In the past, he would have confidently declared that Yelai would never be able to find them. Even if they could locate a safe house, with the Eyeballs in play, Yelai would still be unable to track them down.
This was because the Eyeballs he referred to were Secret Artifacts.
Secret Artifacts.
They were mysterious items imbued with Sequence Power. Their shapes varied widely; some resembled ancient objects, while others took on the forms of bizarre organs—strange and unique.
Yet, regardless of their appearance, they shared one common trait: they possessed Sequence Power and could be wielded by ordinary people without any cost.
In fact, the primary reason humanity was not wiped out after the Entities emerged was their discovery of Secret Artifacts. In the Year of the Sequence, during its first year, as Entities began to appear one after another, even those who became Sequence users were only at Rank I. Against higher-ranked Entities or even more powerful ones, survival was nearly impossible.
Sequence users needed time to grow into higher-ranked Sequences. What allowed humanity to survive during this period was precisely the discovery of Secret Artifacts.
With these artifacts, especially some of the more powerful ones, ordinary people could stand against formidable Entities, carving out Safe Zones and reclaiming patches of sanctuary for humanity.
Unfortunately, Secret Artifacts were rare; acquiring even one was akin to striking gold—an incredible stroke of luck.
As a result, most Secret Artifacts today are either controlled by top-ranking Safe Zones or owned by powerful high-rank Sequences.
Zhong Zhi was exceptionally fortunate. During a mission in a Numbered Protection Zone, he stumbled upon the Secret Artifact known as Eyeballs by sheer coincidence.
The Eyeballs possessed an incredible Sequence Power that granted invisibility. As long as one held it in their mouth, even high-rank Entities at Rank VIII would be unable to see or hear them using it.
As long as it touches a person or object, it can render them invisible as well. This is also why, after discovering the Gaze in Hu Family Village, Zhong Zhi's Squad was able to survive. When they first encountered the Gaze, Zhong Zhi used the Eyeballs to escape its pursuit.
Thus, even after committing murder in the Numbered Protection Zone, Zhong Zhi was merely exiled there. The reason he was not sentenced to death was not only because he had connections in the Numbered Protection Zone but primarily due to the Eyeballs. Those people coveted the Eyeballs, this Secret Artifact. To obtain the Eyeballs, they refrained from executing Zhong Zhi and instead exiled him to the Numbered Protection Zone, promising him an impossible task, hoping that one day he would surrender the Secret Artifact to return to the Numbered Protection Zone.
At that moment, Zhong Zhi was trying to comfort himself, murmuring in his heart. What am I afraid of? The Eyeballs can't even be detected by an Entity of Rank Eight. Yelai may control the Gaze, which is powerful, but the Gaze is Rank—what do they have to find me?
In his self-reassurance, Zhong Zhi silently mocked himself while holding the Eyeballs in his mouth. He realized he had been in the Numbered Protection Zone for too long; he was becoming increasingly paranoid and nearly scared out of his wits by Yelai. No, I'm not afraid! Damn it!
Just as he was comforting himself and his fear began to ease, suddenly, there was a commotion from behind. Zhong Zhi and his two companions sensed it and turned their heads back, their faces turning pale with fright.
Behind them stood Yelai, grinning with a chilling smile. Under the influence of Sequence Feature, his laughter sounded inhuman—eerily twisted, like a perverse demon. He laughed and said.
I found you.
