Xu Damao was surprised that he had guessed correctly. He asked in confusion, "Wait a minute, San Dama, how could Wang Jiefang beat Shazhu when he was blind? I mean, before he went blind, he couldn't even take down Shazhu!"
San Dama was excited and replied, "Damao, you’ve asked the right person! I was there the whole time. Let me tell you, Shazhu came up and started throwing punches at Wang's boy."
San Dama animatedly recounted the events of that day.
Xu Damao listened with growing excitement. "Wait a minute, San Dama, are you saying that Shazhu got hit in the groin by Wang Jiefang and ended up in the hospital?"
"That's right! Shazhu was in so much pain that his face turned purple; he couldn't even speak!"
"Haha, that's amazing! San Dama, this news is just what I wanted to hear! Here, let me give you two more cloves of garlic!"
In his excitement, Xu Damao handed San Dama two more cloves of garlic and hummed a little tune as he headed home.
Inside the house, Wang Jiefang watched everything unfold outside with clarity. He wasn’t surprised by San Dama trying to stir things up; however, he had no intention of retaliating against her for such a trivial matter.
The more Xu Damao thought about it at home, the happier he became. He never expected that even though Wang Jiefang was blind now, he could still take down Shazhu. "I need to get closer to him! With Wang Jiefang around, I won't have to worry about that fool Shazhu anymore!"
With this thought in mind, Xu Damao rummaged through his house for some dried mushrooms and grabbed a bottle of malt milk before heading out.
"Wang brother, are you home?" Xu Damao called out at Wang Jiefang's door.
"Who is it? The door's not locked; come on in!" Wang Jiefang's grandmother was inside, busy gluing matchboxes. She heard the voice and invited him in.
"Oh, it's Damao! Are you here to see Jiefang about something?"
Seeing Xu Damao enter, Wang Jiefang's grandmother was momentarily taken aback. Although Xu Damao had a bad reputation in the neighborhood, she could see that he was just a bit lazy and overly flirtatious; otherwise, he was better than many others in the area.
"Hehe, Grandma Wang, I'm just here because I heard something happened to Jiefang. I’ve been busy with work these past few days and couldn’t come by to check on him. Today I finally had some free time after watching a movie, so I thought I’d stop by!"
"I brought some mushrooms from the countryside—absolutely authentic and delicious! You should let Wang brother and you try some. And here’s this bottle of malt milk to help him regain his strength!"
"Damao, I'm just happy that you came to see Jiefang. You can keep these things; let the malt milk be for your wife!" Wang Jiefang's grandmother quickly declined.
"Yeah, Brother Damao, take it back! We really don’t need this stuff. Just seeing you is enough to make me happy!"
Wang Jiefang chimed in as well. He truly didn’t need these items; while he might not have malt milk in his space, he had countless brands of baby formula!
But right now, he had no reason to bring them out! Thinking about it made him feel frustrated; for the past couple of days, he could only scrounge for something to eat at night!
Xu Damao didn’t believe Wang Jiefang when he said he didn’t need anything. He set down his gifts and started heading out again. "Wang brother, I've left the stuff here for you guys to eat. You know my family situation; we don’t lack these things!"
Wang Jiefang's grandmother couldn’t stop Xu Damao; she could only helplessly accept what he brought!
"Grandma, since Brother Damao has brought it over, we should accept it. I’ll cook something tonight and send it over!" Wang Jiefang understood Xu Damao’s intentions and didn’t feel any animosity towards him; at worst, he'd just help him out later!
As for the matter of reporting his father-in-law, which has left many readers feeling frustrated, Wang Jiefang thought it was not surprising that someone would act that way in such circumstances. Just think about it: at that time, Lou Xiao'e had just divorced him and was already sleeping with his arch-nemesis. Anyone in his position would go crazy!
And Xu Damao was just an ordinary film projectionist. If he wanted to take revenge on Lou Xiao'e's family, reporting them was his only option. Moreover, in that kind of environment, it was common for sons to report their fathers, students to report their teachers, and sons-in-law to report their in-laws—all for their own benefit.
Of course, Wang Jiefang's understanding of such actions did not mean he supported them.
