"Dad, now that the country has opened up the market, Yu and I are thinking of opening a restaurant!"
Yu shot a glare at Yan Jiefang, feeling frustrated that she had to bring this up as his wife.
"Did you hear that Xiao Wang across the street is opening a restaurant? Is that why you want to do it too?"
Yan Bu Gui frowned at Yu.
"That's not entirely it," Yu replied, no longer hesitating. "I've seen some small restaurants opening up outside, and their business is thriving. I believe if we start our own restaurant, we can definitely make money!"
"But have you thought about it? Neither you nor the eldest can cook. How are you going to run a restaurant? Wang Jiefang is a national banquet chef; his restaurant will surely attract customers! How can you compete with him?"
Facing Yan Bu Gui's question, Yu was clearly prepared: "Dad, that's not a problem. We just need to hire a chef!"
Upon hearing about hiring a chef, Yan Bu Gui's expression changed: "Hiring a chef costs money, doesn't it? What if you don't make much profit and still have to pay the chef?"
"Oh come on, Dad! I've done the math; we won't lose money. At the very least, we'll earn more than what Jiefang makes now!"
Hearing this, Yan Jiefang's face darkened. After nearly ten years as a temporary worker, he felt embarrassed about his situation. But he couldn't help it; he had tried to talk to his superiors about getting promoted, but they refused to make him permanent!
This was partly his own fault; influenced by Yan Bu Gui's teachings, he often tried to be clever at work and cut corners. His coworkers were annoyed with him, and his superiors had a poor impression of him. It was a miracle he hadn't been fired; how could he expect to be promoted?
Yan Bu Gui shook his head at the thought of Yan Jiefang's job. Hearing Yu say that opening a restaurant could be profitable made him think that having one would also make meals more convenient for their family.
"Since you've both made up your minds, just go ahead and open it! Why are you asking me?"
Yu felt a bit awkward hearing Yan Bu Gui's response: "Well, Dad, you know we haven't saved much money over the years. We were hoping you could lend us some to start the restaurant!"
At the mention of borrowing money, Yan Bu Gui perked up: "Oh? How much do you plan to borrow?"
"I calculated it; about three thousand yuan should be enough!" Yu cautiously stated while observing Yan Bu Gui's expression.
"Three thousand? That's fine!"
Yu was surprised that her usually stingy father-in-law agreed without hesitation. She had planned to reduce the amount if she saw any change in his expression!
"Really, Dad? You’re willing to lend us three thousand yuan?" Yan Jiefang was equally astonished by Yan Bu Gui's response!
"What’s so surprising? You’re not outsiders; as your father, of course I’ll lend it to you!"
The couple found it hard to believe that their frugal father would so easily part with money. But then Yan Bu Gui added: "That said, even brothers need clear accounts; let alone I'm your father. I’ll lend you this money, but you’ll have to pay me four percent interest every month!"
Yan Jiefang knew his father wouldn’t easily lend him money but didn’t expect such harsh terms! Hearing Yan Bu Gui's conditions left him stunned: "Dad! That’s too harsh! Even high-interest loans don’t charge this much!"
If that's the case, I might as well get a loan from the bank. I've heard that the interest is less than one percent each month!
