Sang Qingxiao demonstrated the creation of a talisman in front of her, a hint of pride in her voice. "The school regulations only state that we cannot alter our student uniforms. This talisman I made merely deceives the eyes; how others perceive it is their own business."
"You're quite adept at finding loopholes," she remarked.
Sang Qingxiao spoke softly, almost playfully, "Headmaster, it's really ugly. Even my rough cloth garments look better than this. I wonder who proposed such restrictive clothing for women; I bet it was some male Headmaster."
"Don't concern yourself with who it is. You're only here for a few months, and I don't want to be the villain constantly restricting you. However, don't make things difficult for me either. Since you haven't violated any rules regarding the clothing, I'll turn a blind eye this time. But if other students ask for your help with their clothes, you cannot agree. Also, try not to cause trouble for me. If you must stir up trouble, it's best not to do it within the academy."
Sang Qingxiao was surprised by Meng Zhangyuan's open-mindedness. After chatting amicably for a while and giving her a few protective talismans, she headed towards the classroom.
Lian Baoying had saved them seats early in the morning. As Sang Qingxiao scanned the room, she noticed that it was divided by several invisible boundaries.
With Lian Baoying's introduction, Sang Qingxiao realized that ancient classrooms were somewhat similar to modern ones in certain aspects. For instance, those who struggled academically always hid in the back rows while the top students rushed to the front.
Moreover, students from comparable backgrounds tended to cluster together. The children from the Surname Family mostly huddled in corners, appearing more diligent, but without a solid foundation laid in their early years, their achievements could only be considered average.
Sang Qingxiao and Lian Baoying chose to sit at the back with their friends.
Lian Baoying laughed at herself for merely passing time and envied Sang Qingxiao for being able to do so without worrying about grades.
Sang Qingxiao could relate to her but occasionally glanced toward the children from the Surname Family. In a classroom of over thirty girls, only three came from commoner backgrounds.
Sang Qingxiao steered the conversation toward them.
When Lian Baoying looked at them, her expression showed no difference; instead, she expressed sympathy. "Having ambition is good, but they seem to be working too hard. Even if they struggle until the end, will they truly achieve what they desire?"
"What do they want?" Sang Qingxiao asked.
To transcend their social class, perhaps. If they were boys, there might be some hope; unfortunately, being born female limits their possibilities. No nobleman would ever look their way regardless of how hard they worked or how well they studied.
Having experienced life at the Imperial Academy broadened their horizons and made them bolder, yet society wouldn't allow them to move forward. They could never return to their past but found themselves unable to take another step ahead.
No matter how well they did, they would only ever occupy some family's teaching position.
Sang Qingxiao questioned further, "Aren't there positions for female officials in the palace?"
"You think being a female official is easy? Besides, at this age, it's too late; the palace wants girls like Ji Xiao who have been trained from a young age."
Sang Qingxiao asked again, "Just now, I saw not only Meng Zhangyuan but also a Female Scholar from the Imperial Academy. In the entire Great Jing Dynasty, there is only this one Women's Academy. How many Female Scholars can there be?"
"Since the outcome is already decided, why are they putting in so much effort?"
"Perhaps they believe that there is always a chance, no matter how slim."
Sang Qingxiao lowered her voice and continued her inquiry. "A few days ago, I saw them several times in the Marketplace, but according to School Regulations, those who live on campus are not allowed to go out freely. There are Strong Women guarding outside the main gate. How did they manage to get out?"
