As they walked along honestly for a while, suddenly a young boy fell to the ground with a thud. The mercenary instinctively aimed his gun at him, wondering what was happening.
The boy clutched his chest, gasping for breath like a bellows. Someone beside him said, "He has asthma. The wind and sand here are so strong that it must have triggered his attack. Please help him; he has medicine in his space pouch that can control it!"
This sudden situation left the mercenary unsure of what to do, and he instinctively looked toward his leader for guidance.
At that moment, the boy seeking help and the one having an asthma attack acted simultaneously. One lunged for the mercenary's energy gun while the other elbowed the mercenary's arm, causing him to wince in pain and release the weapon.
The boy who grabbed the energy gun immediately stood beside the one suffering from asthma. One of them unleashed golden threads that tightly bound the mercenary, loudly threatening the leader. "Let us go now, or don’t blame us if we kill him!"
After threatening the mercenary leader, the boy turned to the others and said, "You all aren’t going to resist? Are you just waiting to be locked up and sold off like cattle?"
The rapid turn of events startled the inexperienced group of boys momentarily, but they were quickly pointed at by the energy gun and had no chance to fight back from start to finish.
Seeing this, the two boys exchanged worried glances. At that moment, the mercenary leader sneered, "He's just a mercenary; why do you think he can threaten me?"
The two boys remained silent, their faces betraying their attempts to hide their panic. "Then I’ll shoot!" The mercenary took advantage of their hesitation, taunting them further. "If you have the guts, go ahead and shoot! Let’s see if I flinch!"
"I... I..." one of the boys stammered, but his finger never pulled the trigger.
In their moment of hesitation, another mercenary charged in from the side and shot a fireball at the boy holding the gun. The boy yelped as he was burned and instinctively dropped the energy weapon.
With that loss of threat, the mercenary leader and another mercenary rushed forward and knocked both boys to the ground. This time their strikes were even more ruthless than before; those standing far away could hear bones cracking.
When they finally stopped, both boys were left battered and unrecognizable. The mercenary leader spat on one of them and stomped hard on his head, crushing it into an unrecognizable shape as he nearly slipped into unconsciousness.
"Resistance? Threats? Weren't you quite capable?" After saying this, he turned to address the remaining people. "You all remember this: this isn’t your ivory tower; no one will coddle you here. If you want to live, just behave and listen!"
The group of tasks fell silent, like a flock of frightened birds. After the hasty failure of their rebellion, it was clear that they would not dare to make any moves for quite some time.
Having achieved the purpose of setting an example, the mercenary leader casually picked a few from the youths and said, "You lot, help those two on the ground up and give them a beating!"
Then the mercenaries continued to herd this group like sheep, pushing them onward.
Mazi, disregarding the mercenaries' watchful eyes, leaned closer to Lin Yao. "You seem a bit strange."
Lin Yao glanced at him. "What do you mean strange?"
"You’re too calm."
"How so?" She had just shown a face full of fear, hadn't she?
The mercenaries were so brutal that everyone else was terrified. Only you, while your expression seemed fearful, your eyes were calm and your hands and feet didn’t tremble at all," the boy insisted.
Lin Yao felt speechless. Out of so many people, he was probably the only one paying such close attention to her.
"Clearly not afraid but pretending to be. You’re not an undercover agent, are you?" Mazi asked curiously.
Lin Yao shot him a glare. "I’m not."
"Impossible. If you weren’t undercover, you wouldn’t be this calm."
"Maybe I’m just naturally emotionally stable, or perhaps I have something to rely on, just like you."
As they walked further in, they continued their quiet conversation, with Mazi doing most of the talking.
They finally stopped at a desolate hillside. The leading mercenary clapped his hands, and suddenly the hillside opened up like the mouth of a beast, revealing a deep black cave.
Seeing the entrance, the young taskers took a few steps back in fright.
The mercenary who had been trailing behind them was not lenient. He coldly said, "What’s wrong? We’ve come this far; do you want me to force you in?"
Mazi leaned closer to Lin Yao and whispered, "Do we really have to go in? Once we do, I won’t be able to perform well."
"Do you think you have a choice right now?"
The boy looked up at the tasks already starting to enter and the mercenaries watching them closely from behind. He could only shrug helplessly.
"Brother, I’ll be counting on you later!"
"Why bother with me? You should look at that boy over there to the left!"
The Straw-Haired Boy followed Lin Yao's gaze and saw a seemingly innocent-looking youth walking in, casually tossing something onto the ground.
He nearly gasped in surprise, but Lin Yao quickly pulled him back. "We need to hurry; they'll be after us soon."
Once they entered the cave, they were each fitted with a power suppression ring and then shoved into a dark room.
After stepping inside, Lin Yao noticed there were quite a few people already locked up—at least a dozen, most of them teenagers in their late teens to early twenties.
The Straw-Haired Boy stayed close to her and, upon seeing the scene, couldn't help but exclaim, "I can't believe so many people fell for such a simple trick!"
His voice wasn't particularly quiet, and in such a spacious area, it echoed loudly and was somewhat grating. If it weren't for the dim lighting obscuring their vision, Lin Yao felt like he would be pierced by the stares of others.
Under the intense scrutiny, Lin Yao pulled him aside and pressed him against the wall.
Seeing her stop moving, the Straw-Haired Boy curiously asked, "Are we just going to wait here? Aren't we going to try to save ourselves?"
"Save ourselves? The space rings have been taken away, our powers are suppressed, and our physical skills are lacking. What can we do? It's better to just wait for someone to rescue us," Lin Yao replied as she crossed her arms against the wall and closed her eyes to rest.
But the Straw-Haired Boy couldn't stand the boredom. "Isn't that just too dull?"
"What else do you suggest? Do you have any other entertainment?"
"Actually, I do!" The Straw-Haired Boy said as he rummaged through his hair.
He pulled out a tiny spider-like creature and tossed it onto the ground. They watched as it quickly vanished into the darkness.
