Jiang Lian'er was framed and accused of having an affair with a man outside the Jiang Residence. On this day, Wang had bribed a servant to pretend to meet her in secret outside her door, deliberately making noise to attract attention.
Inside her room, Jiang Lian'er was engrossed in studying an ancient text when she suddenly heard the commotion outside. Startled, she quickly regained her composure, a skill honed from years of independent living.
She scanned the room swiftly and noticed something amiss. Several items that did not belong to her were carelessly placed in plain sight, and there were signs that her clothes had been rummaged through. Realizing it was a carefully orchestrated trap, she decided to turn the tables.
Without revealing her intentions, she instructed Cui'er to sneak out through the back door and summon Pei Yichen.
Then, she raised her voice deliberately, feigning panic. "Who are you? Why are you here?" Her tone was laced with just the right amount of fear and confusion.
When the crowd burst into the room, Jiang Lian'er pretended to be innocent, tears welling in her eyes as she pointed at the suspicious items. "Everyone, I, Jiang Lian'er, have always adhered to propriety. My days are spent reading and embroidering in this room; how could I engage in such scandalous behavior? These items are of unknown origin, and I have never interacted with this servant. Clearly, someone is intent on framing me."
At that moment, Pei Yichen arrived just in time. He stood tall and composed, his expression serious yet reassuring. His presence silenced the room instantly as people instinctively parted to make way for him. Jiang Lian'er felt a flicker of relief upon seeing him but quickly resumed her pitiful demeanor.
Pei Yichen approached her and asked softly, "Miss Jiang, what has happened?"
Jiang Lian'er recounted the events with heartfelt sincerity and clarity. "Mr. Pei, I was in my room when I suddenly heard noise outside. Then this person appeared in my room along with these items..." She gestured toward the suspicious objects. "I truly do not know what to do."
Pei Yichen turned his sharp gaze toward the servant. "Who are you? Why are you here?"
The servant's eyes darted around nervously, unable to respond coherently.
Pei Yichen let out a cold snort. "It seems someone is trying to deliberately tarnish Miss Jiang's reputation."
The crowd began to murmur, their belief in Jiang Lian'er’s words wavering.
Seizing the opportunity, Jiang Lian'er spoke up, "Everyone, although I am not favored in this household, I still understand the meaning of honor and shame. My mother passed away early, and I have always been cautious with my words and actions, hoping to live peacefully in this residence. How could I possibly do something so self-destructive?"
Her voice trembled slightly, tinged with a hint of choking emotion that evoked sympathy from those present.
Pei Yichen nodded in agreement. "I know Miss Jiang well; there must be something amiss here."
At that moment, Wang Shi stepped forward, feigning surprise. "Lian'er, how could you do such a thing? What are we to do now?"
Jiang Lian'er met Wang Shi's gaze with unwavering determination. "Concubine, I respect you as an elder, but I have a clear conscience regarding this matter. I hope you can help me seek justice and uncover the person who is plotting against me."
Wang Shi felt a twinge of guilt under Jiang Lian'er's steady gaze and quickly looked away. "I... I will investigate this matter myself."
Jiang Lian'er understood that although she had temporarily deflected the crisis, her struggle against Wang Shi had only just begun.
She silently vowed to make Wang Shi pay for her actions, to protect herself and those around her, and to secure her place within the Jiang Residence.
