father's words, straightened up in shock. "Dad, please don't say that! I'll explain everything to you later." He certainly didn't have the courage for such a thing!
He then turned to Ruan Fuxi and forced a smile. "Miss Ruan, please don’t take my dad’s words to heart. If you’re upset, just talk to him; it has nothing to do with me."
Ruan Fuxi smiled back at him.
Liu Fan instinctively took two steps back and even pushed his father forward a bit.
After sizing up Liu Chengye for a moment, Ruan Fuxi said, "Congratulations on the new addition to the Liu family."
Liu Chengye was still puzzled by his son's reaction, but upon hearing Ruan Fuxi's words and recalling the birth of his grandson, a smile crept onto his face.
"Yes, he was born just a few days ago. We’ll have a celebration when he turns one month old."
However, Liu Fan felt that Ruan Fuxi wouldn't bring up this matter without reason and couldn't help but ask further:
