After several experiences, Lin Yao dared not sign at any of the white checkpoints they encountered later on. The two of them hurried along, and by nightfall, they finally came across a few scattered groups of candidates.
As they rested that evening, Meng Xingchen looked at the lively campsite where several teams had gathered and couldn't help but sigh, "We finally caught up with the last wave. I was worried we would fall too far behind and end up unable to complete the exam."
Candidates were not allowed to attack each other, and during the day they were busy traveling. The nighttime provided a rare opportunity to rest, creating a harmonious atmosphere throughout the campsite.
"Sister, that grilled meat over there smells so good. I'm going to buy some," Lin Yao said.
Both of them were hopeless in the kitchen. Meng Xingchen, the young master, could only manage to cook things until they were done; he had learned this skill just before the exam. Lin Yao had always lived in a place where filling her stomach was the priority, so she had no concept of culinary skills whatsoever. Thus, along their journey, they took turns preparing meals that merely kept them from starving.
Now that there was someone who could make delicious grilled meat, Meng Xingchen couldn't resist any longer. The person grilling was a tall and sturdy young man with dark skin and a simple appearance. His teammates lounged behind him, sprawled out and picking their teeth, clearly having eaten their fill.
Even so, one of them continued to complain, "Hey, Zhang Feng, can you try a different cooking method next time? I'm getting tired of grilled meat every day!"
The young man grilling didn't get angry; instead, he explained patiently, "We don't have any other cooking tools; we can only grill it."
"Are you blaming us for not bringing a pot?" one of his teammates chimed in playfully.
Meng Xingchen found it hard to watch and walked over to ask the grilling young man, "Hey, can you grill me some meat? Don't worry; I'll pay you. Just give me your contact info, and I'll transfer you the money once we finish the exam."
"You don't have to pay; I can help you out," Zhang Feng replied hesitantly.
"It's fine; I have my own meat," Meng Xingchen said as he took out a large piece of meat from his storage space and handed it to him. "Just give me your contact info; how about two thousand star coins? I'll transfer you the money once we're out."
Zhang Feng waved his hands quickly. "No, no! Just helping out; there's no need for payment!"
"It's tough enough with this exam; I can't let you work for free. Your name is Zhang Feng, right? If you don't accept my offer, I'll just transfer two thousand to every candidate named Zhang Feng after we finish."
Zhang Feng became anxious. "Really not necessary! If you keep insisting like this, I won't grill for you anymore!"
This was Meng Xingchen's first encounter with someone who wouldn't accept money even when offered. He could only respond helplessly, "Alright then, I appreciate it, Zhang Feng."
The two of them reached an agreement quite well. However, Zhang Feng's teammates were not pleased with his decision. "Zhang Feng, who told you to refuse on your own? You're part of a team; the money should go to the team! What right do you have to refuse?"
"Captain, I can't listen to you this time. We agreed not to take any money, so that's final!" Zhang Feng's refusal was resolute.
"When did it become your place to make decisions for the team?" Meng Xingchen couldn't tolerate that remark.
It was just a team-up; no one was selling themselves. Why should the results of individual efforts be shared with the group? He had never seen anything so outrageous.
He immediately shot back, "I’m not part of your team’s meat; I didn’t ask for help with the barbecue. What right do you have to demand money?"
"On what basis? What gives you the right?" The leader of the group stood up, his face full of arrogance, turning to his companions behind him.
The boys behind him also stood up, swaying in agreement. "Just because this guy is a poor peasant from a remote star and no one wanted to team up with him. If it weren't for our captain's kindness, he would probably be all alone. Shouldn't he be grateful and serve us like a cow or a horse?"
"Haha, exactly."
Meng Xingchen was infuriated. He had seen shamelessness before, but never to this extent. They were truly embarrassing themselves.
The captain charged forward, attempting to grab Meng Xingchen by the collar, but he dodged skillfully.
Fuming with anger, he spat out, "I bet you can't even afford the money! Acting all high and mighty! Two thousand per person? Pfft!"
"You think I can’t afford it? You clearly don’t know who I am. With people like you, I’d rather throw my money away than give it to you! A bunch of parasites exploiting their teammates."
"Who are you calling parasites?"
"I’m talking about you parasites!" Meng Xingchen pointed directly at the captain's nose as he cursed.
"He’s insulting us, brother! Let’s teach him a lesson!"
Zhang Feng rushed out to block them. "You can't hit him!"
"Get out of my way!" The captain tried to shove him aside, but Zhang Feng stood firm as an unyielding mountain. The captain felt a mix of embarrassment and anger. "Zhang Feng, are you going to move or not?"
"I won’t move. If you bully me, that’s one thing; don’t bully good people." Zhang Feng’s tall figure remained steadfast.
The captain gritted his teeth. "Fine, if you won’t move, we’ll take you down too!"
"So shameless! You want to gang up on me? Come on then! Who's afraid of who?" At first, Meng Xingchen felt a bit scared, but seeing Zhang Feng stand up for him ignited his own courage.
That kind of talk only attracted more hostility.
So several people surrounded Zhang Feng while others bypassed him and charged at Meng Xingchen.
Meng Xingchen wasn’t great at fighting; from the very start, he was getting beaten up and howling in pain.
"Help! Sister Yao, save me!"
The commotion they stirred up was quite loud, quickly attracting a crowd of onlookers. Lin Yao initially didn't want to get involved, but Meng Xingchen was struggling in the fight, being beaten by several people and crying out in pain, loud enough for half the camp to hear.
Worried that he might get hurt, she squeezed her way through the crowd. Upon seeing a group of people surrounding Meng Xingchen and beating him, she rushed in, kicking a few of the boys to the ground and rescuing him.
"What on earth are you doing? You can start a fight just to buy some barbecue?"
"Sister, I'll explain later. Can you help Zhang Feng? You know, the tall, muscular guy!"
That guy isn't as weak as you think. Although Lin Yao said this, she still charged in to save him. The team leader who had been knocked down was still unwilling to accept defeat and shouted, "Why are you meddling in other people's business?"
"Meddling? He's my captain!" Meng Xingchen lifted his chin proudly.
Upon hearing this, the group fell silent. After all, Lin Yao had just stormed into the crowd and taken down several of them with ease, targeting their weak points and leaving them unable to get up for a while.
"From now on, if you see me, just steer clear! Otherwise, don’t blame our captain for hitting you!" Meng Xingchen continued to boast.
Lin Yao quickly pulled away the embarrassed and battered figure from the scene.
