"Quick! Someone help!" Wen Tian's face turned pale in an instant, an unprecedented fear surging through her.
On the shore, Yuan'er finally realized the gravity of the situation upon seeing Wen Tian, her legs turning to jelly. It was Yu Huan who reacted first, swiftly jumping into the lake to rescue Tang Zhiyun. The surface of the lake began to ripple outward from a single point, as if it had waited a century for this moment. Soon, Yu Huan managed to pull Tang Zhiyun up from the water, both of them breaking through the surface.
Wen Tian struggled to maintain her balance; her face was as white as Tang Zhiyun's, who had fainted from drowning.
She forced herself to stay calm and immediately began administering first aid. Yu Huan, Yuan'er, and the others who had rushed over upon hearing the cries stood by in a daze, watching in shock as they had never witnessed such a rescue before.
With artificial respiration and chest compressions, she repeated the process until her eyes reddened with despair, nearly ready to give up. Just then, Tang Zhiyun arched her body and began to cough violently, expelling a significant amount of the lake water she had swallowed.
"Quick! Call for the Imperial Physician!" Wen Tian's eyes brimmed with tears of joy. She quickly directed others to take action. "You all carry him back to his room and change him into dry clothes. Take good care of him. Also, have the kitchen prepare some ginger soup and send it over immediately. As for you..."
She turned her gaze toward Yuan'er, who was preparing to flee. "You have acted recklessly and without regard for authority. I have turned a blind eye to your behavior in the past, but who would have thought you would become even more outrageous? This time you dared to endanger another's life with such malice. If you are not severely punished, how will anyone in this palace learn their lesson?"
Upon hearing this, Yuan'er, already drenched in cold sweat from fear, immediately knelt down, gripping Wen Tian's clothing tightly with tear-filled eyes as she pleaded for mercy. "Your Majesty, I promise I won't do it again. Please forgive me this time for the sake of my past service."
Wen Tian coldly pulled her clothes away and scoffed, "I will give you one more chance; however, while death may be avoided, punishment cannot be escaped. You will receive twenty lashes and be expelled from the palace."
"No! Your Majesty, I don't want to leave the palace! This has nothing to do with me! I didn't push him that hard; he fell on his own! It’s not my fault! I don’t want to go!" Yuan'er's eyes widened in terror and defiance.
No matter how much resentment or unwillingness she felt inside, she could only be dragged away mercilessly by the guards. " Tang Zhiyun! You wretched girl! You’re framing me! Come out here so we can confront each other!"
Wen Tian merely watched coldly until Yuan'er's figure disappeared from view; her dark eyes revealed no emotion at all.
Seeing the situation unfold, Yu Huan broke into a cold sweat. Was Tang Zhiyun truly pushed into the water, or did he jump in willingly? He had seen it all clearly. He couldn't believe that the Emperor would be unaware of Yuan'er's innocence. Or was it... that she did it on purpose?
Relying on his youth, Tang Zhiyun quickly regained consciousness. During his unconsciousness, he had been mumbling in a voice that fluctuated between high and low. Wen Tian leaned in to listen, but much of what he said was unclear; all she could make out was that he repeatedly called out for someone.
When he finally woke up, only half an hour had passed. He was surprised to see Wen Tian, her eyes red from worry, watching over him.
"You’re awake. Would you like some water? Your throat might be a bit uncomfortable. If you have anything to say, we can wait a moment," she asked. Though her tone was inquiring, she had already brought the cup to his lips. Her expression was somewhat stiff, but the concern in her eyes was genuine.
Everything felt calm, as if they had never been at odds before.
Tang Zhiyun found himself at a loss, dazed as he allowed her to help him sit up and feed him water. He couldn’t help but notice how unusually gentle she appeared in this quiet moment, causing his gaze to follow her every movement.
