Like two little adults, Qi Xiaomian chuckled. Coming from the prestigious Office of Censors and holding the title of Buddha Child, he was naturally precocious. As he spoke, Qi Xiaomian's smile shifted; the corners of his lips involuntarily curled up, revealing a hint of bitterness, a touch of self-mockery, a sense of release, and a dash of wickedness.
Zhu Gangzong had received news from the Empress Dowager and had already dispatched capable personnel to Huzhou. By now, they should have met with the Yue Governor.
"Is Zhu still alive?"
"Not for long; he's hanging on by medication."
"Why not just kill him?" Sang Qingxiao suggested. "You don’t plan to use him to testify against the Empress Dowager anyway. Keeping him around will only require you to divide your attention and assign someone to watch over him; it’s easy for things to slip through the cracks."
Qi Xiaomian replied, "As for the Empress Dowager, I suspect she might still use tactics against me. Keeping Zhu alive is mainly because he hasn’t said much yet. I need to extract more leverage regarding the Empress Dowager from him just in case."
"Oh dear, how pitiful! Always on guard," Sang Qingxiao said mockingly while patting Qi Xiaomian's head a few times. He quickly withdrew his hand as Qi Xiaomian was about to protest.
"Don’t think I didn’t see that! You did the same when you patted Little Treasure—no respect!"
"My sister used to do that when she patted her pets; I wouldn’t bother telling you."
"Hmph! You’re not much older than me; we’re peers. Besides, didn’t you pat my back last night?"
The two laughed and joked for a while longer, appearing even more casual and close in the eyes of others.
Sang Qingxiao continued with their previous topic, "What’s the point of approaching the Yue Governor? Isn’t he bedridden?"
Qi Xiaomian nodded. "Now that he’s fallen ill, his subordinates have become quite active. News about the Yue Governor's condition will soon appear before His Majesty. The political scene in Huzhou will likely be turbulent for a while."
"And so what? It has nothing to do with us," Sang Qingxiao remarked as she caught sight of Qi Xiaomian's meaningful expression. "What? You don’t have any thoughts about Huzhou, do you?"
Qi Xiaomian did not deny it. "There’s money there, business opportunities, established processes for commerce, and a foundation for managing counties—it’s an easy place to get started. Moreover, those Old Foxes in Court probably look down on such a commercial county."
"I initially wanted to secretly win over the Yue Governor. However, knowing his character and condition made me abandon that idea. Perhaps it’s time for a change in leadership in Huzhou; I need to consider this replacement carefully."
