The deaf old lady stared in disbelief at the empty box. Trembling, she reached inside and felt around, finally coming to terms with the fact that all the gold was gone! If Wang Jiefang had seen her reaction, he would have realized that the gold in this box had been taken to his space!
Furious, the old lady spat out a mouthful of blood! What frustrated her even more was that she had lost her gold but couldn't dare to shout about it! Thinking about the foolish Zhu waiting for her help, the old lady forced herself to calm down and buried the empty box again.
She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth and opened the door to step outside. "Xiao Yi, carry me to No. 88, Mao'er Hutong!"
Upon hearing the old lady's command, Yi Zhonghai carried her off. Although he was curious about what she had been doing inside, he didn't dare to ask directly.
Before long, they arrived at No. 88, Mao'er Hutong. Yi Zhonghai looked at the dilapidated courtyard with confusion. "Old lady, are you sure this is where you want to go?"
The old lady got off Yi Zhonghai's back. "That's right, this is it. Wait for me outside; I'll be back soon."
After entering, she headed straight for the southeast corner where a flourishing persimmon tree stood. The old lady stopped under the tree and after a brief search, pulled out a small shovel and began digging!
Before long, she unearthed a small box. With a nervous heart, she opened it and breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing ten neatly arranged large yellow fish inside!
Yi Zhonghai secretly followed behind her and was equally excited upon seeing the gold! He wished he could claim it all for himself immediately!
The old lady emerged holding the box, and Yi Zhonghai had already returned to his spot. Noticing Yi Zhonghai slightly out of breath, she knew he had followed her in!
She glanced at him lightly. "Let's go, Xiao Yi. Carry me to the Supervisory Department!"
"Alright, old lady!" Yi Zhonghai replied and hoisted her up again.
As they walked along, the old lady suddenly spoke up. "Xiao Yi, are you wanting the gold I have?"
Yi Zhonghai paused for a moment at her words. "Old lady, that's your gold; I never thought of taking it."
The old lady chuckled. "Oh Xiao Yi, just be honest with me. Who doesn't like gold? But this gold can't be given to you. Don't worry; as long as you serve me well, when I pass away in a hundred years, all my collected gold will be yours!"
In truth, the old lady no longer had any gold left. She was deliberately deceiving Yi Zhonghai; she understood that without dangling gold in front of him, he would never treat an old woman like herself well!
With the promise from the old lady in mind, Yi Zhonghai felt lighter on his feet as he carried her!
They soon arrived at the Supervisory Department, and Yi Zhonghai was surprised to find that the old lady actually knew the deputy director!
"Old lady, what brings you here?" The deputy director looked at her but seemed less than welcoming.
The old lady sighed. "I didn't expect that after all these years apart, you've become so accomplished! Back then your father..."
