After a long kiss, the two reluctantly parted ways. Mao Na, blushing, pulled Hu Ruoyun up and said, "Let's go home and cook."
The streets were mostly empty, and holding hands as they walked, they weren't worried about being seen. Many families along the street had lanterns hanging at their doors, and the path wasn't too dark.
Upon returning to the Town Government's "villa area," most of the yards were still shrouded in darkness; many people were celebrating the most important festival of the Chinese Nation in their real homes. Mao Na's parents and younger brother, Mao Jie, had prepared a lot of food for her before they left. Together with what Hu Ruoyun brought, they only needed to make a soup and heat everything up.
After dinner and washing the dishes, the two nestled side by side on the sofa watching TV, their heads leaning against each other, hands intertwined.
As it approached nine o'clock, Hu Ruoyun squeezed Mao Na's soft hand gently. "I should head back; if I stay too late, they'll lock the main gate!"
Mao Na grabbed his arm. "You can't go! I'm scared alone. I'll tidy up Mao Jie's room for you; you can stay there tonight!"
While speaking, she got up and rummaged through the cabinet in the inner room to find a brand new set of bedding. She made Mao Jie’s bed look fresh and new and brought a new thermos cup to pour Hu Ruoyun a glass of water, placing it on the small cabinet by the bed. Then she arranged, "We'll have breakfast together tomorrow morning, then you can have your free time. Come back for lunch together, and you can plan your afternoon as you wish. Come back for dinner and keep me company..."
Hu Ruoyun nodded. "Got it, Brother Mao..."
Mao Na playfully scratched him, but Hu Ruoyun caught her hand and kissed it softly. The atmosphere grew increasingly intimate.
Just as Hu Ruoyun felt his mind slipping away from him, the clock in the main room chimed ten o'clock at night. A slightly breathless Mao Na caught Hu Ruoyun's mischievous hand and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before turning to run out.
Is every romantic relationship like this sweet?
Afterward, the lights in the main room went out, and Mao Na entered a sweet dreamland with her flushed cheeks resting against her pillow.
Hu Ruoyun also turned off his light but found it impossible to sleep. In his envisioned future, just like those two monkey stamps, there was no memory of Mao Jie or Sister Mona; this indicated that their current lives had already deviated from their original paths! Whether in future life or love, nothing was predictable anymore; for now, he could only strive to keep pace with this era and stay in sync with this girl...
In the week that followed, Hu Ruoyun and Mao Na's days were monotonously repetitive, yet neither felt bored; instead, they grew closer than ever.
On the Tenth Day of the First Month, Ouyang Xiaxue and Li Shengnan came to visit Mao Na. Seeing how sweetly Mao Na and Hu Ruoyun interacted made Li Shengnan exclaim, "Wow, Mao Ni! You look so good! Your skin is so smooth and tender... By the way, have you two 'broken fast'?"
Mao Na blushed deeply and immediately tried to scratch her friend.
Ouyang Xiaxue stopped her. "Mao Ni, don’t mind her; she thinks everyone is like her just because she 'broke fast' herself..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Li Shengnan pinched her arm playfully: "You told me all about it; how dare you say anything about me?" Ouyang Xiaxue exaggeratedly screamed as she hid behind Mao Na.
That night, the three girls planned to have an all-night "pillow talk," sharing private conversations while Hu Ruoyun consciously excused himself and returned to his dormitory alone.
The next day, Ouyang Xiaxue and Li Shengnan left, and Hu Ruoyun returned to Mao Na's house. After dinner, Mao Na briefly conveyed the content of the "pillow talk meeting" held by the three of them.
Ouyang Xiaxue's boyfriend, Zhang Qiang, had been maliciously sent away by their supervisor to a post in Xipo Store Township. The distance from Xi Po Dian to Annan County City was nearly 50 kilometers, and due to its remoteness, he could only return once a week. This was a tactic employed by her Vice President father to force her into submission through "foreign connections" and "collusion."
However, she refused to compromise, boldly sending her boyfriend off to his new position and that very night staying there without reservation, giving him her first time. Ouyang Xiaxue declared, "I love Zhang Qiang. No matter what he does or where he goes, I am his person unless he gives me up!"
After saying this, Ouyang Xiaxue mentioned Li Shengnan: "Li Shengnan has been having disagreements with that Yao Wei lately. Yao Wei keeps pestering her about marriage, but Li Shengnan feels that 'he hasn't reached her heart yet.' So Yao Wei came up with a devious plan to 'get on the bus first' and force her hand. One day, after Li Shengnan had a few drinks, he tried to take advantage of the situation… but failed miserably. She slapped him and threatened to call the police, which made him break down in tears and kneel before her."
Li Shengnan later said through gritted teeth, "If he were really a man and stood his ground even just once in front of me, I would have seriously considered giving myself to him. But who knew he was such a coward who couldn't handle anything? If he wants to marry me, he can wait until the year of the monkey and the month of the horse!"
After sharing this, Mao Na held Hu Ruoyun's chin and asked, "Mr. Hu, what do you think our situation will be like?"
Hu Ruoyun took her hand and placed it by his mouth: "No matter when or where, You Never Leave, I Will Never Abandon!"
His words unexpectedly brought tears to Mao Na's eyes. She buried her head in Hu Ruoyun's embrace and sobbed, "To be honest, hearing about their situations scares me. They both come from such good families, are attractive, and have decent jobs, yet they can't be the masters of their own marriages!
You live with your parents for just twenty years or so; if you can't be with someone you love for the rest of your life, what's the point? Just settling for a lifetime?"
Hu Ruoyun lifted her chin and wiped away her tears: "Let me sing you a verse; I believe that represents the truest and purest love and marriage."
Without any accompaniment, Hu Ruoyun sang acapella while alternating between male and female voices.
Male voice: On the shores of West Lake lies a dream; everything exists within it. A beautiful girl falls from the sky; love is in the water and tenderness in every glance. Xu Hanwen is just a worker at a pharmacy; without land or home, how can he support a girl?
Female voice: Sir, please do not worry about the past or future; being with you is like being with a maid. I seek neither gold nor silver; your presence is enough. In hard times with simple meals, we won't fuss over delicacies.
Without property or houses, we’ll find a thatched hut; without dowries or bridal carriages, we’ll ride on livestock. You’re a man; I’m a woman; we have no worries about each other. Whether earning more or less money, I can make do. If not working at the pharmacy, I’ll help you gather funds. I know a bit about Bencao Jing and Qi Huang Technique; I’ll write prescriptions while you prepare medicine—we’ll practice medicine together to save lives from plagues—much better than chasing after titles or seeking fame…
Hu Ruoyun’s singing wasn’t perfect but clear enough for Mao Na to understand. In the end, she sighed softly: “But such situations probably only exist in plays…”
Indeed, in reality, they say "money isn't everything, but without money nothing works!"
If I were still that downtrodden Hu Ruoyun from the foreseen future, I probably wouldn't have the confidence or even dare to hold this girl in my arms.
Or perhaps, she wouldn't even pay me any attention at all.
They talk about true and pure love, but without a solid economic and material foundation, everything is just nonsense!
