What does this mean?
Perhaps that guy wanted to see us both suffer and then reap the benefits! When he realized we weren’t fighting, he had no choice but to forcibly summon the Stone Locusts to surround us. If it weren't for Fu Zhong carrying the Thunder Fire Talismans, we wouldn’t have escaped so easily.
Fu Zhong, upon being mentioned, puffed out his chest proudly.
Lu Mingyuan, however, was even more confused. We have no grievances or enmities; who would go to such lengths to scheme against us? Maybe they hold a grudge against the sect, or perhaps they simply want to kill and seize treasures.
Qi Xiao turned to Lu Mingyuan and said, “Brother Lu, you have more experience than us. You must have encountered situations like this before, right?”
Lu Mingyuan fell silent. Indeed, when he took off his Xiaoyao Sect disciple robes for training, he had encountered many with ill intentions. But this time, they were on an expedition led by a well-known major sect in the cultivation world. Who would be so blind as to scheme against two of them at once?
They must either be bold, foolish, or intent on killing to silence us, wanting to bury this matter without a trace.
“Brother, you’re overlooking another possibility,” Qi Xiao continued. “Perhaps some people just want to fish in troubled waters.”
Regardless of their intentions, if they want to scheme against us, they must pay a price.
A pockmarked-faced man hurriedly exited one of the corridors. He was afraid someone might be chasing him; he ran so fast that he almost tripped and was steadied by a burly man.
“Old Three, how did the task I entrusted you go?”
The pockmarked-faced man trembled all over and stammered without being able to speak.
The burly man glared at him and grabbed him by the collar, questioning him angrily, “You messed up such a small task? You really are useless!”
With that, he tossed the pockmarked-faced man aside, who fell hard onto his backside.
Feeling somewhat wronged, he said, “I led them there; who knew they would just stop fighting while talking? When encountering something good, both sides want it—wasn’t it supposed to be resolved through strength?”
Suddenly turning from conflict to peace, these sect disciples really didn’t know if they were too foolish or too kind-hearted.
“Didn’t that old man prepare a backup plan for you?”
When they discovered the Blood Linglong, they thought they had stumbled upon an opportunity. However, once they saw the insect eggs inside the fruit, they lost hope. The Blood Linglong that had been infested was already useless.
The three of them, unwilling to accept defeat, devised another plan using the Blood Linglong method. Qian, who had some beast-taming secret techniques, pulled out a bone whistle before Ma Zilian set off and handed it to him. As long as Ma Zilian infused the whistle with his essence blood, he could forcibly establish a connection with the Stone Locust larvae, prompting them to break free. At that point, they would launch a two-pronged attack, and the group of disciples from the sect, who had no combat experience, would surely be caught off guard. If they were touched by the Stone Locusts, they would either die or be severely injured.
But who would have thought that even when the Stone Locusts arrived, that group of sect disciples managed to escape? They had Thunderfire Talismans! Who uses talismans one at a time? Good grief! When they scattered them around, one might think they were just tossing away scraps of paper! Ma Zilian was utterly defeated. The first failure was due to the stupidity of those sect disciples; the second was purely because those people were too wealthy.
Hearing this, the burly man gritted his teeth in jealousy, his eyes bloodshot. "Well, I really underestimated these little brats!" Beside him, Qian coughed lightly. "Big Brother, don’t be upset. We will find an opportunity. If all else fails, we can try someone else."
However, before the three could finish their conversation, a barrage of Thunderfire rained down upon them. They screamed in horror; after dodging the Thunderfire came a storm of sword rain, followed by a flurry of various spells. The overwhelming attacks didn’t claim their lives but came close enough.
"Spare us, young heroes! Let’s talk this out!" Qi Xiao squinted and sneered as the sword light in his hand transformed from one beam into dozens, hovering in mid-air aimed at the three of them. "No need for that. You’ve already said enough. Honestly, you lying on the ground is much more pleasing to the eye than your chatter."
Thus, the three watched helplessly as those dozens of sword lights split again into hundreds and descended upon them.
Lu Mingyuan kicked at the man on the ground who had fainted from fear and looked at Qi Xiao with hesitation. "Junior Brother Qi, isn’t this a bit too ruthless?" After they expressed their intention to search for someone, a disciple from Miaochun Valley volunteered to use jade bees to look for traces of people nearby.
The jade bee flew around unsteadily and indeed found where Ma Zilian had left. They held their breath and quietly followed until they saw Ma Zilian running here in a panic and uttering some words. After hearing this, all the disciples could no longer hold back and planned to take action but were stopped by Qi Xiao.
"These rogue cultivators have many tricks up their sleeves; it’s better to be cautious when dealing with them." He then instructed the Miaochun Valley disciples to contribute some hallucinogenic drugs and had Mu Ziyuan set up an illusion array around them.
As the two forces converged, the three individuals were caught completely off guard, left to passively endure the onslaught. They were so deeply entrenched in the illusion that they failed to realize they were unable to muster any strength. Even Qi Xiao's movements and words were automatically interpreted by them as reality.
If he could truly achieve such a level of mastery, he would not merely be a lowly Foundation Establishment disciple. Qi Xiao sheathed his sword, his expression calm; it was merely a small lesson for them. Just scaring them was already a favor.
However, there was one flaw in his plan: the pockmarked face unexpectedly regained clarity amidst the illusion. In the end, he even threw a handful of powder and fled, leaving his two older brothers behind, utterly oblivious.
Qi Xiao glanced at the two unconscious figures on the ground and frowned slightly. Although he had punished them, with them still in a stupor, how could he ask them anything?
"Zhao Shimei, could you please fetch some water?"
Pah! Their cunning was more insidious than a sesame seed. The pockmarked face was timid and cowardly, yet also quite clever. Upon sensing something was off around him, he suspected he had fallen into an illusion and discreetly bit his tongue to wake himself up.
Though he had escaped, his two older brothers remained behind. Without them, he didn’t know where to go. Even if his older brother looked down on him, they were both Golden Core experts. Sticking with them meant at least having some soup to drink; if he left them, he would truly be no different from a rat in a dark alley.
Could he return? No, that would be seeking death. But if he left...
As the pockmarked face hesitated, he suddenly heard footsteps approaching. His heart tightened as he cautiously peered through the branches and leaves, catching sight of the disciples of the Xiaoyao Sect.
He slipped and quickly ran in another direction, but before he could get far, an icy sword like the moon blocked his path.
"Why are you running upon seeing us?"
