Shazhu felt fortunate to be released at this time, as the country began to rectify past issues. The prison where he was held also started its own investigations, and it turned out that Shazhu, who had been sentenced to twenty years for a relatively minor offense and placed in a maximum-security prison, was among those scrutinized.
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that he had been wronged by someone influential, and that person had either stepped down or retired. After discussions among the leaders, they decided to release Shazhu early.
Thus, he found himself out of prison ten years ahead of schedule. It must be said that he had a bit of luck on his side; despite being incarcerated under such circumstances, he managed to survive and make it out alive.
As everyone thought the excitement had ended with Yi Zhonghai's departure and prepared to leave, Jia Zhangshi confronted Shazhu once more: "You fool! You just got out and already you're causing trouble for my daughter-in-law! You even hit me! You must give me an explanation, or I won’t let this go!"
Shazhu shrugged off Jia Zhangshi's accusations. "Jia old woman, you better back off! What evidence do you have that I harmed Qin Huairu? Come on! Qin Huairu, tell them if I did anything to you!"
Qin Huairu sat on the bed, covering herself with a blanket. She trembled with anger at Shazhu's shameless question. "You bastard! Do you not know in your heart whether you've harmed me? Asking me in front of so many people—if I admit it, how will I live with myself afterward?"
Reluctantly, she gritted her teeth and denied it. "Mother-in-law, you misunderstood. Shazhu just came in when you returned; he hasn’t done anything to me!"
Seeing Qin Huairu deny it so vehemently made Jia Zhangshi furious. Just as she was about to point a finger at Qin Huairu and scold her, Shazhu interrupted: "Jia old woman, you heard her! I haven’t done anything to your daughter-in-law! But why are you living in my house?"
With Shazhu's interruption, Jia Zhangshi momentarily forgot about scolding Qin Huairu. She boldly replied, "What’s wrong with living in your house? Living here means we think highly of you! My house is cracked and uninhabitable; your place is empty anyway. You should thank me for keeping an eye on your house! Otherwise, who knows when your house might collapse!"
Faced with Jia Zhangshi's unreasonable behavior, Shazhu didn’t waste any more words. He pushed her out decisively: "Jia Zhangshi, this house is mine now! You can get out!"
If Jia Zhangshi were so easily driven away, she wouldn’t be Jia Zhangshi. Although her temper had mellowed over the years, that was only if no one provoked her! Now that Shazhu wanted to kick her out, she certainly wasn’t willing to go.
"You ungrateful wretch! Why didn’t you die in prison? You come back just to throw me out!" she wailed. "Old Jia! Da Xu! Show some spirit and take this bastard away!"
The crowd watched Jia Zhangshi’s dramatic display with a sense of familiarity; it seemed like she hadn’t performed her spirit-calling routine in years! They almost forgot what it was like!
"Hey, Jia old woman, if you don’t want to move out, fine by me. But this is my home now. There’s only one bed here; if I decide to do something at night, don’t say I didn’t warn you!"
Shazhu ignored Jia Zhangshi’s theatrics and smirked at Qin Huairu while threatening her.
Jia Zhangshi quickly stopped her antics and yelled at Shazhu: "You beast! What do you think you're doing? Let me tell you—if you dare do anything inappropriate, I’ll call the police on you. Just wait for your punishment!"
Qin Huairu let out a bitter laugh from the bed. "Mother-in-law! Do we really need to wait for that? The things Shazhu should have done have already been done long ago. I have no doubt that if I don’t move out, this bastard would dare to harm me again at night!"
