Jia Zhang was truly formidable; upon arriving at the supervisory department, she immediately demanded to see the leadership. The leader welcomed her in, and Jia Zhang handed over her complaint letter. After asking her a few questions, they allowed her to leave.
When the leader opened the letter, he found that it only reported a cook stealing food from the kitchen. To them, this was a minor issue. However, since the complaint had been brought to their attention, the leader dispatched two inspectors to the steel mill to take a look and conduct an investigation.
As a result, Sha Zhu was caught red-handed. The arrest happened right at quitting time, and Yi Zhonghai happened to see Sha Zhu being escorted away by two men. He hurried over to the head of security, Zheng, and asked, "Director Zheng, I'm Yi Zhonghai, an eighth-level fitter from Workshop One. May I ask why Sha Zhu is being arrested?"
Director Zheng glanced at Yi Zhonghai and replied curtly, "It's none of your business, so stop snooping around!"
Yi Zhonghai felt a flash of anger at Zheng's words. He believed that even the factory director would show him some respect, yet this Director Zheng showed him none! This was clearly a sign of disrespect.
"Director Zheng, I have a very good relationship with Director Yang. He really enjoys the dishes that Sha Zhu makes! Could you please let me know what exactly Sha Zhu has done wrong?" Yi Zhonghai tried to leverage his connection with Director Yang in hopes of gaining some favor from Zheng.
"Absolutely not! Comrade Yi Zhonghai, if you continue to pry into this matter, I'll have you arrested too!" Unfortunately for Yi Zhonghai, mentioning Director Yang did not earn him any points with Zheng.
Zheng sneered inwardly; he thought to himself that even Director Yang might not be able to protect himself in this situation. How could Yi Zhonghai think he could pressure him with such a connection? It was ridiculous!
Zheng did not believe that the inspectors had come without notifying any leaders just to investigate a mere cook like Sha Zhu. Seeing that Zheng was unyielding, Yi Zhonghai turned and went to find Director Yang. When Director Yang heard that Sha Zhu had been detained by security, he assumed it was because Sha Zhu had tried to take leftover food home again. In the past, he would have just called and had him released, but since Sha Zhu had recently contradicted him, Director Yang thought it best for Sha Zhu to learn a lesson first.
So he quickly dismissed Yi Zhonghai with a few words. Left with no other options, Yi Zhonghai hurried back to the courtyard to seek help from the deaf old lady.
While Yi Zhonghai was busy outside, Sha Zhu was taken to a small storage room where a square-faced inspector questioned him. "Let’s talk about it, Comrade He Yuzhu. What’s the deal with the half chicken and one kilogram of pork in your lunchbox and the bag of flour?"
Sha Zhu stubbornly replied, "What’s there to talk about? I bought all this with my own money; how can I not take it home?"
"You bought it yourself!? Fine! I won’t ask where you bought it from; I’ll just ask you for the receipt."
"I threw that receipt away; keeping it is useless!"
Seeing that He Yuzhu refused to admit anything, another inspector entered the room at that moment. "Comrade He Yuzhu, it's okay if you don't want to confess; we already have evidence! That chicken and pork were leftovers from a meal hosted by your Director Yang that you took for yourself without permission, right?"
Upon hearing this, Sha Zhu's face changed instantly. The inspector continued coldly, "Comrade He Yuzhu, do you think you can just wriggle out of this? How many people witnessed what you did in the kitchen? Once we start our investigation, everything will become clear. So what? Are you still not going to confess?"
Sha Zhu realized that what this inspector said was true; those people in the kitchen would definitely throw him under the bus if they knew he was in trouble. With his head hanging low and feeling defeated, he muttered, "If you all know already, what else is there to ask?"
