Chen Li reached out to stroke the hedgehog's fluffy little head, smiling as he said, "You're quite clever."
The hedgehog comfortably squinted its eyes, rubbing its little head against Chen Li's palm, looking thoroughly content.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
In just that moment, brilliant waves of spiritual energy erupted in the void. The Black-scaled Tiger charged wildly, its body seeming to grow larger, a violent aura sweeping through the area and making it hard for people to breathe.
However, the Three Major Forces had numerous Cultivators, and each faction had a powerful Spirit Wheel Realm expert accompanying them. Although many lower-level Cultivators were intimidated by the Black-scaled Tiger's presence and appeared somewhat flustered, there were no casualties overall.
They coordinated seamlessly, their techniques fierce, unleashing waves of spiritual energy that rained down upon the Black-scaled Tiger. Despite its ferocity, the Black-scaled Tiger gradually showed signs of fatigue under the relentless assault from the many Cultivators.
Soon enough, the Black-scaled Tiger was knocked to the ground, battered and bruised. It let out a reluctant roar, sensing something was amiss; fear flickered in its crimson eyes. As a guardian beast with intelligence, it had lashed out in anger but would not persist if its life was in jeopardy.
Just as it prepared to flee, a dark figure flashed by like a ghost. In an instant, a black dagger pierced into its eye. The Black-scaled Tiger emitted a chilling roar, but before it could retaliate, a heavy punch struck its heart.
After struggling a few times, the Black-scaled Tiger finally breathed its last.
The dark figure was none other than Chen Ming, the young master of the Holy Spirit Palace and the deputy leader of the team.
"Chen Ming! Our deputy leader is amazing!" one disciple from the Holy Spirit Palace exclaimed loudly.
Other disciples from various sects echoed in agreement, their faces filled with admiration and respect.
Chen Ming sheathed his dagger and wiped off the blood with his clothing before nodding slightly to everyone, a hint of pride on his face.
Holding the hedgehog, Chen Li caught sight of Chen Ming and his pupils constricted slightly. No wonder they had been hiding and watching!
Unexpectedly, they encountered them again.
Chen Ming seemed to have noticed Chen Li and the others as well; he lifted his eyelids and smiled at Chen Li. However, there was a hint of coldness in his gaze.
"Chen Li, I didn't expect you to still be alive," Chen Ming said with a tone laced with sarcasm. "I thought you had been eaten by the Black-scaled Tiger."
A flicker of disgust crossed Chen Li's mind, but he maintained his composure on the outside. He replied with a hint of mockery, "No need for your concern; I intend to live."
Chen Ming curled his lips into a cold smile, his eyes filled with meaning as he leisurely remarked, "Of course. People like you are tough to kill! While others face danger, you sit back and wait for the spoils."
Listening to his sarcastic words, Chen Li felt a twinge of displeasure, and his brows slightly furrowed. Just as he was contemplating a retort, Shen Qingyue beside him could no longer hold her tongue.
Known for her straightforwardness and extreme dislike for Chen Ming, she stepped in to support her brother: "Chen Ming, what do you mean by that? Are you trying to provoke us or what?"
Chen Ming scoffed and looked at Shen Qingyue with indifference. "I'm merely speaking the truth. Don’t think I don’t know that your previous route wasn’t in this direction. How did you end up here? Are you trying to lead people into the tiger's den while you take all the Spiritual Herbs for yourselves?"
Shen Qingyue's gaze turned icy as she replied sharply, "Stop slandering us! Who doesn’t know how rare Spiritual Herbs are? My brother and I know our limits. But you—knowing full well that the Black-scaled Tiger is around here—are deliberately hiding your presence. What are your intentions?"
Chen Ming shrugged nonchalantly, his expression indifferent. "There will always be foolish people who seek their own demise." He emphasized the word "foolish," implying that it was their own fault for seeking death. "I can't let the seniors from the Three Major Forces risk their lives for you."
Chen Li shot him a cold glance; he understood that it was not wise to argue with Chen Ming for too long at this moment. He turned to Shen Qingyue and said softly, "There's no need to debate with him; we have our own path to follow."
Shen Qingyue nodded, her expression still reluctant but understanding the reasoning behind Chen Li's words. She gathered her thoughts and accompanied Chen Li aside, no longer engaging in conversation with Chen Ming.
At that moment, whispers began circulating among the other Cultivators nearby.
"Do you think there's any truth to what Chen Ming said?"
"Spiritual Herbs are precious, but would Chen Ming really provoke them? Why aren't those siblings explaining themselves?"
"Who knows? Maybe they really do have ulterior motives and want to keep the Spiritual Herbs for themselves!"
Chen Li felt a jolt; although he had sharp hearing, he still caught wind of the discussions among the many Cultivators behind Chen Ming.
Clearly, they had no intention of letting this go.
Holding the hedgehog, Chen Li couldn't help but glance around, a hint of worry creeping into his mind. The group of cultivators behind him wore expressions of anger, but in such a complicated situation, who knew how much they might be influenced by Chen Ming and the others?
Chen Li wanted to explain something, but before he could get the words out, the leader, Yue Shan, stepped forward. His face was set in a cold expression as he fixed his gaze on Chen Ming, his voice icy as he spoke: "Chen Ming, you Xiao Xiao Ji, how did your thoughts become so twisted?"
His words struck like a blade, piercing directly into Chen Ming's heart, and the atmosphere instantly tensed.
Chen Ming's eyes turned cold; he smirked slightly, a hint of disdain in his tone. "Senior, what do you mean by that? I merely spoke the truth!"
Truth? Yue Shan scoffed. "Even if your words are wrapped in gold, what you spit out is filthy. Chen Ming, I advise you to stop playing your little tricks; otherwise, how can you uphold the reputation of your Wuding Marquisate?"
Others chimed in agreement.
"Exactly! Xiao Xiao Ji, you're utterly deceitful!"
"What are you even worth to slander Chen Li? Who gave you the audacity? No manners at all!"
Seeing this, Chen Li was initially taken aback but soon felt a wave of relief wash over him. It seemed he had overthought things!
The crowd's words were like a refreshing breeze, instantly sweeping away the discomfort brought by Chen Ming. Meanwhile, Shen Qingyue standing nearby couldn't help but smile provocatively at Chen Ming.
Chen Ming's face darkened to an extreme; his hands clenched into fists that cracked ominously as he gripped them tightly.
