With a sudden "splash," the warehouse's fire sprinkler system activated, showering water from above.
The sprinkler heads inside the warehouse unleashed a torrent of water.
The unexpected turn of events left Zhao Zhiqiang stunned, and he instinctively released Bai Qingxia's hand.
"Lu Yuanqiu, you've got some guts! How dare you meddle in my business!"
"I suggest you recognize the situation and get lost!" I replied coldly, my tone firm.
Zhao Zhiqiang sneered, "Fine, you have guts! We'll see about this!" He glared at me fiercely.
Drenched and disheveled, Zhao Zhiqiang stumbled out from within, his hair plastered to his forehead. He looked at me in confusion, as if still processing what had just happened.
Frustrated, he shot me a glare and said, "Lu Yuanqiu, just wait!" With that, he turned and slammed the door behind him.
Caught off guard by the sudden downpour, Zhao Zhiqiang wiped the water from his face and shouted, "Lu Yuanqiu, you're asking for it! I didn't have time to think; I grabbed her and ran toward the warehouse door.
"Trying to escape? Not so easy!" Zhao Zhiqiang quickly regained his composure and charged after us. His wet hair clung to his cheeks, his eyes filled with shock and confusion. Bai Qingxia instinctively glanced back at the frozen Zhao Zhiqiang before looking at my firm grip on her arm as if I were pulling her away from danger.
I pulled Bai Qingxia along swiftly, glancing back to see Zhao Zhiqiang closing in on us. I knew we couldn't let them catch up.
Suddenly, I pushed Bai Qingxia aside while sidestepping Zhao Zhiqiang's punch. His fist missed its target, causing him to stumble slightly as his knuckles turned white from the impact.
Zhao Zhiqiang and his lackeys were caught off guard by the sudden deluge of water, their curses abruptly silenced. Seizing an empty cardboard box, I turned and hurled it at the nearest lackey chasing us. The box struck him squarely in the face, eliciting a muffled grunt as he staggered backward a few steps.
Another lackey hesitated for a moment, but then, in a fit of anger, swung his fist at me again. I reacted quickly, grabbing his wrist and twisting it forcefully while raising my foot to kick at his knee. Zhao Zhiqiang grimaced in pain and dropped to one knee.
Almost instinctively, I shoved Zhao Zhiqiang back toward the two other lackeys who were egging him on, then turned and dashed toward the fire sprinkler switch in the corner of the warehouse.
"Who do you think you are, saving the day?" he sneered, exerting more force. Bai Qingxia winced in pain, her brow furrowing. Her lips parted slightly as if she wanted to say something but then fell silent.
The two lackeys continued to jeer, and with the floor slick from the sprinkler, Zhao Zhiqiang fell hard and struggled to get back up.
I grabbed Bai Qingxia and we rushed out of the warehouse. Outside, Aunt Wang stood there in shock, holding a broom and dustpan.
I took a deep breath and pulled down the switch just before Zhao Zhiqiang could grab me.
"Zzzz—"
The piercing alarm instantly filled the warehouse, red warning lights flashing incessantly.
I was slightly out of breath as I wiped my face with my hand and explained to Aunt Wang, "I accidentally hit the sprinkler switch in the warehouse. It's fine, Aunt Wang; we're leaving now." I paused for a moment to glance at Bai Qingxia beside me. She had her head down, gripping her clothes tightly, her shoulders trembling slightly. I continued, "It's just a misunderstanding."
I pulled Bai Qingxia out of the warehouse as the water flowed increasingly heavily behind us, creating chaos inside. Aunt Wang happened to pass by and froze at the sight, her mouth agape as she dropped her shopping basket, fruits and vegetables spilling everywhere.
Zhao Zhigang continued to pursue us. I shielded Bai Qingxia behind me and kicked at his abdomen. He cried out in pain, doubling over and losing his fighting spirit.
I grabbed Bai Qingxia's hand firmly. "Run!"
Bai Qingxia looked up at me with a complex expression in her eyes but said nothing; she simply nodded gently.
Aunt Wang glanced between us with a hint of confusion in her gaze but didn’t press for answers. Instead, she said, "Hurry up and change your clothes."
Bai Qingxia ran to the entrance of the supermarket, finally letting out a sigh of relief. She glanced back at the warehouse, now submerged in water, with streams flowing out from the entrance like a small creek trickling across the supermarket floor.
Her hair and clothes were soaked, but she seemed unconcerned, staring at me with a complex expression in her eyes.
“Lu Yuanqiu! Stop right there!” Zhao Zhiqiang shouted from behind, but the rushing water in the warehouse hindered his movement.
I had gripped Bai Qingxia's wrist a bit too tightly, leaving it slightly red. I quickly released my hold and offered her an apologetic smile.
With her wet hair clinging to her face and her clothes drenched, she showed no signs of panic. Instead, there was a hint of surprise and... gratitude? She looked somewhat pitiful, a stark contrast to her usual aloof demeanor.
I led Bai Qingxia to the Employee Lounge in the supermarket so she could change clothes. The lounge was quiet, with only the sound of rain pattering outside. When she emerged after changing, there was still a trace of shock on her face. She approached me and softly said, “Thank you.”
I looked at her and smiled slightly. “It’s nothing, just a small act of kindness.”
Bai Qingxia's gaze lingered on my face for a moment as if assessing the truth behind my words. In the end, she said nothing more, merely lowering her head and brushing her damp hair back with her hand.
Once outside the supermarket, I finally felt relieved. I glanced back to ensure that Zhao Zhiqiang and his group hadn’t followed before stopping in my tracks.
I turned to look at her. “What’s wrong?” She raised her head, looking at me with a complicated expression. After hesitating for a moment, she asked, “Why did you help me?”
I chuckled softly. “It’s just a matter of standing up for what’s right; isn’t that a good thing?”
