On the way back, Wang Jiefang stopped by the supply and marketing cooperative to buy five pounds of candy, and then returned to the courtyard to distribute some wedding sweets to each household. He felt it was necessary to do this because, regardless of how the neighbors got along, they had lived in the same courtyard for so long. In the past, whenever there was a celebration in the courtyard, whether it was just distributing candy or hosting a banquet, the Wang family had always participated.
Now that it was his turn to get married, he felt it was only right to share some sweets as a gesture. Otherwise, it would seem like his family did not understand the customs and would be ostracized from the courtyard. Although he did not care much about what others thought of him, he still had a wife and grandmother at home who needed to interact with the neighbors.
Two days later, Wang Jiefang hosted a banquet with four tables at Juhe Building. His master and senior brothers all came, as well as Wang Ren and several leaders from the neighborhood office. After all, these people would be his future colleagues and superiors, so he felt it was important to invite them.
There were also his father-in-law and mother-in-law along with their relatives and friends. Although they were surprised that the groom was blind, they did not voice any objections, especially since neither the bride nor her father had said anything against it.
The banquet ended amidst well-wishes, and everyone except for his father-in-law and mother-in-law dispersed. At that moment, Sun Yuwei's father approached Wang Jiefang. This was their first official meeting as father-in-law and son-in-law. Wang Jiefang found it hard to believe that he had been married for days without meeting his father-in-law.
They exchanged complex glances at their new son-in-law. After drinking a bit too much, his father-in-law finally spoke up: "Son-in-law! Yuwei has told me everything about you. We are prepared for her to face hardships marrying you! I didn’t expect you to be so capable! Even without sight, you managed to find a decent job!"
"Now that we are handing Yuwei over to you, we can rest easy. Also, you might have heard some rumors; don’t believe them! They’re all nonsense! If there comes a day when you’re dissatisfied with Yuwei, don’t take it out on her. We’ve never laid a hand on her; she’s afraid of pain! Just send her back home if there’s an issue; we’ll take care of her."
Wang Jiefang noticed his father-in-law pinching his mother-in-law hard before she turned apologetically to him: "Jiefang, don’t listen to his nonsense; your father-in-law has had too much to drink. When he drinks too much, he tends to speak without thinking!"
"We can see that Yuwei has been very happy with you these past two days."
"Isn’t she doing well?" They had just seen their daughter glowing with happiness when they first met her new husband.
"Yuwei has been spoiled by us at home. If there are any disagreements in the future, just give in a little. If she does something wrong, let me know; I’ll handle it."
Wang Jiefang understood now; both his father-in-law and mother-in-law were saying the same thing—just don’t hit his wife! Did they think he was someone who would hit his wife?
"You can rest assured; I cherish such a wonderful girl like Yuwei. How could I ever hurt her?" Wang Jiefang quickly clarified.
"Good! With your words, we can relax. We should head home now; you two should go back as well."
The three of them returned to the courtyard. When Third Aunt caught a whiff of Wang Jiefang's alcohol-laden scent, she looked puzzled but couldn’t ask anything due to her still-healing tongue.
Wang Jiefang’s family hadn’t spread the word about the banquet either, so no one in the courtyard knew about the four tables set up at Juhe Building. Otherwise, who knows what kind of trouble those neighbors would stir up!
