Since Sha Zhu was exposed for having a disease, he had been hiding in his house and rarely came out. Even when he did, people in the courtyard avoided him like he was a plague.
Qin Huairu took the time to go to the hospital for a check-up, and the news from the doctor left her in despair. She had been infected, but fortunately, it was just recently. As long as she cooperated with the treatment, her health wouldn’t face any major issues. Unfortunately, this disease was currently incurable, which meant she would have to take medication long-term to suppress the virus.
Even worse, to keep the virus from progressing, Qin Huairu needed forty yuan each month for her medication. She stumbled out of the hospital, unsure of what to do next. She only earned about thirty yuan a month, barely enough for her family’s living expenses; how could she possibly come up with another forty yuan for medicine?
Xiao Dang and Huai Sheng returned home exhausted after a day of training and found Qin Huairu staring blankly at home.
“Mom, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell today?” Xiao Dang asked with concern.
Jia Zhangshi chimed in sarcastically, “What’s wrong with her? She’s probably just missing a man!”
Xiao Dang and Huai Sheng didn’t take Jia Zhangshi’s words to heart. Qin Huairu’s eyes lit up when she saw them. “Xiao Dang, Huai Sheng, you’ve been working for over two months now; you must have received your wages by now, right? You’re still young; give your wages to Mom, and I’ll save them as your dowry!”
The two exchanged glances at the mention of their wages. “Mom, we’re still in training and haven’t officially started working yet. The boss only provides us lunch; we haven’t received any wages!”
Jia Zhangshi perked up at the mention of their wages. She had been eyeing their earnings since she first learned they had found jobs. Now that Xiao Dang said they hadn’t received anything for two months, Jia Zhangshi exclaimed, “What? You haven’t received any wages for two months? Why not? Have you been working hard all this time for nothing? Those greedy capitalists! Why didn’t you say anything sooner?”
“No way! I’m going to find your boss! He must pay you for these past two months; otherwise, I won’t let it go!”
Jia Zhangshi’s fiery temper was well-known; no matter how much she tried to rein it in, her stubbornness was ingrained in her bones and could surface at any moment.
Xiao Dang and Huai Sheng were terrified at the thought of Jia Zhangshi causing a scene. They had both worked hard for their positions; if Jia Zhangshi made a fuss, they might lose their jobs and wouldn’t know where else to find such decent work.
“Grandma, please don’t go! We’re just about to finish our training and start working officially. If you cause trouble and the boss decides not to keep us, all our efforts over these past two months will be wasted!”
After much pleading from the sisters, Jia Zhangshi finally relented.
“Alright, I’ll listen to you today. But once you start receiving your wages, each of you must give me ten yuan every month as living expenses. Otherwise, I’ll go make a scene at your workplace!”
“Okay, Grandma! Don’t worry; as soon as we get our wages, we’ll make sure to give you your living expenses!”
Xiao Dang and Huai Zhuang readily agreed! No matter what, they needed to first appease their grandmother; whether they would get the money later was another matter!
Seeing that Jia Zhang was quiet, Qin Huairu finally spoke up: "Xiao Dang, Huai Zhuang, from now on you two sisters can keep ten dollars for yourselves. The remaining thirty dollars will be given to Mom, and she will keep it safe for you!"
