Zhou Yingying suddenly lifted her head, her eyes red from rubbing them too hard. The person in front of her looked at her with curiosity, clearly thinking, "Wow, I didn't expect Zhou Yingying to cry too." He leaned slightly to one side, as if ready to defend himself against any potential attack.
Zhou Yingying shot him a fierce glare. This guy was Fang Yin, the hall master of Azure Dragon Hall under her father's command. Ever since he joined the Xuanwu Gate, he had been bullied by Zhou Yingying almost every day. Of course, it wasn't anything too excessive, she reassured herself—just making him serve as a target for her jumping exercises or practicing punches—perfectly normal.
She crossed her arms over her chest, her expression filled with displeasure.
"What does it have to do with you!"
Ignoring him, Zhou Yingying buried her face in her palms, brewing up lady-like tears while emanating a dangerous vibe that screamed, "You better not provoke me, or I'll throw you into the Huangpu River."
Fang Yin remained silent for a minute, internally wrestling with himself before finally speaking up. "Yingying, you... are squatting in the middle of the road."
Zhou Yingying lifted her head again and realized that he was right; she was indeed squatting in the middle of the road. To make matters worse, she was right between two bus lanes. The tram driver poked his head out like a giraffe and waved his strong fist threateningly. However, Zhou Yingying had been so caught up in trying to summon tears that she was completely oblivious to the situation.
"Can't you go around?" Zhou Yingying stood up angrily, wiping at her still-red eyes that had yet to shed a single tear. Her fierce shout instantly intimidated the tram driver.
With hands on her hips and her chest heaving dramatically, she glared at him.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" The driver stammered nervously as he shrank back into his vehicle. After a moment's thought, he poked his head out again and said, "Miss, there’s only this one route for the tram..."
As Zhou Yingying contemplated how this driver truly didn’t know what was good for him—didn't he realize who she was?—Fang Yin desperately pulled her aside to avoid losing face for the Xuanwu Gate. Meanwhile, Zhou Yingying continued shouting about how she could perform Wing Chun at three and walk on water at four. With that, the tram was able to pass through, but Miss Zhou was not pleased.
Fang Yin held tightly onto Zhou Yingying's arm and forcefully dragged her toward the roadside.
"Mind your own business!" She angrily shoved Fang Yin aside. Fortunately, he was prepared and steadied himself in a horse stance, avoiding a fall from Miss Zhou's impressive strength.
"I mean..." Fang Yin looked at her as if she were a monster, helplessly rubbing his forehead. "Miss, can you please be reasonable?"
"What if I refuse to be reasonable?" Zhou Yingying waved her hands in the air, her face flushed with anger.
"And you still want to be a lady... If you can't even get married..."
Fang Yin shot her a disdainful glance. "I'll write my name backward if that happens!"
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Zhou Yingying standing alone on the cold roadside at the end of autumn. She stamped her feet in frustration, muttering to herself, "Hmph, what's so great about him!"
Zhou Yingying's thirty-second blind date was with Yan Nuo, a young man who had monopolized the rice business at the Shanghai Bund. It was said that he was a talented youth who had seen the world. Zhou Yingying specially wore what she considered her best qipao and mink coat, even having her nanny style her hair into a ladylike bun and applying heavy makeup.
This was the most upscale Western restaurant in Shanghai. Zhou Yingying sat upright, maintaining the demure smile her nanny had taught her—though to others, it resembled the calm before a tsunami.
She tried to keep her back straight, hands neatly folded on her lap, with a slight upward curve of her lips; yet the smile appeared somewhat stiff.
"Uh... Miss Zhou..." The rice shop owner Yan Nuo was taken aback by the theatrical makeup on Zhou Yingying's face. The introducer had said that the Miss Zhou was virtuous and well-mannered, having studied "The Book of Virtuous Women" since childhood, destined to become a good wife and mother.
"Seeing is believing... Miss Zhou is indeed virtuous and well-mannered..." Yan Nuo said reluctantly while watching Zhou Yingying devour her steak with gusto.
With a knife in one hand and a fork in the other, Zhou Yingying cut into the steak without any semblance of grace, stuffing large bites into her mouth, her cheeks puffed out.
"Where, where..." Zhou Yingying was very pleased to be praised for her virtuous nature. She held up her fork, opened her mouth wide, and grinned at Yan Nuo, revealing a mouthful of food remnants.
Yan Nuo was instantly horrified and hurriedly lowered his head, pretending to sip his coffee elegantly. His hand trembled slightly as he lifted the cup, and his gaze darted away.
The restaurant doors were pulled open by the waiters standing on either side, and a man in a suit walked in with a beaming smile. Zhou Yingying looked up and felt as if a piece of meat she was about to swallow had lodged in her throat.
Her body jolted, and her eyes widened.
The man was none other than Fang Yin.
