With all the groundwork laid out, even if Lin Yuan didn't say anything, Wang Yao was ready to speak up. However, upon seeing Zheng Yun standing there, he figured the young lady probably knew enough about the situation, so he said:
"Zheng, why don't you give us a brief overview? This case is from your district after all."
Zheng Yun had no reason to refuse. The conference room was equipped with a projector, and she happened to have the electronic files of the case on her phone.
This case wasn't new; Lin Yuan stroked his chin as he listened. The incident took place in an undeveloped old city area, where a few stubborn residents still remained. The victim was the son of one such resident.
Wang Zhiyan, an eighteen-year-old student preparing for college entrance exams. His grades were among the top ten in his class, and both the principal and teachers paid special attention to this impoverished student. However, living far from school meant he spent one to two hours commuting each day.
Tragically, just a month before the exams, his body was discovered in a filthy drainage ditch in the old city area. It was euphemistically called a drainage ditch, but in reality, it was more like a cesspool.
Wang Zhiyan's father had lost his ability to work, while his mother took on low-paying jobs, hoping their son would succeed and change their fate. The shocking news of his death overwhelmed them; they went straight to the police station in distress.
They claimed that there were dark forces at play from a certain construction company that wanted to silence them and demanded an explanation. How could this construction company know who the stubborn residents were if they didn't have inside information?
In response to Wang Yao's inquiry, Zhang Yao nodded. Such matters often involved discreet inquiries; it could be someone from the company or local officials. The neighborhood committee claimed they had no connection to the incident.
The old city area lacked surveillance cameras, and without recordings, those statements couldn't serve as evidence.
"What happened next?" Zheng Yun continued.
Due to insufficient evidence, the police merely conducted brief inquiries before letting those individuals go. Subsequently, demolition activities indeed took place. However, Wang Zhiyan's parents remained steadfast and refused to back down.
In the face of bustling prosperity, their power felt utterly insignificant. This was the sea; if it were a different city, the other party wouldn't be so at ease. Those present were not strangers to storms and tempests—well, except for Lin Yuan, who had some understanding of these matters.
From this perspective, it seemed highly likely that the construction companies were involved. A high-achieving student like Wang Zhiyan would never have fallen into this situation on his own in the dead of night, right? If that were the case, wouldn’t the school be filled with fools?
At that moment, Lin Yuan spoke up, posing a question that wasn’t crucial but still significant. Given that this issue had gone unresolved for such a long time, why was there a need to start an investigation now? Cases like this, which couldn’t be resolved immediately, weren’t simply ignored by the police; they just lacked sufficient evidence.
Generally speaking, without more critical information, a re-investigation wouldn’t commence.
Zheng Yun replied, “That’s because a body was discovered yesterday. The location of the corpse was right beneath the building of the construction company responsible for the redevelopment—specifically in the restroom. Moreover, despite rapid modernization, some areas still lag behind. That restroom was no different from those in the old city.”
“And the identity?” Lin Yuan inquired.
“The deceased was the manager responsible for Wang Zhiyan’s area. He was among the first to advise Wang Zhiyan to relocate. The price he offered back then was quite unreasonable, but later it inexplicably doubled. Such discrepancies have been noted by the police but still cannot be considered crucial evidence.”
Lin Yuan understood. By now, things were becoming quite clear: extreme measures had likely been taken to drive away these stubborn residents during the demolition process, with the perpetrators believing that once it was over, everything would be settled. Little did they expect that after such a long time, there would still be repercussions.
What the police needed to do now was to thoroughly investigate Wang Zhiyan's case and at least provide an answer to the public. This way, perhaps those who killed the manager would cease their actions, and they could quickly identify them.
To many, delayed justice wasn’t justice at all. Captain Zhang knew that Wang Zhiyan's case wouldn’t end so easily. There was a strong possibility that seeing the police gradually overlook safety inspections made someone feel emboldened enough to commit a crime. It seemed they held onto a mindset that if the police wouldn’t handle it, then they would take matters into their own hands.
Lin Yuan could understand this mindset, but understanding was one thing, and the law was another.
It was like the platform often deducted his earnings, many of which were not even considered by the platform itself, leaving the burden on the riders.
Were they angry? Of course, but that wasn’t enough to make them directly attack the platform.
"Consultant Xiao Lin, are you implying that we in the police department are at fault?" Zhang Yao squinted his eyes.
"Is there? I don’t think so," Lin Yuan replied, refusing to acknowledge it.
The police department hadn’t done anything wrong in this matter; they simply hadn’t found any evidence. Many situations didn’t necessarily have a clear resolution in the end.
Now, they were facing more than one problem.
After some light banter, it was time for serious discussion. As his voice rose, everyone else focused their attention.
Lin Yuan’s thought process was quick; he started analyzing from a broad perspective and would elaborate on specific issues as they arose.
First, they needed to identify the murderer of Wang Zhiyan; otherwise, the current killer wouldn’t rest easily.
Second, they should examine the corpse to see if there were any similarities in the manner of Wang Zhiyan's death and also look into those close to him.
Third, they needed to find all those who had made decisions at that time; if retaliation was indeed a possibility, this wouldn’t be the last incident.
The slower they acted, the faster their opponent would strike.
There were no sewage pits nearby, so the restroom served as a substitute; the state of death would likely not be pretty, but fortunately, the body should still be intact for now.
There was more than one person responsible at that time, and not all of them were currently at sea. If others were absent, could their opponent cross provincial lines directly?
Zhang Yao clearly thought of an excellent point.
What if he wasn’t present?
The opponent’s hatred wouldn’t wait that long; he had already waited too long before this moment.
Lin Yuan’s words sent shivers down everyone’s spine.
"If he isn’t here, his family is still around."
