The next day at work, the atmosphere in the company was particularly oppressive, as if the low air pressure made it hard to breathe.
It was said that the big boss, Jian Youming, was wandering around the office with a face that resembled a scorned woman's, occasionally passing by Wang Xue's desk. Unfortunately, as a newcomer just stepping into the workforce, Wang Xue was so focused on her work that she hadn’t lifted her head even once throughout the morning.
As a result, Jian Youming's expression grew increasingly resentful.
Returning to his office, Jian Youming paced back and forth for an hour, pondering how he could invite Wang Xue to dinner in a way that conveyed his superiority.
Internally conflicted, his usually sharp and agile mind—so adept at handling financial matters—felt as if it were filled with glue, leaving him as bewildered as an inexperienced youth in love. By the time work was about to end, he ultimately decided to take the most straightforward approach—he would simply go find her.
However, as soon as he descended to their department, he was taken aback to see a crowd of employees making a ruckus. Wang Xue had her head lowered shyly while Liu Zeran was picking up her bag, seemingly preparing to take her away.
Jian Youming's mind exploded with disbelief; he rushed forward without thinking and forcefully pushed Liu Zeran aside. "What are you doing?!"
Liu Zeran stumbled back a step, his smile fading gradually. He glanced at his hand that had just been shoved away by Jian Youming, and his expression darkened involuntarily.
"You actually pushed me?"
Seeing Liu Zeran's sour expression, Wang Xue weighed her options and decided that her direct superior's feelings were more important. She spoke up to defend him, "Why did you push him? I agreed to go with him myself..." Liu Zeran had just invited her to dinner, and she had indeed nodded in agreement.
Upon hearing this, Jian Youming's reaction was unexpectedly intense; his body even swayed slightly.
Liu Zeran observed this with surprise. He looked at Jian Youming's pale face and then at Wang Xue's innocent yet righteous expression. Suddenly enlightened, a knowing smile spread across his face. "Jian Youming, did you hear that?"
Jian Youming was so furious that he felt smoke coming out of his ears, but Wang Xue only added fuel to the fire. "Besides, I have a male friend who's perfectly normal. You already have a girlfriend, Liu Zerou..."
Jian Youming felt his vision darken, and his hands began to tremble slightly. "What... what are you talking about? Who told you that I’m with Zerou..."
Wang Xue bit her lip, looking somewhat displeased. "See, you even call her Zerou now, yet you say there’s nothing between you two. I don’t want to talk to you."
Jian Youming was struck down by her sudden words, feeling utterly miserable. He had harbored a crush on her for so long, and when he received her resume one day, he had been filled with joy and anticipation.
While studying and starting his career alone in Shanghai, whenever he faced difficulties, he would childishly imagine himself as a man striving for success while Wang Xue quietly waited for him back home. Thinking this way seemed to alleviate much of the pressure.
But now, it turned out that Wang Xue had only been indulging in her own fantasies...
However, Jian Youming snapped back to reality with a heart full of grievances as the “thorns” on him suddenly stood up again. "Wait a minute, Liu Zeran! You jerk! You're not..."
"Shh, don’t say it out loud," Liu Zeran said with a glimmer of flirtation in his eyes. He placed a finger gently on Jian Youming's lips while wrapping an arm around Wang Xue. "We’re heading to ‘Camellia’ soon. If you can’t bear to part with Wang Xue, you can come along."
Wang Xue exclaimed in confusion, tilting her head at Liu Zeran. "Why would he be reluctant to leave me? I’ve already finished my work for today."
But Jian Youming understood the deeper meaning behind Liu Zeran's words and felt his face flush instantly. "What do I have to be reluctant about!" He said this and immediately fled the scene.
Liu Zeran shook his head helplessly and sighed. "I thought he had grown from the mixed-blood boy in college into a mature man. I didn’t expect him to still be so childish when his secret was poked at."
