The meat of exotic beasts can indeed provide a certain amount of energy to the human body, and long-term consumption can improve one's physical condition to some extent. In fact, after an exotic beast dies, most of its energy dissipates, and during the cooking process, there can be additional losses due to varying levels of skill. The remaining energy cannot all be absorbed by the human body. If one consumes beasts that are beyond their level, even more energy is wasted.
For instance, the energy provided by the fragrant pig that could elevate a peak Level Three martial artist to Level Four would likely require consuming at least seven or eight Level Three beasts to achieve that effect. I don't think my cooking skills are that impressive; it must be due to the ingredients, Zhang Feng quickly denied.
Ingredients? Could it be that fragrant pig was mutated? Meng Xingchen speculated.
Seeing that it was getting late, Lin Yao hurriedly interrupted their idle chatter. "It's late; we should rest. Tonight's night watch is the same as usual." The night watch was from ten in the evening until dawn the next day. Meng Xingchen had the weakest combat ability, so he took the first shift; Zhang Feng would cook in the morning and took the last shift; Lin Yao was responsible for the most awkward time slot in between.
"Boss, I leveled up today; let me take the middle shift."
"You’re a girl; it's not fair to always make you take the hardest time slot," he replied.
Lin Yao directly tapped his head. "If you know it's not fair, then hurry up and improve your combat skills!"
With Meng Xingchen's martial arts improved, their travel speed also increased. By the afternoon of the ninth day of their exam, they caught up with a large group at the front and not only caught up but also saw a crowd gathered.
Meng Xingchen was the first to run over and gather information. "Boss, I've found out what's going on."
He gasped for breath, excitement barely contained in his voice. "A Level Five giant python has appeared at Blue Belt River, blocking the only path forward. Taking a detour would take at least five days, so these people have been stuck here for three days at most."
He said slyly, "I also heard that the first team to cross the river almost got eaten if they hadn't pressed the distress button quickly enough. Someone saw it with their own eyes, and word spread; no teams dared to cross after that."
"A Level Five exotic beast? Isn't that beyond the exam's scope?" Lin Yao questioned.
According to past exam practices, there generally wouldn't be any beasts above Level Four within designated testing areas. Even if one or two occasionally crossed over, they would be reported immediately and dealt with by the invigilators.
"Some teams reported it, but the invigilators said it was within normal limits and asked candidates to handle it themselves," Meng Xingchen explained.
"That's strange," Lin Yao remarked.
Everyone had two theories: one suggested they should work together to take down this beast; another speculated that this year’s special recruitment difficulty had been raised to prevent some slackers from passing.
"Which theory do you think has more supporters?" Zhang Feng asked curiously.
"Definitely the first one; who would admit they're a slacker?" Meng Xingchen replied. "I heard that Yao Beiluo, the top talent from Yunmeng Star with Level Five metal abilities, has already organized students to surround and kill that giant python. Boss, should we join them?"
"There's no rush on this; after all, we just arrived. Let's take a look first," said Meng Xingchen.
"Alright, I'll continue gathering information," Zhang Feng replied.
With that, Meng Xingchen left, and Zhang Feng couldn't sit idle either. "Captain, since I'm not doing anything, how about I look for a suitable campsite?"
"Sure. If we can't find one, it's fine; we can always sleep in the trees."
"I got it, Captain."
Once her teammates had left, Lin Yao stood still for a moment, lost in thought before slowly making her way away.
She arrived at the banks of the Blue Ribbon River and discovered that someone was organizing students to set up posts along the river.
Upon seeing Lin Yao approach, the guard stopped her. "Hey, you! The Blue Ribbon River ahead has a Level Five Giant Python."
"Can I take a look by the river?" Lin Yao asked.
"You can, but there are some things I need to clarify with you. We're only monitoring the movements of the giant python here and are not responsible for anything else. If the python is startled and danger arises, we won't provide assistance."
"I understand. Thank you for the warning; you all have worked hard," Lin Yao replied before heading straight to the riverbank.
The water of the Blue Ribbon River was a deep blue, resembling a blue jade ribbon from afar, which is how it got its name.
Lin Yao crouched down where there was some aquatic grass by the river and was about to use her abilities to stimulate the plants when she heard fragmented voices from the lookout.
"Keep an eye on the riverbank; someone has passed by."
"It's so dangerous; how can we let people near the river? What if that person attracts the giant python?"
"Yes, Young Master Yao said we only need to serve as a warning. We can't stop anyone who wants to go near."
"I think Young Master Yao's rule is problematic. There will always be some self-righteous people taking risks by the river, which increases our workload!" a male voice said angrily.
A delicate voice interjected soothingly, "Zhao Ge, don't be upset. Being too forceful will cause issues; Young Master Yao's approach is meant to reduce conflicts."
The male voice didn't dare openly express his dissatisfaction with Yao Beiluo and could only vent his frustration on Lin Yao, who had just come from the riverbank.
"You! Yes, you! What are you doing running around by the river? Do you know that doing so might attract the giant python?"
Lin Yao turned her head and was surprised to see her cousin Lin Yue along with her team members.
It turned out that Lin Yue was the one who had caused her death, and the others, seeing Lin Yue's actions without intervening, were naturally complicit as well.
Who would have thought that before she could even confront them, they would come knocking at her door? Lin Yao had been planning her own revenge, but Lin Yue discovered her first and even put on a show.
Her expression shifted from shock and disappointment to sudden joy. She rushed over, exclaiming, "Sister, I’m so glad you’re okay! You have no idea how worried I was when I saw you fall!"
As Lin Yue was about to embrace her, Lin Yao extended her hand to push her away, her tone laced with sarcasm. "You've been hanging around here for two or three days, right? You’re worried about me but ran over so quickly? That must have been quite a struggle for you."
Lin Yue was clearly taken aback by this change in attitude and almost stumbled over her words in response. "Sister, what do you mean by that? Are you blaming me for not saving you?"
Lin Yao remained silent, her expression a mocking smirk.
Despite her doubts, Lin Yue didn't want to ruin her carefully crafted image in front of everyone. With tears welling in her eyes, she explained, "I’m sorry, Sister. I should have ignored their objections and insisted on saving you!"
Her pitiful little face, paired with those tear-filled eyes, truly evoked sympathy. However, the boy who had just scolded Lin Yao immediately stepped up as her protector. "Lin Yao, didn’t you come back alive? You’re not hurt at all. What’s the point of saying all this now?"
