With Zhou Ruo's admission, the case concerning Zhong Tiantian could finally be considered closed. However, everyone at the police station knew that these recent events were likely connected to their new consultant. Faced with an unusually heavy workload, they needed a breakthrough to alleviate their anxiety.
Lin Yuan had the most communication with the technical department, and now with Qiushui on board, they had little to complain about. These matters were still being relayed by Zheng Yun to Captain Zhang. The previous sniper incident, along with the recent suicide right outside the police station, seemed to be targeted at Lin Yuan.
"Should we consider taking action? Digging out this dark force behind it all?"
Although Yuan Xiao had already provided some clues, they had arrived too late; the leads had long since vanished. Zheng Yun was also unclear about the current situation. Enemies lurking in the shadows were the most troublesome. Even though this matter wasn't her responsibility, she still felt a sense of concern.
"Are you saying you already have some ideas?"
Zheng Yun shook her head; she was from the archives, not the criminal investigation team. She just felt that if things continued this way, the district police station would struggle to contain this looming threat.
Perhaps Lin Yuan had already stirred some ripples in Jing City, but they in Haishi were striving for stability and had hardly exaggerated Lin Yuan's influence. This was also why Lin Yuan seemed no different from Officer Chang while staying here.
"I will give this matter serious consideration. According to what you said, our police station's strength does seem lacking, but Lin Yuan has provided me with a line of thought."
"Hmm?"
"You'll know when the time comes."
Although Captain Zhang was the head of the criminal investigation team, he hadn't always been stationed in this district. He had been transferred from a higher authority, while the bureau had always been here—mysterious and secretive.
Zheng Yun mumbled to herself and continued with her tasks.
Meanwhile, Zhou Ruo reappeared before her parents, now wearing handcuffs. The two of them hesitated, wanting to say something but unsure how to begin. It was clear that Zhou Ruo did not wish to speak; she ignored their gazes and walked away.
"If you notice anything unusual in the future, feel free to let me know. It might help reduce your daughter's sentence."
Zhou Ruo was now an adult and needed to take legal responsibility for her actions.
Until now, Zhou Ruo's parents finally understood that their daughter had indeed committed a crime.
Lin Yuan watched from a distance but did not approach; it was time to check in with Qiushui about how things were progressing.
It was already time to get off work when he finally emerged from the technical department.
In the past couple of days, Qiushui had been thoroughly exhausted, clearly not cut out to be someone else's teacher. He cast a resentful glance at Lin Yuan beside him.
A plate was handed over, and Lin Yuan took it. "Thank you."
"Hey, Lin Yuan, they say you really used to deliver takeout?"
"Yeah, what's up?"
"Nothing much, just wondering how someone who delivered takeout knows so much? I've been studying those computer things for years."
Qiushui raked his fingers through his hair in frustration, finally looking a bit like a teenager.
"Aren't they calling you a genius?"
"Pfft, who’s born knowing all this? I just had better parents than them and a little interest of my own."
What he didn’t realize was that these things were beyond the reach of the old Lin Yuan.
"Well, no need to dwell on that now," Lin Yuan said, shaking the plate in his hand. "Did you gain anything from today?"
"You can check for yourself later; I don’t think it was very helpful," Qiushui replied.
By this time, the two had already exited the police station. Lin Yuan had come to see Qiushui off and would return after dropping him off.
"The firewall at the station hasn’t had any issues lately; I’ll keep an eye on that email. Once everything’s settled, remember to come visit me in Jing City when you have time."
"Thanks."
Watching Qiushui gradually walk away, Lin Yuan pondered that it was about time to finalize the house he had been eyeing.
The next morning, Lin Yuan arrived ready to help Meng Ruochu report her missing person case, but to his surprise, someone had already filed it.
As soon as he saw Lin Yuan, Zhang Xiao rushed over. "Hello! They said you’re the officer who called me, right?"
"I’m a friend of Meng Ruochu's. Here’s my ID; I already registered over there. Have you found her yet?"
It was only seven in the morning, indicating she must have come in very early.
"Don’t be so anxious; come have some water first." Lin Yuan led her to sit down.
"I’ve already contacted those classmates who were supposed to throw a party yesterday; they said they don’t know where Meng Ruochu is. Given the current situation, finding her will be difficult."
She used to never stay out for this long; they must be lying!
Zhang Xiao was angry. "When I arrived this morning, I called them, but not one of them answered. If they weren't guilty, why wouldn't they pick up the phone?"
"Are they still at school?"
"Yes."
Since these individuals didn't live in Haishi, even during holidays, they usually stayed here to hang out rather than going home. According to Zhang Xiao, Li Muze had some signs of being a scumbag. She actually didn't like him much and thought he was a bit pretentious.
"Let's talk about the gathering time."
They expected everyone to arrive around three in the afternoon, and they probably had a bit to drink by then.
Lin Yuan nodded, hesitated for a moment, then spoke up. "Is there anywhere in that neighborhood where things can be easily hidden?"
"Hiding things?" Zhang Xiao was taken aback. "Our neighborhood is an old one, but I heard it's undergoing renovations recently; they’re installing surveillance cameras and fixing the drainage system."
Lin Yuan quickly caught on to the key point in her words. "You mentioned drainage?"
"Yes, because of issues with the ground drainage system, our neighborhood tends to flood when it rains, and it takes a long time for the water to drain out. There's a ditch right below our building."
"Have they been working on it these past few days?" Lin Yuan immediately asked.
"Well, it seems like they were missing some pipes, so they're working on the other side of the neighborhood for now. Our side is on hold until this afternoon."
A thought struck Lin Yuan's mind: there were quite a few people involved; transporting Meng Ruochu would be more than manageable. If the drainage work continued during this time, any evidence could easily be washed away down the sewer, making it difficult to find anyone later on.
Lin Yuan quickly stood up and urged Zhang Xiao to follow him.
