No wonder, when she introduced the members of the Mingguang Team to Tang Zhengsu, his expression was so peculiar.
Wang Jin sighed softly, "Yao Beiluo from our generation is quite a remarkable figure. It's a pity he has such an outstanding older brother; he has essentially lived in his shadow since childhood. I bet he's feeling a mix of emotions right now."
"Spare me your schadenfreude!" Lin Yao shot him a glare. "I heard that most military families have members in the expeditionary forces. I wonder if your Wang family is one of them?"
Wang Jin immediately froze.
Since Lin Yao had previously arranged with Tang Zhengsu to bring the Mingguang Team to express their gratitude, they were taken to the special operations team's conference room, which was packed with people.
Before they could even begin to thank anyone, someone stood up excitedly and asked, "Who among you is from the Wang family?"
Wang Jin stood up in surprise. "I—I am!"
"What's your relation to Wang Tianlong?"
"He's my cousin!"
Although Wang Jin was currently the only heir of the Wang family, he hadn't always been the sole descendant. He had several older cousins who were significantly older than him.
The Wang family was known for its high attack capabilities in lightning abilities, on par with the general's family, the Yao family, and was referred to as the 'Gun of Yunmeng.'
Behind this fame lay countless sacrifices, much like those endured by the Yao family.
Few remained from Wang Jin's generation; in fact, he was the last one left alive. Even though high-level ability users had long lifespans and extended reproductive years, the higher one's abilities, the more difficult it became to conceive.
By the time Wang Jin emerged, most of his generation had perished. If it weren't for a few remaining from his older generation still of childbearing age, it seemed that the Wang family would have faced extinction.
Given those previous sacrifices, it was inevitable that the elders indulged him a bit too much, leading to his fearless personality.
He had heard that Yao Zhengqi was still alive and thought that perhaps his cousin Wang Tianlong might also be alive when Lin Yao asked about whether anyone from the Wang family was in the special operations team.
But at that moment, standing before these members of the special operations team, his heart sank.
As soon as Wang Jin finished speaking, all members of the special operations team suddenly knelt down, including Yao Zhengqi.
"What are you doing?" he exclaimed.
"This kneel is out of respect for your family," one of them replied. "Your cousin sacrificed himself to protect us."
Compared to the Mingguang Squad, which had the protection of a life-saving space, the Special Operations Team faced true peril upon arriving at Black Porcelain Star. They were besieged by the Eastern Army and, with no way out, could only retreat into the Chaos Nebula.
Within the Chaos Nebula, larger objects suffered greater damage. The starship, being so massive, was soon battered by various high-speed currents and debris swirling within the nebula. Additionally, due to the powerful magnetic forces at play, they were rendered unable to maneuver and could only drift helplessly.
The starship of the Special Operations Team was not only manned by elite soldiers but also housed top talents from various fields. If the starship could be protected, some members of the team might survive; however, it would be nearly impossible for those elite individuals to endure.
Thus, the leader of the Special Operations Team, Yao Zhengqi, instructed other ability users to take turns maintaining a protective shield around the starship's hull while those with metal abilities handled external repairs. Once the outer layer of the starship was repaired, they would allow others to rest. This alternating cycle allowed them to preserve the starship as much as possible in the early stages.
As they drew closer to Black Porcelain Star, the various nebulae grew more powerful and their currents swifter. Soon enough, their fragile balance was shattered. Many high-level ability users had to expend excessive energy, damaging their foundations; some suffered mental breakdowns due to untreated issues and perished as a result.
During that time, deaths occurred daily, and despair enveloped the atmosphere aboard the starship. However, they were not entirely unlucky; their entry point into the Chaos Nebula was relatively close to Black Porcelain Star. After spending two weeks in the nebula, they finally caught sight of their destination.
By then, only a third of the original members of the Special Operations Team remained alive. Even Yao Zhengqi himself was on the brink of a mental collapse and could barely maintain command. The starship was in tatters and seemed on the verge of disintegration.
At that moment, Wang Tianlong, a high-level lightning ability user, stepped forward. Clad in his mech armor and piloting a battlecraft, he exhausted his life force to propel the starship towards Black Porcelain Star with his lightning abilities.
As the Special Operations Team recounted Wang Tianlong's actions, all eyes from Mingguang Squad turned toward Lin Yao. They all recognized the greatness in sacrificing oneself to help teammates survive.
Fortunately for them, their captain had not died; he had survived. Despite his deep sorrow, Wang Jin held back tears as he helped Yao Zhengqi and others to their feet. "This is not your fault; it was my cousin's choice," he said. "My uncle also said that once we donned that military uniform, we took on that responsibility. Even if it means death, we must bear what we are meant to bear!"
You don't need to feel guilty. You are all doing what you are supposed to do, and my brother is doing what he needs to do as well. His sacrifice allowed you to survive, and you should honor that by living fully in his stead.
Due to Wang Tianlong's situation, the atmosphere in the Special Forces' base was somewhat gloomy. However, with the addition of a few young and energetic individuals, the previous sense of despair had lessened a bit.
Even Yao Zhengqi, who had been as cold as ice, showed a slight thaw after talking with his younger brother, Yao Beiluo. The frosty expression on his face softened somewhat.
Yao Beiluo, on the other hand, couldn't hide his joy and seemed more relaxed than before.
For the past twenty years, we haven't been idle. The combat personnel have been responsible for gathering food and materials from outside while ensuring safety and logistics. Other team members have come together not only to repair damaged warships but also to research technologies that could break through the gravity of Black Porcelain Star and enable starships to navigate through the Chaotic Nebula.
Currently, we have made some progress in developing technology to overcome the gravity of Black Porcelain Star; we just need a few more materials. However, we are still quite far from achieving the technology necessary for starships to operate in the Chaotic Nebula.
Having experienced the technology of the Galactic Alliance, if you could share with us what advancements you encountered out there, it might inspire us in our own efforts.
Speaking of the Galactic Alliance's technology reminded Lin Yao of Academician Zheng. She wondered if he had safely returned to the Yunmeng Galaxy. She had given him some technical insights; she hoped that the people of Yunmeng Galaxy could fully grasp them and establish a jump point.
While Lin Yao didn't have many thoughts on this matter herself, she certainly had no shortage of technology.
