Mingze returned late at night, exhausted, and upon seeing Zhu Zhu anxiously waiting for him at the door, he let out a breath. His wife had come out; Old Madam had come out.
Mingze felt a severe headache coming on. What was she causing a fuss about now?
"Master Xiang, I'm sorry. I failed to manage this household properly. I was just afraid of Old Madam causing trouble, and there were other matters to attend to, so I gave her a bowl of calming soup. "Yes," the physician confirmed. "By Old Madam's bedside, there was a bowl left behind. I looked at what remained in the bowl and concluded that the medicine was indeed the culprit behind Old Madam's stroke."
The doorman said no one else had entered Old Madam's room. However, Mingze insisted that he only gave her a bowl of calming soup; the medicine had been prepared by the physician. "Don't worry, I'll go take a look."
When Mingze saw Old Madam's paralyzed state, he felt torn between sorrow and anger. He sighed again and asked Old Madam if anyone else had come in.
Despite Old Madam's crooked mouth, twitching eyes, inability to speak, and complete immobility—only able to grunt, shed tears, and drool—Mingze understood her affirmative response. However, for more complex questions, Old Madam could no longer express herself.
Mingze scanned the surroundings for more clues and stumbled upon several books among the miscellaneous items beside the soft couch.
As soon as he opened one of the books, he recognized it as Uncle's notes. Upon further inspection, he found it contained secrets about his enemies in court.
Mingze felt confused; this person who entered the mansion had poisoned his mother yet left these documents for him—were they friend or foe?
He still needed to send someone to investigate, although he doubted they would uncover much.
His attention returned to the books; Zhao Family’s records surely contained more than this. Where had the other volumes gone? Most likely with the poisoner. He couldn't fathom what their intentions were; for now, Mingze decided to pretend he knew nothing.
"Master Xiang, do we need to summon an imperial physician?" Zhu Zhu asked.
"I know a few highly skilled folk doctors; let's have them take a look first."
As soon as Mingze finished speaking, Old Madam began to cry out in anger.
Mingze explained further that most imperial physicians followed a moderate approach; their prescriptions focused on nourishment with treatment as a secondary concern. If too much time passed and her condition deteriorated without proper care, she might not recover.
"The poison in your system is severe; for serious illnesses, strong medicine is required. Folk doctors tend to be bolder in their methods. If they can't help you, then I'll kneel before His Majesty."
Only then did Old Madam cease her protests.
Mingze instructed Zhu Zhu to take good care of Old Madam before heading to his study. He sat there in the darkness without bothering to light a lamp. His earlier reassurances to Old Madam were half-truths at best.
The Zhao Family was quite large, and at this critical moment, it was truly inappropriate to summon the imperial physician. Moreover, Old Madam had been poisoned, and after the physician's examination, the Emperor had learned of it as well.
Although the poison was not fatal, its origins were mysterious. Fearing that the Emperor might become suspicious, it was best to temporarily endure the situation for her sake.
