Sitting across from him, the two police officers were clearly troubled, their brows furrowed as they tapped their pens against the table.
"Lin Yuanhu, there’s no way she would trouble you for no reason. What kind of relationship do you two have? Be clear about it," one officer pressed. "And why was Yuan Xiao in your room? You must know something about that, right?"
Faced with the officers' relentless questioning, Lin Yuanhu's impatience grew. "How would I know why she was in my room? Maybe she just saw that I have money. You should know I have a company under my name, and it’s about to go public, right? People like us have gold diggers flocking to us every day."
His tone dripped with disdain as he spoke. Seeing his attitude, one of the officers interjected, "Do you think we’re unaware of your affairs? We haven’t even started talking about Wang Zhiyan yet. If this keeps up, you might as well wait for your lawyer to arrive!"
A brief detention wouldn’t significantly impact an individual. However, the effect on the company’s stock price could be substantial.
Lin Yuanhu's expression darkened; he realized he couldn’t hide the truth any longer. "Fine, I can say I know something, but I assure you that’s all I know—everything else has nothing to do with me."
The officers gestured for him to continue.
Meanwhile, Yuan Xiao looked up and spotted Lin Yuan. She spoke without much emotion, "You’re not really his friend."
Lin Yuan replied, "That was just an excuse to get close to you. We found your fingerprints on the toilet seat in the restroom; perhaps you didn’t notice you left them behind."
"And this," he added.
On the table lay a small pile of powder sealed in a plastic evidence bag. Others might not recognize it, but Yuan Xiao did.
"Why did you throw it in the trash? Did you really think you wouldn’t get caught?" she asked sharply. "This powder can cause someone to lose consciousness if inhaled in sufficient quantities; it was discovered during the examination of a body."
Seeing the familiar substance made Yuan Xiao's voice hoarse. "When I decided to take action against those demons, I had already thought of this outcome. In fact, there are many more flaws in my story; if you search the hotels I've stayed at, you'll uncover a lot."
"Don’t worry; someone has already searched them," one officer replied.
Regardless of how this ended, this girl who had worked hard to enter university would ultimately see her future ruined.
Lin Yuan sighed after saying all this. He knew that reopening the case would be difficult, but that was not a reason for murder.
"You know Wang Zhiyan isn't his biological son, and you learned from him who his real parents are, right? But you didn't expect Wang Zhiyan to be gone so soon; you can't believe it."
Based on those days, that young master Xia's illegitimate child probably didn't notice you. Otherwise, you wouldn't be standing here now.
"Why didn't you report it to the police back then? The clues could have prevented the Wang Zhiyan case from dragging on for so long."
Sitting in the chair, Yuan Xiao looked at Lin Yuan as if she were seeing someone else through him.
"Officer, how old are you? If Wang Zhiyan hadn't died, he wouldn't be much younger than you, right?"
"Do you know? If I had reported it to the police back then, what awaited me wouldn’t have been any vindication but rather someone being framed."
The girl's gaze was lifeless.
"They will never let themselves become that sacrifice; it will always be someone else."
"Can you guarantee that even now, those involved will receive the punishment they deserve?"
Lin Yuan remained silent for a few seconds before replying, "I can. The law is just."
"Hahaha, Officer! But it comes too late!"
Even her laughter seemed forced; Yuan Xiao looked as if she were crying.
"I'm not a formidable criminal, so I know I have many shortcomings. Fortunately, aside from the ones who truly deserved to be handed over to you, I've dealt with everything else I wanted to handle."
She smiled. "He’s almost sixty this year. If he hired someone to kill his own son, he should get a longer sentence, right?"
She glanced at the camera's position with uncertainty in her eyes. "You understand much more than this officer does; I’m not wrong about that, right? Although I wanted to study law, unfortunately, I lack the talent."
"It doesn't matter; I've gained what I needed. Everything else is irrelevant."
Lin Yuan and the officer beside him were momentarily at a loss for words. Yuan Xiao had admitted to her crime; the case wouldn’t pose much difficulty moving forward.
"At this point, have you really not thought about your parents? They are still waiting for you at home."
The officer beside Lin Yuan couldn't help but speak up.
Despite nearly killing a third person, there was something tragic about this girl.
Yuan Xiao slowly rolled up her sleeves. What was supposed to be flawless skin bore hundreds of cigarette burns and whip marks; those scars were located just below her shoulders.
Amidst the astonished gazes, Yuan Xiao said:
"If the officer wants to see the evidence, he can look at my back. So, I don’t need them to wait for me."
Outside the monitoring room, Zheng Yun watched Yuan Xiao with deep concern. How could parents be so cruel? This was their own daughter. Moreover, judging by her condition, these injuries had been inflicted not long ago.
"Investigate Yuan Xiao's parents and notify them to come in tomorrow morning," he instructed. There was still much work to be done tonight, so they could only delay some matters.
Gradually, the sympathy in Lin Yuan's eyes faded. It was time to ask about the details of the case; the recording continued to play.
"The news about that gathering can be found online, but how did you get in? Who gave you that invitation?"
Yuan Xiao shook her head. "He helped me out, but I won't disclose anything about him." She had burned his business card at the time; she didn’t want to cause trouble for anyone else.
"The other party knows about your dispute with the victim. It's possible they might harm others as well. Are you really not going to say anything?" The officer sounded a bit anxious. They were aware that there was a hidden force behind this case, and perhaps this information could lead to progress in their investigation.
But Yuan Xiao shook her head again; she wouldn’t betray anyone.
Lin Yuan pressed on, his expression turning serious, his tone more urgent than before. "Yuan Xiao, the person you were in contact with is likely involved in illegal drug transactions. The amount is significant, and we have already apprehended four individuals related to this network."
"This trafficking ring is a cancer in our society, trampling on national boundaries and completely disregarding the law. Are you sure you won’t say anything?"
"Illegal transactions?" Yuan Xiao was taken aback. She understood what Lin Yuan was implying but still asked, "Officer, are you saying... drugs?"
Lin Yuan nodded gravely.
In that moment, a flicker of determination shone in Yuan Xiao's previously vacant eyes. "Officer, I remember his name and phone number. Please write it down."
