"Liberation, can you explain what's going on?" Director Wang decided to ask Wang Jiefang about the situation.
"Director Wang, it’s like this. I just got home from work not long ago when several elders called for a meeting! As soon as the meeting started, one elder began to criticize me for no reason, saying I was not united and friendly, and that I had taken the job assigned to the young people in the neighborhood for my wife. As soon as Wang Jiefang finished speaking, the seven young men stood up one by one, though their faces looked rather grim.
After listening to Wang Jiefang's account, Director Wang turned his dark gaze toward Yi Zhonghai. "Yi Zhonghai, is what Wang Jiefang said true?"
Yi Zhonghai's expression was equally troubled. He stammered, "Director Wang, I was just thinking of those young people in the compound who don’t have jobs. After all, Wang Jiefang already has a position and often earns extra money. Isn’t it right for him to share his surplus with those in need?"
"Also, I didn’t tell them to hit Wang Jiefang; they were just too angry and wanted to take action!"
Yi Zhonghai actually didn’t throw Sha Zhu under the bus!
Hearing Yi Zhonghai's words only made Director Wang angrier. "Yi Zhonghai, that position was earned by Wang Jiefang through his own efforts. What’s wrong with him giving it to his wife? Who are you to demand he give it up for others? Huh? Who gave you that authority?
You say those young men acted on their own? Are you blind? Didn’t you know to stop them? You even have the nerve to call the police and turn things around! Yi Zhonghai, you really are something else!
If you can’t handle your responsibilities, then don’t bother doing this job!"
Liu Haizhong and Yan Bugui were initially pleased to see Yi Zhonghai being reprimanded by Director Wang. However, they realized too late that their joy was premature; Director Wang quickly turned his attention toward them: "You two! Why didn’t you stop the young people from fighting? Just standing here watching like this is how you act as the second and third elders? If you don’t want to do this anymore, just say so!"
Liu Haizhong and Yan Bugui felt incredibly frustrated; how was this their fault? They hadn’t even said a word! They felt they were being dragged down by Yi Zhonghai again!
Director Wang looked at Yi Zhonghai suspiciously: "Yi Zhonghai, did you say that Wang Jiefang even hurt Sha Zhu badly enough to go to the hospital? What’s going on?"
Yi Zhonghai suddenly realized he had said too much in his excitement. He quickly tried to backtrack: "Ah? Director Wang, that was my mistake! It was just a playful scuffle between Wang Jiefang and Sha Zhu. Sha Zhu accidentally hurt himself; he just went to the hospital for a check-up! It’s nothing serious."
Since Yi Zhonghai said it like that, Wang Jiefang had no intention of adding anything further, and Director Wang didn’t seem inclined to pursue the matter any longer.
He looked at those young men still clutching their stomachs: "I understand you want jobs; however, you should know there are only so many positions available while the number of young people needing jobs keeps increasing. If you want a job, you need to work harder instead of resorting to underhanded tactics!"
