"Didn't you just say you were going to take a taxi?" Yao Nian watched as the taxi drove away.
Xiao Chi's brows were slightly furrowed, his expression cold, but there was a hint of nonchalance in his demeanor. "I already paid for the ride with the only bill I had on me. How am I supposed to leave?"
Yao Nian found it hard to believe. After all, he was a bar owner; surely he could come up with more than a single bill. But then again, she didn't want to press him too hard. After a moment's hesitation, she said, "Then wait here for me. I'll go get some money for you."
"That sounds like a long wait. I'll go with you to make sure you don't run off," he replied.
Yao Nian was left speechless. Did she really look like someone who would skip out on paying?
As they walked along the tree-lined path towards the girls' dormitory, the campus at night was quiet and serene. The man slightly tilted his head while Yao Nian kept her gaze downcast, her profile illuminated by the warm glow of the streetlights.
But Xiao Chi's keen eyes caught sight of something unusual; beneath the dim light, he noticed two dried tear streaks on her cheeks. "Have you been crying?"
Yao Nian quickly shifted the conversation. "By the way, you mentioned wanting to do some kind of survey last time. Why haven't I seen it yet?"
Xiao Chi chuckled lightly. "What survey? I just said that to get your WeChat."
Yao Nian looked at him, puzzled.
"Well, if I hadn't said that, how else would I have added you?" he replied casually.
Yao Nian paused for a moment before stating bluntly, "I have a boyfriend now."
"The one who picked you up last time?"
"Yeah."
Xiao Chi shrugged dismissively. "Should I wait in line then? If you two break up at any point, let me know and I'll come after you."
Yao Nian found his attitude ridiculous. "Wait a minute; we've only met once, right? Do you even know me?"
"I'm Yao Nian, a freshman in law school from Huaibei. If you want to know more, I can even tell you my phone number."
Seeing the girl glaring at him, Xiao Chi casually said, "I have some connections at Huada; finding out about a girl isn't too difficult for me."
Yao Nian was already in a bad mood, and hearing these words made her even less inclined to engage with him. She unconsciously quickened her pace, eager to get to her dormitory, grab the money, and settle this once and for all.
But Xiao Chi just added fuel to the fire. "Did you have a fight with your boyfriend?"
Yao Nian remained silent, focusing on walking ahead.
Xiao Chi pressed on, "Did he make you cry?"
She could no longer hold back. "What does it have to do with you?"
"Why wouldn't it concern me?" The man’s smile faded, and his gaze turned meaningful. "I’m a straightforward person; if I like someone, I’ll definitely pursue them. I told you, I want to chase you."
Yao Nian fell silent for a moment before lifting her head and saying each word deliberately, "You’re delusional."
Xiao Chi was taken aback for a second before chuckling. "Don’t be so hard on yourself."
When they reached the dormitory entrance, Yao Nian was too tired to waste more words with him. She dropped four words: "I’m going to get the money."
Just right, she planned to return the money including what she owed from that night out.
"No need," Xiao Chi turned away from her and waved his hand dismissively. "Just consider it a favor."
In the living room, a man sat quietly on the sofa, his arms limply resting on his legs, his gaze vacant as if lost in thought.
His phone lit up briefly; the dim light of the screen seemed weak.
He quickly opened the message.
【Yao Nian has arrived at the dormitory.】
Shen Du immediately dialed her number. The phone rang for quite a while before it was answered.
"Hello?" Lin Mo spoke in a hushed tone.
