In the following days, Yong Huai devoted himself fully, going every morning with haste. Upon arrival, he would always take a bath first before heading to the Small Tavern, where he would eat breakfast while discussing Ling Qian's condition with Sang Qingxiao.
Most of the time, her mind was muddled, unable to recognize anyone. Yet, when it came to protecting the child, she was relentless. The child had been dead for several days, but she refused to let go. She would wake up for about an hour each day, spending the rest of her time in deep sleep. When she did awaken, all she could do was cry, and she cried incessantly.
Her body was already in such poor condition, yet her spirit remained strong. If it weren't for the sight of her abdomen rotting away, one might mistakenly think her situation could still improve. Sang Qingxiao asked if the Second Prince still felt deeply for her.
Yong Huai frowned and replied with a strange expression that it was hard to understand how he could endure it. The smell in Ling Qian's room had become increasingly unbearable; even the strongest medicinal scents couldn't mask it, yet the Second Prince acted as if nothing were wrong.
Ling Jiudao had stayed the longest; logically speaking, he should have adapted better than the rest of them. However, Yong Huai had seen him several times seeking a secluded spot to bend over and vomit. The Second Prince's concern for Ling Qian seemed superficial at best. Yong Huai had accidentally glimpsed his woman's belly, and he had shown no signs of blocking his view.
Ling Jiudao had warned him about the dangers of a stillborn not being expelled in time. Though he spoke of helplessness and heartache, Yong Huai could see that he seemed intent on letting her suffer until the end.
Several eligible young women from official families in the Capital were already stirring with interest; they approached him without any apparent rejection from the Second Prince. Previously, Yong Huai had thought that there was genuine affection between these two, but now it appeared to be nothing more than a performance.
Additionally, Ling Qian's prolonged slumber had its reasons. Although he wasn't well-versed in pharmacology, he recognized the scents of several common sedatives; sometimes they were even used on demons. There were remnants of such substances in Ling Qian's room that should have been cleared away before his visit. The lingering scent was still strong enough to be harmful if inhaled too much.
Who else besides the Second Prince would dare to do such things?
Yong Huai sighed repeatedly. Noticing his fatigue, Sang Qingxiao offered him some of her demon-hunting energy. After experiencing it, Yong Huai felt a surge of joy; it was incredibly pure! He nearly asked Sang Qingxiao how she cultivated such power but hesitated, fearing it might seem like a test. Instead, he changed the subject with a smile and said that he heard from elders at home that those four families had sought out Miss Sang.
There was also the Jin Family; Jin Shitong from that family was somewhat clever but ultimately remained a bystander and did not take action against him. So he let him off easy.
What did they say about him? That he was young and arrogant, looking down on them? That seemed to be the gist of it.
Yong Huai didn't hide this from them either; Jin Shitong actually spoke quite highly of him and even imitated some harsh words he had said—words that were likely fed to him by Yong Huai himself.
Sang Qingxiao nodded in agreement.
In my opinion, if a young lady is capable enough, she should put them in their place. They think they are so impressive when there are always others out there who are better than them. If they remain complacent and stagnant in their little corner, they will eventually be taught a lesson!
Lord Yong seemed to imply something significant here.
Regarding your situation, our Yong Family is roughly divided into two factions: one that covets your power and another that wishes to befriend you.
As for Lord Yong, he naturally wants to be on good terms with you. However, during every gathering of the Demon Catching Realm, discussions about you would often lead to arguments. Thankfully, things have calmed down now.
Yet, some individuals seem unwilling to give up. They have adopted a new method, planning to send people over to befriend you first before seeking opportunities to act.
You should be cautious in dealing with them.
