Hearing the mention of money, Yan Jiefang immediately turned back: "If you had said so earlier, we could have settled this! Jie Cheng, Jie Kuang, come over! And bring Da You along!"
Seeing the eager expressions on their faces as they discussed money, Yi Zhonghai pointed at them, exasperated: "How have I taught you all? To be united and caring for one another, and this is how you show your unity and love?"
Yan Jiefang dismissively interrupted Yi Zhonghai: "Enough already, Yi. If you keep going on like this, we might as well forget about that one yuan and you can take the fool to the hospital yourself!"
Yi Zhonghai was momentarily speechless from Yan Jiefang's retort. After the four of them carried the fool away, he turned to Yan Bugui: "I say, old Yan, is this how you educate your children? It's simply disrespectful! This is outrageous!"
Yan Bugui glanced at Yi Zhonghai with indifference: "I say, old Yi, how I educate my children is none of your business. My experience in raising kids far exceeds yours!"
Yi Zhonghai was even more infuriated. "Oh really? So you're mocking me for not having children?"
Wang Jiefang was fully aware of the situation with the fool; he even knew that it was he who had caused the fool's leg to break! That one strike had sent a hidden force deep into the fool's bone, but it hadn't manifested until later.
That night, just as the fool was stepping over a threshold, it flared up. By the time the fool felt pain in his leg, the bone had already broken. He ended up hitting his leg against the threshold again, leading him to believe he had simply been unlucky and injured himself! He never suspected that Wang Jiefang—whom he considered blind—had secretly harmed him!
This was also Wang Jiefang's intention; it saved him from trouble if the fool broke his leg instead of confronting him directly. Even if he had killed the fool on the spot back then, it might not have caused any issues. It was better to avoid trouble altogether; he still wanted to live a peaceful life!
Yi Zhonghai turned to leave in anger after being provoked by Yan Bugui. Yan Bugui called out to him and extended his hand: "Old Yi, you promised that if you took the fool to the hospital, each of us would give a yuan. There were three of us from my family—three yuan in total. Hand it over!"
Yi Zhonghai pulled out three yuan and tossed them at Yan Bugui: "Do you think I could owe you money? Here!"
Watching Yi Zhonghai storm off in anger, Yan Bugui happily took the money and headed home!
Just as Yi Zhonghai lay down at home, there was another knock at his door!
"Who is it?" Yi Zhonghai's voice was filled with irritation.
The knocking stopped outside, and someone called out: "Old Yi! It's Song Dayou! Open up!"
Yi Zhonghai got out of bed and opened the door, asking: "Dayou, what do you need from me?"
"Well," Song Dayou hesitated before continuing, "we took the fool to the hospital. The doctor said he needs surgery and requires a yuan upfront! The fool didn’t bring any money with him; he asked me to come back and get it from you."
Yi Zhonghai frowned: "Alright, I understand. I'll go get it now."
He grabbed some money and saw that Song Dayou was still waiting at his doorstep. Confused, he asked: "Dayou, why are you still here?"
Then it dawned on him: "Oh! You want to come with me to the hospital?"
Song Dayou awkwardly replied: "No, Old Yi. You promised me a yuan; look..."
Hearing yet another request for money made Yi Zhonghai lose his temper as he pulled out a single yuan and handed it to Song Dayou!
Watching Song Dayou leave happily, Yi Zhonghai cursed, "What is wrong with the young people in this courtyard? They always want money at the drop of a hat. What happened to your spirit of unity and camaraderie?"
