Just as they had finally caught their breath after escaping the pitfall crisis, a chilling "whoosh" echoed through the tomb passage, sending shivers down their spines.
The sound reverberated in the silent corridor, like the wail of death itself.
Lao Hu, drawing on years of experience dealing with danger in the mountains, instantly realized what was happening. He shouted, "It's the Dark Arrow trap! Don't just stand there—find cover!"
His rugged voice boomed through the tomb, carrying an undeniable authority.
Panic surged through everyone as their hearts raced, the tense atmosphere enveloping them like a tangible weight.
In an instant, countless sharp arrows shot out from small holes in the walls, raining down like a storm, leaving trails of cold light in their wake.
These arrows were clearly crafted with precision; their tips were razor-sharp, glinting with a chilling metallic sheen. Mysterious patterns seemed to be etched along the shafts, whispering of their ancient and deadly purpose.
Lao Hu quickly raised his shotgun and fired at the oncoming hail of arrows, trying to deflect some of them with bullets.
His gaze was steady and calm; years of hunting had trained him to maintain composure even in dire moments. The sound of gunfire echoed through the passage as smoke began to fill the air.
With each shot, Lao Hu adjusted his stance slightly to ensure accuracy, muttering under his breath, "Hitting us won't be so easy!"
A Ling hurriedly pulled out a talisman from her bag, chanting incantations as she hurled it toward the source of the arrow storm. Her expression was serious and focused, her eyes radiating a mysterious power.
The talisman ignited in mid-air, creating a faint barrier. Some arrows seemed to be halted by an invisible force upon contact with it, falling harmlessly to the ground.
A Ling called out, "This talisman can hold them off for a bit, but it won't last long! We need to figure out how to disable the trap quickly!"
Beads of sweat formed on her forehead, and a strand of hair clung to her cheek from the moisture. Yet she paid no mind to it, fully immersed in her battle against the mechanism.
Zhang Qi held the monkey tightly in one arm while wielding his long knife with the other, deflecting the arrows that were shot at them one by one.
Veins bulged on his forehead, and sweat poured down his face, but he couldn't spare a moment to wipe it away.
He shouted loudly, "Everyone, move towards the corner! That might be a dead end!"
Upon hearing this, the crowd hurriedly shifted towards the corner.
Xiao Douzi, terrified, turned pale and clung tightly to Zhang Qi's leg, his body trembling uncontrollably.
His eyes were filled with fear as he muttered, "I don't want to die, I don't want to die..."
Zhang Qi could sense Xiao Douzi's terror. He freed one hand to pat Xiao Douzi's head and comforted him, "Don't be afraid. I'm here."
During the fierce defense, an arrow grazed Zhang Qi's arm, causing blood to flow freely.
But he gritted his teeth and endured the pain, with only one thought in his mind: he had to protect everyone and find a way to save the monkey.
He roared, "These Dark Arrow traps won't stop us!"
A Ling saw that Zhang Qi was injured and shouted, "Zhang Qi, hang in there! I'll find a way to disable the traps!"
As she spoke, she took some powder from her bag and scattered it over the trap's triggering mechanism, hoping to disrupt its operation.
The powder emitted a strange fragrance as it wafted through the air with A Ling's movements.
Professor Li and Xiao Wang crouched behind Lao Hu, using a flashlight to scan their surroundings, trying to find a flaw in the mechanism.
A glimmer of excitement shone in Professor Li's eyes. Despite the danger they were in, he remained curious about the intricate mechanisms of the ancient tomb. He murmured to himself, "This Dark Arrow mechanism is designed so ingeniously; there must be a core trigger point. If we can find it, perhaps we can completely disable it."
He absentmindedly pushed up his glasses, his gaze meticulously searching the walls. Xiao Wang, on the other hand, nervously gripped a stone, ready to defend everyone against any threats. His hands trembled slightly; after all, this was his first time experiencing such a heart-pounding situation.
He swallowed hard and said to Professor Li, "Professor, this is too dangerous. Can we really do this?"
Professor Li patted his shoulder and encouraged him, "Don't panic; we'll figure it out together."
At that moment, Lao Hu noticed a slightly protruding stone on the wall. A thought struck him, and he called out, "A Ling, look at that stone! Could it be the key to the mechanism?"
A Ling followed Lao Hu's gaze and her eyes lit up as she replied, "It's possible! Let me try to control it with my magic."
She focused intently, reciting an ancient incantation while her hands moved through intricate gestures.
However, just as she was about to successfully control the stone, a sharp arrow suddenly shot toward her. Lao Hu reacted quickly and shot down the arrow with his hunting rifle, but this distraction caused A Ling to lose her focus. The attempt to decipher the mechanism was temporarily stalled as Dark Arrows continued to rain down, bringing danger ever closer.
Meanwhile, Zhang Qi watched the relentless arrows with growing anxiety.
He placed the monkey in a relatively safe corner and said to everyone, "This isn't going to work. I'll draw these Dark Arrows away; you all take the chance to find a way to disable the mechanism."
Lao Hu frowned and tried to stop him. "Zhang Qi, it's too dangerous!"
But Zhang Qi was resolute. He took a deep breath and charged forward with his long knife drawn. He dodged left and right in the tomb corridor, deliberately attracting the arrows' attack direction.
The arrows pursued him like shadows, his figure appearing particularly agile yet fraught with danger amidst the rain of projectiles.
A Ling seized the opportunity to concentrate once more on deciphering the mechanism.
She pulled a red thread from her bag, one end tied to a small bell.
With precision, she threw the red thread towards the protruding stone, and it wrapped around it perfectly. A Ling gently shook the thread, causing the bell to emit a clear chime. As the sound rang out, her incantation quickened.
Suddenly, the firing frequency of the Dark Arrows began to decrease, and a glimmer of hope appeared in everyone's eyes.
Professor Li also noticed something unusual. He turned to Xiao Wang and said, "Look, the arrangement of those arrow holes seems to follow a certain pattern, as if distributed according to the positions of the stars. If we can destroy these arrow holes in the correct order, we might be able to completely stop the mechanism."
Encouraged by this insight, Xiao Wang mustered his courage and replied, "Professor, I'll give it a try."
He picked up a larger stone and, with Lao Hu providing cover, hurled it towards an arrow hole.
The first stone struck its target, and indeed, some arrows ceased their assault.
Zhang Qi dodged the Dark Arrows in the tomb passage, his strength gradually waning, yet he gritted his teeth and persevered. He knew that every second he held on increased everyone’s chances of breaking the mechanism.
With A Ling's sorcery and Professor Li's efforts combined, the Dark Arrow mechanism was finally unraveled. The last arrow fell feebly to the ground, restoring a temporary calm in the tomb passage.
Leaning against the wall, Zhang Qi gasped for breath. His clothes were soaked with sweat, and his arm throbbed with pain from an injury, but a look of relief spread across his face.
