The Reserved Empress
The Empress had a bit of extra flesh around her waist, but looking at her face, which was quite slender, one would not expect her figure to be so curvaceous.
Instinctively, Chen Anlin tightened his grip a little more. It wasn’t intentional; he simply felt nervous in such a high place. When people get anxious, they tend to grasp onto something subconsciously. However, reason soon reminded him that if he continued like this, he might be thrown off at any moment.
Chen Anlin swallowed hard. The wind was growing stronger, and he was starting to feel uncomfortable.
Suddenly, the Empress came to an abrupt stop, and Chen Anlin inevitably bumped into her.
He froze. How bold of him to collide with the Empress! Startled, he quickly stole a glance at her profile. To his surprise, the Empress showed no reaction at all.
Phew, that’s a relief.
What he didn’t know was that the Empress’s cheeks were already flushed bright red at that moment.
After a brief pause, she realized she was also quite exhausted and needed to rest. Recognizing their surroundings, she chose a nearby hill and descended.
Eagerly dismounting from her flying sword, Wu Xixue turned back with a frown. “What are you doing, Little Anzi?”
Chen Anlin quickly straightened up. “Your Majesty, I wasn’t doing anything.”
“Useless,” Wu Xixue scoffed.
Realizing his small actions had been noticed, Chen Anlin hurriedly knelt down and pleaded, “Your Majesty, please don’t be angry! I didn’t mean to; it was beyond my control.”
He felt helpless. Could he really be blamed for this? He was just an ordinary man; it wasn’t something he could manage. If there was anyone to blame, it would have to be the Empress for being so beautiful.
"Do that again, and I will squash you," the Empress declared, her chest rising and falling with anger, her face radiating a murderous intent as if she truly intended to end Chen Anlin's life at that very moment.
Chen Anlin wore an innocent expression; he knew the Empress was merely venting her frustration, but judging by her demeanor, she was indeed upset.
How could he possibly win her favor?
"Your Majesty, you must be hungry," he suggested. "How about we gather some firewood and heat up the food we brought?"
On this outing, the Empress had prepared some dry rations and jerky. As she spoke, she leaped onto a large tree and sat cross-legged to regain her strength.
Suddenly, Chen Anlin drew his sword, his thoughts racing as the blade flew from his hand, piercing a spot deep within the forest.
"Thud!"
"What are you doing?" Wu Xixue opened her eyes, curious about Chen Anlin's actions.
With a grin, he explained, "Your Majesty, eating only dry rations and jerky is too bland. There's game around here."
He jumped into the bushes and emerged holding a bloodied rabbit in one hand and his sword in the other. "Your Majesty, do you prefer spicy or salty? Little Anlin will prepare a barbecue for you."
Wu Xixue was surprised. "You can cook?"
"I did take the royal cookbook before," he replied with a hint of pride. "I've studied it for a while."
"Even so, I doubt it will taste good," Wu Xixue said skeptically, not believing Chen Anlin could whip up anything delicious.
"Hehe, just wait and see," he said with a mischievous smile directed at her.
However, as he looked up at the Empress perched on the tree, he suddenly froze. Due to her long skirt, he had an unobstructed view of her beautiful legs—smooth and fair.
Goodness! The Empress wasn't wearing any safety shorts.
Chen Anlin quickly lowered his gaze, feeling somewhat helpless. It seemed that even the Empress could be careless about such things without realizing it. Perhaps he should make her a pair of safety shorts someday.
Shaking his head, he couldn't help but feel exasperated; being a loyal subject certainly came with its own set of worries.
From Wu Xixue's perspective, however, something about Chen Anlin seemed off!
Something feels off!
This guy is too brash, still hunched over even now.
She suddenly felt a bit troubled. Was her charm really that great?
But some boys are truly pitiful; they have to handle everything themselves. Wu Xixue thought to herself.
Suddenly, her nose twitched as she caught a faint whiff of meat aroma.
Oh, it really does smell good.
She noticed Chen Anlin taking out some unfamiliar spices and evenly sprinkling them over the rabbit legs, releasing a delightful fragrance into the air.
This is too fragrant!
She immediately felt that the dried meat she had on her was no longer appealing and couldn’t help but swallow hard.
Your Majesty, it’s ready! Chen Anlin sighed with relief; the two plump rabbit legs were now prepared!
Wu Xixue was already starving, but out of modesty, she took the rabbit leg slowly: It looks quite appetizing; I just wonder how it tastes.
Your Majesty, you should like this flavor! Chen Anlin said.
Is that so? Then I shall reluctantly give it a try!
Wu Xixue took a bite, and instantly her eyes seemed to light up; she felt invigorated.
Delicious! It’s truly delicious!
In an instant, Wu Xixue fell in love with this unique flavor.
With one bite, her mouth was filled with oil, which dripped down the corners of her lips.
A puff of steam rose from the meat, and the rich aroma made even Chen Anlin swallow hard.
This is what deliciousness feels like!
Chen Anlin smiled; although Wu Xixue appeared very composed, he knew her well—she clearly loved to eat despite trying to act reserved!
He joined in as well, having sprinkled quite a bit of his special pepper on those rabbit legs.
Not bad at all!
